This is a precious little boy with his favorite toy, a bicycle. Peruvian families appreciate what they have. The boy was quite intrigued with my camera, and I am proud of this photo. Following an appointment with the Long Covid Clinic I can officially report that, yes, I have Long Covid. There is no definitive test yet but my symptoms are indicative of Long Covid and in addition I am told that my symptoms also indicate Covid induced dysautonomia. That means damage to my autonomic nervous system responsible for controlling blood pressure and heart rate, etc.
Just one mild acute infection that I caught from my ex-partner in 2023 has caused life-limiting disease.
There are now plenty of studies that show that even asymptomatic acute Covid infections result in permanent damage to the brain, cardiovascular system and immunity. Everyone that has had Covid is harmed even if they think they are fully recovered.
I'm pleased to see that the woman in this shot is wearing an FFP2 respirator mask. Sadly the man is just wearing a surgical mask that does nothing to prevent or protect from the spread of airborne infection such as Covid or the flu. Public health education has failed us.
Nothing can be done for my Long Covid by the way. There is no cure. There are no treatments (although HIV retroviral drugs are showing promise in a few trials around the world). My 'treatment plan' will involve advice on how to plan, prepare and pace myself to manage my symptoms. Things that I am already forced into doing just to manage day-to-day living.
Protect yourselves my Flickr friends. It's not too late. The damage from each infection is cumulative. Your health is precious.
Take care my friends.

When someone decides that whether to wear a mask or not during a deadly pandemic is an indicator of political leanings, or enlightenment rather than a concern or disregard for the lives of fellow human beings, we have failed. A mask is not a matter of politics, and it never has been. It is a matter of public health. Those who fail to use the means available to prevent the spread of Covid-19 are just as culpable in the deaths of others as those who drink and drive and those who do drive by shootings. Just because you don't know if you infected others and caused deaths by your arrogance does not give you absolution before God or society. You deserve to be a pariah.
When you hear “Code Blue - Full Isolation” overhead multiple times a day, as you toil in full protective gear to perform tracheostomies and PEG placements on patients with the knowledge they will likely never be aware again....you have nothing to say. Until you see your countrymen selfishly decide to travel for Thanksgiving, Christmas and the New Year, gathering in groups and two weeks later wondering why their parents are in the ICU, or can't get in the ICU,... say nothing. Until you realize that we are just now approaching the inevitable deadly result of Christmas travel, and we still have the result of New Years celebrations to go, say nothing.
This is not a matter of politics. It is not a matter of personal freedom. It is a matter of selfishness, arrogance and narcissism. It is a matter of whether you give a damn about the lives of your fellow human beings. Until you realize that, there is nothing further to be said.

Air pollution is contamination of the indoor or outdoor environment by any chemical, physical or biological agent that modifies the natural characteristics of the atmosphere.
Household combustion devices, motor vehicles, industrial facilities and forest fires are common sources of air pollution. Pollutants of major public health concern include particulate matter, carbon monoxide, ozone, nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide. Outdoor and indoor air pollution cause respiratory and other diseases and are important sources of morbidity and mortality.
Air quality is closely linked to the earth’s climate and ecosystems globally. Policies to reduce air pollution, therefore, offer a win-win strategy for both climate and health, lowering the burden of disease attributable to air pollution, as well as contributing to the near- and long-term mitigation of climate change.

LA Mayor Eric Garcetti recently converted the COVID-19 Testing Site to a Vaccine Super Site at Dodger's Stadium. Los Angeles behind other cities, as the city is in Phase I Tier 1 helping only frontline healthcare workers and turning away anyone who isn't. Other cities have begun Phase I Tier 2, vaccinating seniors 65+ and frontline healthcare workers. The Super Site in Los Angeles is known to be the largest COVID-19 vaccine site in the United States. The location was a coronavirus testing site weeks prior, until the FDA issued a warning to the city stating that their testing kits were faulty.
Thousands sit in hours of traffic for their scheduled COVID-19 vaccine appointments on Joe Biden's Inauguration Day, two weeks after the Capitol Riots on January 6. Coronavirus cases reach an all-time high, with the United States surpassing 3 million cases and 400,000 deaths. Scientists detected the new and more deadly coronavirus variant lingering in Southern California, which was discovered in the U.K. weeks prior. Johnson & Johnson is finalizing on their COVID-19 vaccine, which differs from Moderna and Pfizer because it only requires one dose.
As Joe Biden took the oath of office in the morning, he hopes to get 100,000 Americans vaccinated by the first 100 days of office and reopen America.
There are many ways to wear a mask - including some I'm sure the public health communicators didn't think of when they prepared their messages...

