This is the first public library in the New World, founded in 1646 by Juan de Palafox, the bishop of Puebla, when he donated his extensive book collection insisting that it is to be made public. This great Renaissance man, however, was demoted from his position due to the internal intrigues and politics within the Roman Catholic church and lived out his years in an uninfluential bishop post in rural Spain.

The barrio (or rather a street) of artists is a really cool idea to make a street lined with studios of painters and sculptors. You can see them at work and purchase their works right there. I don't think I have seen anything quite like this anywhere.

Se construy’o en los arrabales del tlaxilacalli llamado Tepetlapa,perteneciente al barrio indigena de Analco.Los naturales en el propio siglo XVI edificaron una capilla que en principio iba a estar dedicada a Santiago el Mayoy,sin embargo,al colocar en un altar la imagen de la Virgen de los Remedios que una india panadera les prestó,decidieron que fuera la patrona del rudimentario templo.
El edificio actual data del siglo XVIII, con una portada profusamentedecorada en argamasa,propia del barroco popular,presentando las esculturas de la propia Virgen,
San Miguel,los evangelistas Lucas y Marcos,axial como San José,San Juan Bautista,San Pedro y San Pablo.
El edificio por su ubicaión cercana a los Fuertes de Loreto y Guadalupe,fue sede del Cuartel desde donde el General Ignacio Zaragoza (1829-1862),dirigió la gloriosa batalla del 5 de Mayo de 1862.

The building for its Laundry Service near the forts of Loreto and Guadalupe, hosted the headquarters from which General Ignacio Zaragoza (1829-1862), led the glorious battle of May 5, 1862.
