I was thinking of this song as I watched the Pushback Tug push Oman Air to taxi. "Oh won't you come with me, and take my hand".

My earliest shot of one of the then brand new Lufthansa A300 Airbuses. Once the Airbus fleet was delivered, they made Lufthansa DC10 and 747 visits to Heathrow much less frequent.

D-AIAB c/n 022 - an A300B2-1C - the 22nd production Airbus A300 flew with Lufthansa from 1976 until 1982. The aircraft was sadly written off in 1986 when operated by Indian Airlines as VT-ELV.

Pushbacks at busy airports are usually subjected to ground control clearance to facilitate optimal ground movement capacity on taxiways. Once clearance is obtained, the pilot will communicate with the pushback tractor driver (or a ground handler walking alongside the aircraft as in this case) to start the pushback. To communicate, a headset may be connected near the nose gear.

As the pilots cannot see what is behind the aircraft, steering is done by the tug driver and not by the pilots. Depending on the aircraft type and airline procedure, a bypass or ground locking pin may be temporarily installed into the nose gear to disconnect it from the aircraft's normal steering mechanism. However, this is now no longer always the case.

Occasionally, a pushback may need to be followed by an engines-running pull forward to a position where local procedures allow aircraft to move forward under their own power

Once the pushback is completed, the towbar is disconnected, and – if applicable – the bypass pin is removed. The ground handler will show the pin to the pilots to make it clear that it has been removed. The pushback is then complete, and the aircraft can taxi forward under its own power.

Here you see a towbarless tug or TBL tug. They scoop up the nose wheel and lift it off the ground, allowing the tug to manoeuvre the aircraft with more precision. It allows for better control of the aircraft and higher speeds. The main advantage of a towbarless tug is simplicity. By eliminating the towbar, operators are alleviated from maintaining many towbars. Also, the physical action and coordination required by the tug operator to move an aircraft with a TBL tug is simpler and easier to learn than with a towbar. By connecting the tug directly to the aircraft's landing gear – instead of through a towbar – tug operators have better control and responsiveness when maneuvering.

Technical stuff

What can I say?! It’s a single handheld shot, while I was flat on my belly on the apron. Sure, it must have been a first for the pilots too!

Post production consisted of cropping it a little, including levelling the horizon. The color toning was done in PS CC with a plugin Color Efex Pro 4 from the Nik Collection. Get it while you can, as Google recently published it for free!

The view from Car Park 2

Another murky day at my favourite airport! My earliest shot of a KLM Boeing 747 on the regular Terminal 2 'heavy' Stand G-12, with a clear view of the approach to the cargo tunnel. I loved the KLM livery on the 747s, but there was always a reminder of that awful Tenerife crash in 1977 when seeing them.

The KLM 747s were not uncommon visitors at Heathrow, mainly coming in on the morning (KL119) and evening (KL135) DC-8 flights from Amsterdam. They made a welcome change from the regular DC-9s that were used on most flights at the time.

KLM's long-haul back-bone, the Boeing 777 has been part of the company since October 2003 and even today, the company is still taking delivery of brand new Boeing 777-300ER's alongside a growing fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliners which are earmarked to replace both Airbus A330's and Boeing 747-400M's.

The fleet of 15 Boeing 777-200ER's will be staying for the forseeable future, KLM is in the process of refurbishing the entire Boeing 777 fleet given the plethora of work they routinely undertake. Whilst KLM is also in the midst of repainting their Boeing 777-300ER fleet, the Boeing 777-200ER's have been left untouched by the painters!

Given the range the Boeing 777's have, they undertake a huge manner of work alongside their Boeing 747 fleet... As that fleet dwindles down, it will be largely the Boeing 777 left to pick-up the pieces.

It is mainly the Boeing 777-200ER fleet that features the highest concentration of KLM Asia branding for use on flights to Taipei. The liveries of their Boeing 777-200ER are as follows:

-KLM: PH-BQA/B/C/D/E/G/O/P

-KLM Asia: PH-BQF/H/I/K/L/M/N

Currently, KLM have 26 Boeing 777's in service, which include 15 Boeing 777-200ER's and 11 Boeing 777-300ER's (with 3 more orders).

Bravo Quebec Oscar is one of 15 Boeing 777-200ER's in KLM's fleet and one of 8 to carry standard and now the old KLM colours. Delivered new to the Dutch flag-carrier in January 2007 currently on lease from AerCap, and she is powered by 2 General Electric GE90-94B engines. Like all of KLM's Boeing 777-200ER's (bar one!), they are named after UNESCO world heritage sites. PH-BQO is named after the wooden city centre of the town, Rauma in Finland, the oldest buildings dating from the 18th Century. Old Rauma is a listed UNESCO world heritage site.