Outreach in the community and educating the public on health concerns is a highly important part of public health.
Boxes support extension of the counter to keep customer distant from staff behind plexiglass barrier.
Wooden ramps lead up to the openings in the barrier. Transaction is done by putting purchases, money, credit card in plastic tray which is slid up to the staff. Prescription and change, or credit card are returned in the basket.
No one is allowed in the pharmacy unless masked.
One has to wonder how long we will be living like this. It is an inconvenience, but if it helps keep us all healthy, I appreciate the precautions.
Masks will remain a critical part of the fight against Covid-19, even after vaccinations are further along. This is what my wife and I use now -- a KN95 mask. We double mask with a surgical mask on top. Cloth masks alone are not as effective with the new variants of SARS-CoV-2 now circulating. My recommendation (I am a retired infectious diseases physician and epidemiologist and have been keeping up daily with the science) is use a KN95 or KF94 mask that is FDA approved. Double mask with a surgical mask or cloth mask atop that. Use all the other public health precautions (hand hygiene, physical distancing, avoid crowds, make sure indoor spaces are ventilated). And please, get vaccinated as soon as you can. We cal stop Covid-19 but it requires each of us doing her or his part. It is literally an all hands evolution.

John Grantham, Sheriff of Newcastle, surveying slum clearance areas during a visit by the Minister of Health, 16 October 1925 (TWAM ref. DF.GRA/1/4). The Minister, Neville Chamberlain MP, is not pictured in this image.
These images belong to a series of albums documenting John Grantham’s service to the City of Newcastle upon Tyne as its Sheriff 1924-1925 and its Lord Mayor 1936-1937. John Grantham was born in Blyth in 1877 and became a cinema proprietor in Newcastle. He was elected to the City Council in 1912 and became an alderman in 1932. The albums give us an interesting insight into the duties of Lord Mayor and Sheriff as well as a fascinating picture of the times.
2016 is the 800th anniversary of the creation of Newcastle's Mayoralty and Burgesses.

Public Health is not an enemy and should not be made political because the whole role of public health is to improve the health of the entire community. It’s time for us to listen to public health officials and stop the spread of COVID-19 by wearing masks, social distancing, increasing testing capabilities, isolating the individuals who test positive and complete contact tracing to quarantine the individuals who have been exposed to the virus.

'Patriotic Public Health Buttons by Su_G': 1960s campaign style buttons in patriotic red, white and blue, pinned on a white coat! (fabric mockup c/o Spoonflower)
Hand-drawn.

Relates to 'Public health saves lives by Su_G': my psychedelic entry in Spoonflower's Designs for Good Design Challenge.
My inspiration for these came from a fabulous book of 1960s photographs which included some from around the 1968 Nixon campaign - which I have then subverted for a cause dear to my public health heart. It has been so dispiriting to have to explain over and over again that asking individuals to do things that benefit the group (keep everyone healthy) benefits the individual as well as everyone else.

How to stay safe in the supermarket... Signage at the entry way, Aldi supermarket.
Text reads (in part): "Let's be kind, calm, and most of all patient. We are all in this together, let's respect each other."
Aldi were the first supermarket - in my experience - that erected screens around cashiers to protect them and us, the customers, from accidental infection.

Public health messages 2 of 3 Social distancing of cars in the car park (Goolwa, SA)
This seems peculiarly Australian to me. The expectation that cars would socially distance (who knew that cars had a social life?) and the cars willfully ignoring the injunction from on high...
Ok, I know there are different interpretations we could make, but I prefer it my way!
[Public health messages_2of3_Social distancing_IMG_8267]
Inspired by a WWII poster I saw that was so appropriate for today's war on the Coronavirus.
Strobist:
One AB800 to camera right raised to the ceiling and shot down on subject through white umbrella at 1/8 power. One Vivitar 285 HV fired at 1/2 power, bounced off near by wall on camera left. Both strobes triggered by Phottex Ares RF trigger.
Let's see YOUR mask.....
MAKING ONE is easy enough--some sewing experience helps but isn't necessary....here's the excellent, short, how-to, video:

My ears are busy these days. I'm also modeling my new Bose Hearphones, a wonderful alternative to the hearing aids, when I get tired of the latter. Or when circumstances are such that a little noise cancelling, plus enhancement of the sounds you WANT to hear is desired. These are a terrific backup to hearing aids! Write me if you would like to know more. I love mine.
Public health messages 3 of 3 Social distancing in the restaurant (Norwood, SA)
Again, this seems peculiarly Australian to me: the right things have been done, and no one doubts that the intention is there, but just not... quite.... carried off... (Note that no one was actually at risk as social distancing *was* being observed: just not on the button.)

Text: "Mick S. gave me an ear tag" - although you probably can't read that. It's either that or this cow's name is Mick S.
Silly comments about a useful way of starting the "paddock to plate", or "farm to fork" tracking/ traceability that is an important public health development consequent to outbreaks of 'Mad Cow' disease,

Billboard in Los Angeles reminding that there is a Syphilis Tsunami and free STD checks are available. Brings back memories of my time in Chicago as the Medical Director for the STD/HIV Branch of the Chicago Department of Public Health. The hopes to eradicate syphilis are longstanding but the pathogen, coupled with its manner of spread via sex, really conspires to keep the hopes dim. I will have to get back with my DSLR and a longer lens -- this is a classic (well, at least for some of us).
