Candid street photography from Glasgow, Scotland, captured in February 2025.

March, as well as being the start of meteorological spring, is also Long Covid Awareness Month.

Covid never disappeared, despite great amounts of 'hopium' out there, and is still today killing more people than flu and disabling many, many more than that. More than 400,000,000 people that are known, and know, that they have Long Covid and many millions more that are so far unaware but that know that they have never felt 'right' since 'that infection' they had.

In fact, in the UK at the moment, waste water surveillance of Covid shows that levels of infection are higher now than in 2021/2022. Sadly the Lateral Flow Tests are now very poor at detecting current strains. If you think it is a really nasty cold or the flu outside of flu season it is mostly likely Covid.

Long Covid will strike anyone, regardless of physical fitness or self-perceived immunity strength. It does not discriminate.

Over 470,000 peer reviewed studies, pre-prints and meta analyses point to the horrific damage that every single Covid infection, no matter how mild, does to our bodies. You may be lucky enough not to notice ongoing symptoms from your Covid infection but internal damage has been done. Each reinfection does cumulative damage. Long Covid is a likely outcome, eventually, as each reinfection is a roll of the dice.

From mayoclinic.org "People can get Long Covid symptoms after catching the Covid-19 virus even if they never had Covid-19 symptoms. Also, long COVID symptoms can show up weeks or months after a person seems to have recovered."

There are some 200+ signs and symptoms attributed to Long COVID.

Most common is debilitating fatigue. It's a kind of exhaustion that cannot be remedied by a nap or sleeping. Activity one day can lead to days of being unable to do much at all.

Many people report a fast heart rate, chest pain or palpitations.

Headaches are common.

'Brain Fog', which is actually brain damage caused by the virus, can be a range of cognitive issues such as difficulty concentrating or with short term memory. A feeling of not being quite as 'sharp' as you used to be.

Shortness of breath is commonly reported. It can be ongoing or intermittent.

Always ill or colds that are worse than ever? COVID damages the immune system in a similar way to HIV.

Some symptoms include: fatigue, headache, attention disorder, hair loss, dyspnoea, ageusia, anosmia, post-activity polypnea, joint pain, cough, sweating, nausea or vomiting, chest pain/discomfort, memory loss, hearing loss, tinnitus, anxiety, depression, digestive disorders such as persistent diarrhoea, weight loss, cutaneous signs (rashes etc), resting heart rate increase, palpitations, pain, intermittent fever, sleep disorder, reduced pulmonary capacity, sleep apnoea, chills, mental health issues, psychiatric illness, red eyes, pulmonary fibrosis, diabetes, limb oedema, dizziness, stroke, throat pain, sexual dysfunction, new hypertension, myocarditis, renal failure, PTSD and arrhythmia.

This list is NOT exhaustive!

Infection can be prevented. It is not inevitable. FFP2/3 respirators are effective at preventing all airborne viruses, ventilation of indoor spaces, HEPA filtration of the air and use of Far UVC devices have all been proven.

Awareness is needed because COVID and Long COVID were made political by neoliberal think tanks, politicians and billionaire media. Misinformation and disinformation were spread. There is still a lot of medical gaslighting despite the vast mountains of clinical evidence and science. Some people blame the vaccine but Long COVID was recorded before vaccines were available and is similar to ongoing health issues suffered by the few survivors of the first SARS virus.

If you think that you may have ongoing symptoms following an infection that could have been COVID then I urge you to seek help from your doctor. There is no treatment or cure but awareness matters. There are ways and means to reduce the impact of those symptoms to varying degrees of success. Don't suffer in silence.

If you read all of this then, thank you, that means a great deal to me.

I care about this because public health messaging has failed us all.

I care because I suffer from Long COVID myself.

COVID was never 'just like a cold or flu'. COVID was never 'mild'. COVID is not 'over'.

It is a devastating disease.

Be aware. Protect yourself. Protect others.

Street photography from Glasgow, Scotland. Captured in October 2024.

Following an appointment with the Long Covid Clinic I can officially report that, yes, I have Long Covid. There is no definitive test yet but my symptoms are indicative of Long Covid and in addition I am told that my symptoms also indicate Covid induced dysautonomia. That means damage to my autonomic nervous system responsible for controlling blood pressure and heart rate, etc.

