a herd of Guanaco's has detected a female Puma among the low vegetation on a hill. Instead of running they are intensely watching the cat

Guanaco's are the main prey species of Pumas in Torres del Paine National Park, Patagonia, Chile

With sentinels placed on hill tops Guanaco herds have a very efficient defense system during the daytime.

We have observed several times that with their excellent eyesight these sentinels are able to detect movement several hundred meters away. Often it are Puma cubs that break cover for an instant which makes daytime hunting very difficult for puma mothers.

The sound of the Guanaco alarm calls carries quite far.

With a shoulder height of up to 90 cm and a weight of 100 kg, the Puma is one of the largest predatory cats in the world. Nevertheless, he is not scientifically one of the big cats, but one of the small cats. His next relative is the Jaguarundi, also called weasel cat.

Unlike big cats such as lion, tiger, leopard and jaguar, the puma cannot roar. Instead, he often produces scream-like sounds.

The cougar (Puma concolor), also called puma, mountain lion, catamount, onça-parda and panther, is a large feline native to the Americas. It inhabits North, Central and South America, making it the most widely distributed wild, terrestrial mammal in the Western Hemisphere, and one of the most widespread in the world. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cougar

Five year old female puma (puma concolor), "Escarcha" (aka Frost), named for her distinctive silver grey color. She is a very confident puma that is normally calm when being observed. However as the mother of two very young kittens, she mostly kept a fair distance away from us. Her passing this close to us was a real treat.

Escarcha (Spanish for "Frost") is a well known young female puma (puma concolor) living in the Chilean Patagonia. Named for her light grey coat, she is the daughter of the famous puma Peteka. She is a nursing mother of two very young kittens.

Pantanal, Mato Grosso, Brasil

The morning of July 4th, 2022 while searching for wildlife photo opportunities in our safari boat, we venture into the Piquiri River, a tributary of the Cuiaba River. In a few minutes, we came across an unidentify figure crossing the river. Alyson was the first one to observe the silhouette. We were far away, at least 150 mts, but Alyson knew that there was something unusual about this specimen. He instructed our Captain Marcelo Arruda, to accelerate and approach the animal. When we were getting close, Alyson thought that the animal was a jaguar. The light was harsh and very difficult to see clear. A few seconds later he screamed PUMA!!! It is a PUMA!!! I have to contain my emotions, because I have never seen a puma, let alone, swimming at very close distance. I was trying to decide what was more important, capture the puma with my camera and see everything through the lens, or forget about taking pictures and just enjoy this sublime moment. At the end, I ended up doing both.

The encounter was ephemeral but unforgettable. When the powerful swimmer reached the other side of the river, quickly jump over 6 feet from the river to the dense vegetation and disappeared.

Pumas are quite rare in the Pantanal and it’s very unusual to see one in the daytime. Marcelo was very excited and told us that in twelve years of labor as a captain, leading wildlife safari’s, this encounter with a puma was only his second one.

In the Pantanal, generrally speaking, jaguars are more commonly seen in grasslands adjacent to the Cuiaba, Tres Hermanos and Corixo Negro rivers. By contrast, The Piquiri River is enclosed by a dense forest and minimum grassland area. I could speculate that the absence of grasslands will lead to low numbers of capibaras and consequently less jaguars. Less jaguars will represent less competition for the pumas. That may explain the presense of the puma in this area. However, in 2016 Grasiela Porfirio et al conducted a camera trapping study to investigate the daily activity rhythms of jaguars, pumas and their prey. The two sites chosen were the Amolar Mountain Ridge: Santa Tereza Ranch and Engenheiro Eliezer Batista Protected Area. These two locations constitute the greatest extent of contiguous protected areas (2650 km2) in the Brazilian Pantanal. They find out that jaguars and pumas overlap extensively in their activity patterns, and follow the same potential prey.

Patagonia has always held a special place in my heart. The vast landscapes, imposing mountains, serene lakes, and diverse wildlife leave me breathless. It was in this magical region that I experienced one of the most thrilling moments of my life: a face-to-face encounter with a puma.

On the second day of the W Circuit trek, I was hiking solo from Central Mountain Hostel towards Francés Mountain Hostel (a roughly 17 km/10.5-mile, 6-hour trek) when I spotted a figure in the bushes. My heart raced – could it be a Lesser Rhea ( flic.kr/p/2mw23tV ), the ostrich-like bird I'd been hoping to see?

Cautiously, I started taking pictures. To my surprise and delight, the creature emerged from hiding. But it wasn't a Rhea – it was a puma!

I never imagined seeing a puma so close. Its beauty and imposing presence left me speechless for a moment. I watched it, mesmerized by its reddish-gray coat and piercing eyes.

Torres del Paine National Park is estimated to have a puma population between 50 and 100. These magnificent animals are the second-largest cats in the Americas, after jaguars, though considered "small" globally. While Patagonian pumas are Chile's largest feline, males typically weigh between 150 and 220 pounds (68-100 kg), while females weigh over 100 pounds (49 kg). Their length can range from 5 to 9 feet (1.5-2.7 meters) from head to tail. (For reference, I'm 5'8" tall and weigh 140 pounds – 1.73 meters and 63.5 kg).

Fear quickly replaced my awe. I was alone in a wild environment, facing a top predator. What should I do?

Safety leaflets from the park entrance came to mind – make eye contact, stand tall, and don't run. Generally, staying calm is key around wild animals, as they're unlikely to attack unless threatened. Additionally, in a park with abundant food sources like guanacos, rheas, huemuls, Patagonian gray foxes, and culpeo foxes, the pumas likely wouldn't see me as prey.

Carefully, I put my camera away and gripped my trekking poles tightly. If the puma attacked, I'd defend myself with everything I had.

A Happy Ending and Unforgettable Lesson:

Thankfully, the puma showed no interest in me. With the same calmness it displayed upon arrival, it retreated back into the forest.

Trembling with a mix of emotions, I stood there for a few minutes. Adrenaline still coursed through my veins, but overwhelming joy and gratitude filled me. I had just witnessed a spectacular display of nature's power.

This encounter profoundly impacted me. It instilled a deep respect for wildlife and their habitat. It also revealed the awe-inspiring power of nature and the importance of connecting with it.

If you have Netflix, check out a documentary called "Our Great National Parks," narrated by Barack Obama. Season 1, episode 2 focuses on Chilean Patagonia. This breathtaking region boasts 24 unique national parks and is quickly becoming one of the most protected areas on Earth.

The series showcases the stunning beauty of the natural world, from the beaches of Africa and the islands of Japan to Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

Bonus fact: The episode featuring Chilean Patagonia even won Barack Obama an Emmy Award for Outstanding Narrator!

It's been a decade since I visited Patagonia, and it remains one of my favorite trips. The region was relatively untapped in terms of wildlife photography back then. Wild puma/mountain lion photos were fairly hard to come by. A lot has changed in the past 10 years. Several guides offer tours to the region to see the pumas and other wildlife. While I'm sure it's still a wonderful experience, I'm grateful to have been there during the infancy of puma tourism. It had a wild, unexplored feel to it that I will never forget.
