Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoneceus), Southeast corner of Thomson Marsh, Kelowna, BC.

Every spring, I try to find which of the RWBLs of The Marsh is willing to be a star. As they're spaced every 60-90 metres along the edge of the water, there are plenty to choose from, but less than half a dozen will be brazen enough to allow this kind of proximity.

This one inhabits the southeast corner of Thomson Marsh — a prime location that always has a dominant bird. The cattails, however, are 30–50 metres back from the trail and the terrain is often soggy. I decided to see if this fella would let me get close at least while the ground is still firm.

He stayed very calm as I approached. Because he seemed rather stout compared to many other lads I've looked at, I chose to call him Pudge, named after the great MLB catcher, Ivan Rodriguez....

Why three images? Because of the varied backgrounds.... Of the three, I like this one best....

I just love seeing their expanding bellies as they pack it on for migration!

Everyone's favorite Hero in a Hardshell, the amazing Pudge.

Thanks everyone - made Explore.

Thank you to everyone who sent well wishes to Pudge. He really loved the attention ^__^

At the risk of putting some viewers off, I'm ending March with several long series. They're for my own record, really; I'm using my Flickr Pro plan to protect/back up my images.

At the same time, I like to show a particular bird in a variety of poses with different expressions and bokehs. It's interesting to me how different our impression of a subject can be depending upon the context in which we portray it.

We bought Pudge and Lucy a new cat perch.

I think they like it, they look pretty comfy.

There were two boxes of lights yet to go on the tree... and they were just sitting on the table.

Naturally, I had to use them. :)

Rio was suspicious of what we were going to do when I put the bow on her collar.

Kirby was jolly and patient when he saw the camera.

Pudge was pretty compliant. He sat still with his happy little face on and only wiggled his way forward once (which happened to be this shot).

Junuea was NOT happy with me... I woke him up from his daily afternoon nap. :-S Thankfully his mood changed when the treats appeared. (he actually "escaped" right as I was getting ready to pose the dogs and L found him halfway hidden under a bed!)

Tilly didn't know what was going on. We had to keep having her sit because she would sink into a down position. Apparently it was really boring to her too because she's yawning in about half the pictures.

I love our dogs!

Alright. So confession. When someone first told me:

"If you loved the Perks of Being a Wallflower, you should read Looking For Alaska!"

This is what I thought "Pffftuhh. No book can be compared to the Perks. I'm not even going to try."

BUT OH MY GOD. I finally bought it.

Started reading it.

Five hours later, without moving positions on my bed, I finished it.

That book is so amazing.

I cannot get over it still.

I'm reading it again.

And I just read it cover to cover yesterday.

NERDFIGHTER ;D

Oh and instead of "In all this chaos we found safety" tattooed under my boob.

I want that quote ^^^^^^^^^^^^ :D

"Thomas Edison's last words were: "It's very beautiful over there." I don't know where there is, but I believe it's somewhere, and I hope it's beautiful."

He sleeps way too much anyway.

This is Olive :) She's caged in love. Is that such a bad thing?

She was supposed to be Gina the crow but I couldn't find a

stuffed crow so you're stuck with Olive :)

Photographed in the Thames Estuary near Southend Pier.

Pudge was built in 1922, amongst the last of the sailing barges to be constructed from wood. Steel had already taken over as the preferred material for barge hulls.

An auxilary engine was fitted in 1932 and Pudge was re-engined in the late 1990's, after an extensive refit I believe. Pudge was in commercial use until 1968, the last cargo being fresh pineapple.

A major claim to fame to be proud of is being one of the Dunkirk Little Ships. Pudge also took part in the Queen's Jubilee Pageant of 2012.

it's Pudge, literally an "old lady" (pushin' 20+ yrs)... and just for fun → youtu.be/0YlNLBDxrTE?list=PLD74B13A33103BC5B ;-)