Just one mild acute infection that I caught from my ex-partner in 2023 has caused life-limiting disease.

There are now plenty of studies that show that even asymptomatic acute Covid infections result in permanent damage to the brain, cardiovascular system and immunity. Everyone that has had Covid is harmed even if they think they are fully recovered.

I'm pleased to see that the woman in this shot is wearing an FFP2 respirator mask. Sadly the man is just wearing a surgical mask that does nothing to prevent or protect from the spread of airborne infection such as Covid or the flu. Public health education has failed us.

Nothing can be done for my Long Covid by the way. There is no cure. There are no treatments (although HIV retroviral drugs are showing promise in a few trials around the world). My 'treatment plan' will involve advice on how to plan, prepare and pace myself to manage my symptoms. Things that I am already forced into doing just to manage day-to-day living.

Protect yourselves my Flickr friends. It's not too late. The damage from each infection is cumulative. Your health is precious.

Take care my friends.

Beyond the vibrant colors of Havana’s historic architecture, a persistent ash cloud hangs over the city, a byproduct of an energy grid reliant on poorly refined bunker fuel oil. Supplied through subsidies from Venezuela to support Cuba's command economy, this high-sulfur fuel is processed by local power plants with aging infrastructure that is prone to failure.

The burning of cheap unrefined fuel, while offering striking sunsets, produces toxic emissions—including nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, and heavy particulate matter like soot—significantly degrade urban air quality, especially because power generation is often located near densely populated centres. For vulnerable groups, such as children and the elderly, this constant exposure is a primary driver of chronic respiratory illnesses, including aggravated asthma and decreased lung function. These toxic plumes transform a visual symbol of industrial struggle into a daily health crisis for residents living in their shadow.

When someone decides that whether to wear a mask or not during a deadly pandemic is an indicator of political leanings, or enlightenment rather than a concern or disregard for the lives of fellow human beings, we have failed. A mask is not a matter of politics, and it never has been. It is a matter of public health. Those who fail to use the means available to prevent the spread of Covid-19 are just as culpable in the deaths of others as those who drink and drive and those who do drive by shootings. Just because you don't know if you infected others and caused deaths by your arrogance does not give you absolution before God or society. You deserve to be a pariah.

When you hear “Code Blue - Full Isolation” overhead multiple times a day, as you toil in full protective gear to perform tracheostomies and PEG placements on patients with the knowledge they will likely never be aware again....you have nothing to say. Until you see your countrymen selfishly decide to travel for Thanksgiving, Christmas and the New Year, gathering in groups and two weeks later wondering why their parents are in the ICU, or can't get in the ICU,... say nothing. Until you realize that we are just now approaching the inevitable deadly result of Christmas travel, and we still have the result of New Years celebrations to go, say nothing.

This is not a matter of politics. It is not a matter of personal freedom. It is a matter of selfishness, arrogance and narcissism. It is a matter of whether you give a damn about the lives of your fellow human beings. Until you realize that, there is nothing further to be said.

Over the last five months, it has been an honor to help at the Jones County COVID-19 Vaccination Drive Through Clinic with other individuals from across the State of North Carolina, from local residents, health department staff, emergency personal, and retired volunteers to members of the National Guard. Jones County is a very rural area in eastern North Carolina and because their health department, at the start of the pandemic, only had six employees who covered the day to day operations, COVID-19 was a huge burden. They requested help from the state so I volunteered to be deployed to Jones County to help with the implementation of the vaccine administration. It was a fantastic experience and I thoroughly enjoyed working with such a wonderful group of individuals dedicated to the public health and safety of the residents of Jones County and the NC Community, as many individuals drove from other counties and bordering states to receive the free vaccine. Whether it was a cold day and we had to bundle up or a bright sunny day where I forgot sunscreen and got a sun burn or having to wear a rain jacket to keep dry from the rain, we were there to help keep NC citizens healthy and end the pandemic. I was also thankful to be able to receive the COVID-19 vaccine during that time. If you want to get the vaccine, you have a spot, so take your shot! Find NC vaccine locations here: myspot.nc.gov/

Uno sguardo sul quello che è diventato un microcosmo nei dintorni di casa mia. A look at what has become a microcosm around my home. Bologna Aprile 2020

Air pollution is contamination of the indoor or outdoor environment by any chemical, physical or biological agent that modifies the natural characteristics of the atmosphere.

Household combustion devices, motor vehicles, industrial facilities and forest fires are common sources of air pollution. Pollutants of major public health concern include particulate matter, carbon monoxide, ozone, nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide. Outdoor and indoor air pollution cause respiratory and other diseases and are important sources of morbidity and mortality.

Air quality is closely linked to the earth’s climate and ecosystems globally. Policies to reduce air pollution, therefore, offer a win-win strategy for both climate and health, lowering the burden of disease attributable to air pollution, as well as contributing to the near- and long-term mitigation of climate change.

LA Mayor Eric Garcetti recently converted the COVID-19 Testing Site to a Vaccine Super Site at Dodger's Stadium. Los Angeles behind other cities, as the city is in Phase I Tier 1 helping only frontline healthcare workers and turning away anyone who isn't. Other cities have begun Phase I Tier 2, vaccinating seniors 65+ and frontline healthcare workers. The Super Site in Los Angeles is known to be the largest COVID-19 vaccine site in the United States. The location was a coronavirus testing site weeks prior, until the FDA issued a warning to the city stating that their testing kits were faulty.

Thousands sit in hours of traffic for their scheduled COVID-19 vaccine appointments on Joe Biden's Inauguration Day, two weeks after the Capitol Riots on January 6. Coronavirus cases reach an all-time high, with the United States surpassing 3 million cases and 400,000 deaths. Scientists detected the new and more deadly coronavirus variant lingering in Southern California, which was discovered in the U.K. weeks prior. Johnson & Johnson is finalizing on their COVID-19 vaccine, which differs from Moderna and Pfizer because it only requires one dose.

As Joe Biden took the oath of office in the morning, he hopes to get 100,000 Americans vaccinated by the first 100 days of office and reopen America.

Wooden ramps lead up to the openings in the barrier. Transaction is done by putting purchases, money, credit card in plastic tray which is slid up to the staff. Prescription and change, or credit card are returned in the basket.

No one is allowed in the pharmacy unless masked.

One has to wonder how long we will be living like this. It is an inconvenience, but if it helps keep us all healthy, I appreciate the precautions.

Masks will remain a critical part of the fight against Covid-19, even after vaccinations are further along. This is what my wife and I use now -- a KN95 mask. We double mask with a surgical mask on top. Cloth masks alone are not as effective with the new variants of SARS-CoV-2 now circulating. My recommendation (I am a retired infectious diseases physician and epidemiologist and have been keeping up daily with the science) is use a KN95 or KF94 mask that is FDA approved. Double mask with a surgical mask or cloth mask atop that. Use all the other public health precautions (hand hygiene, physical distancing, avoid crowds, make sure indoor spaces are ventilated). And please, get vaccinated as soon as you can. We cal stop Covid-19 but it requires each of us doing her or his part. It is literally an all hands evolution.

These images belong to a series of albums documenting John Grantham’s service to the City of Newcastle upon Tyne as its Sheriff 1924-1925 and its Lord Mayor 1936-1937. John Grantham was born in Blyth in 1877 and became a cinema proprietor in Newcastle. He was elected to the City Council in 1912 and became an alderman in 1932. The albums give us an interesting insight into the duties of Lord Mayor and Sheriff as well as a fascinating picture of the times.

If you weren’t there to give a hand, there are still lots of hands outstretched now, let’s try to make it a better place for each other!

Public Health is not an enemy and should not be made political because the whole role of public health is to improve the health of the entire community. It’s time for us to listen to public health officials and stop the spread of COVID-19 by wearing masks, social distancing, increasing testing capabilities, isolating the individuals who test positive and complete contact tracing to quarantine the individuals who have been exposed to the virus.

'Patriotic Public Health Buttons by Su_G': 1960s campaign style buttons in patriotic red, white and blue, pinned on a white coat! (fabric mockup c/o Spoonflower)

Relates to 'Public health saves lives by Su_G': my psychedelic entry in Spoonflower's Designs for Good Design Challenge.

My inspiration for these came from a fabulous book of 1960s photographs which included some from around the 1968 Nixon campaign - which I have then subverted for a cause dear to my public health heart. It has been so dispiriting to have to explain over and over again that asking individuals to do things that benefit the group (keep everyone healthy) benefits the individual as well as everyone else.
