When I was last in Berlin, coming out of the city I looked up at this corporate tower, under a sky misted and hazed with chemtrails and I thought, yep, that’s the whole picture right there! It’s an absolute story from the debt sheep to the secret societies and this dark architecture beneath a poisoned sky symbolised all of it. But, thankfully they’re losing their grip, piece by piece their psychopathic plans are falling apart; enough starseeds and lightworkers are awakening to deflect their dark energy and so it’s only a matter of time.

I hope everyone is well and so as always, thank you! 😊

all it takes is a little push.

Jan Theuninck has been painting the evolution of Western totalitarianism for 20 years - he saw the evolution within the political spectrum where the socialist parties were lost (Fagospatose, 2001) in the Third Way (The third way is no way, 2004) movement of Clinton , Blair and Schröder with which they gave a face to communitarianism of the New World Order. He has often compared the latter to a new kind of National Socialism. His attention has always been fixed thanks to the more than 50 years of misery with blackmail games of the services and torture practices with chemical and energy weapons (Beyond the limit, 2001, Rinascimento, 2009, The culture of learned helplessness, 2011, Neostasi, 2012, Derailed system , 2012, The banality of Evil, 2013, Zersetzung, 2014, ils nous tiennent, 2015, Submission, 2015, Threat, 2016, Utopia, 2016, Conformity, 2017, Brainwashing, 2018, Warnung, 2019, Dein Kampf, 2019, Censorship, 2020, Post-truth society, 2020 and in 2021: Political Pandemic, New World Order, The Great Reset, Angel Vaccine, Aryan Corona Passport, Cytokine Storm, Back from never been away .

I just wanted to emphasize how small we humans are compared to our beautiful planet and how lucky with this photo. Please think of it for a minute. What are the chances for us to be born here? Statistically insignificant. And then, right when you don't expect it, instead of continuing with efforts to protect our Earth, a narcissistic man pulled us out of the Paris agreement to achieve a political score with his base. How sick, how selfish he must be? Considering that he has a bunch of children and grandchildren too, from different marriages. Well, there is only one psychological condition more dangerous than narcissism, and that is psychopathy. It really makes you sick. As David Gergen put it when the US filed its intent to withdraw from the Paris Agreement, "Yesterday we walked away from the rest of the world, and it's one of the most shameful acts in our history."

please score yourself 0 1 2 3 on each of the 20 items and record your score as a comment on the total score image

The PCL-R is a clinical rating scale (rated by a psychologist or other professional) of 20 items. Each of the items in the PCL-R is scored on a three-point scale according to specific criteria through file information and a semi-structured interview. A value of 0 is assigned if the item does not apply, 1 if it applies somewhat, and 2 if it fully applies. In addition to lifestyle and criminal behavior the checklist assesses glib and superficial charm, grandiosity, need for stimulation, pathological lying, conning and manipulating, lack of remorse, callousness, poor behavioral controls, impulsivity, irresponsibility, failure to accept responsibility for one's own actions and so forth. The scores are used to predict risk for criminal re-offence and probability of rehabilitation.

The current edition of the PCL-R officially lists four factors (1.a, 1.b, 2.a, and 2.b), which summarize the 20 assessed areas via factor analysis. The previous edition of the PCL-R[5] listed two factors. Factor 1 is labelled "selfish, callous and remorseless use of others". Factor 2 is labelled as "chronically unstable, antisocial and socially deviant lifestyle". There is a high risk of recidivism and currently small likelihood of rehabilitation for those who are labelled as having "psychopathy" on the basis of the PCL-R ratings in the manual for the test, although treatment research is ongoing.

PCL-R Factors 1a and 1b are correlated with narcissistic personality disorder and histrionic personality disorder. They are associated with extraversion and positive affect. Factor 1, the so-called core personality traits of psychopathy, may even be beneficial for the psychopath (in terms of nondeviant social functioning).

PCL-R Factors 2a and 2b are particularly strongly correlated to antisocial personality disorder and criminality and are associated with reactive anger, criminality, and impulsive violence. The target group for the PCL-R is convicted criminals. The quality of ratings may depend on how much background information is available and whether the person rated is honest and forthright.

[edit] The two factorsFactor 1: Personality "Aggressive narcissism"

Glibness/superficial charm

Grandiose sense of self-worth

Pathological lying

Cunning/manipulative

Lack of remorse or guilt

Shallow affect (genuine emotion is short-lived and egocentric)

Callousness; lack of empathy

Failure to accept responsibility for own actions

Factor 2: Case history "Socially deviant lifestyle".

Need for stimulation/proneness to boredom

Parasitic lifestyle

Poor behavioral control

Lack of realistic long-term goals

Impulsivity

Irresponsibility

Juvenile delinquency

Early behavior problems

Revocation of conditional release

Traits not correlated with either factor

Promiscuous sexual behavior

Many short-term marital relationships

Criminal versatility

Acquired behavioural sociopathy/sociological conditioning (Item 21: a newly identified trait i.e. a person relying on sociological strategies and tricks to deceive)

Early factor analysis of the PCL-R indicated it consisted of two factors. Factor 1 captures traits dealing with the interpersonal and affective deficits of psychopathy (e.g. shallow affect, superficial charm, manipulativeness, lack of empathy) whereas Factor 2 dealt with symptoms relating to antisocial behaviour (e.g. criminal versatility, impulsiveness, irresponsibility, poor behaviour controls, juvenile delinquency).

The two factors have been found by those following this theory to display different correlates. Factor 1 has been correlated with narcissistic personality disorder, low anxiety, low empathy, low stress reaction and low suicide risk but high scores on scales of achievement and well-being. In addition, the use of item response theory analysis of female offender PCL-R scores indicates factor 1 items are more important in measuring and generalizing the construct of psychopathy in women than factor 2 items.

In contrast, Factor 2 was found to be related to antisocial personality disorder, social deviance, sensation seeking, low socio-economic status[6] and high risk of suicide. The two factors are nonetheless highly correlated and there are strong indications they do result from a single underlying disorder. However, research has failed to replicate the two-factor model in female samples.

Recent statistical analysis using confirmatory factor analysis by Cooke and Michie indicated a three-factor structure, with those items from factor 2 strictly relating to antisocial behaviour (criminal versatility, juvenile delinquency, revocation of conditional release, early behavioural problems and poor behavioural controls) removed from the final model. The remaining items are divided into three factors: Arrogant and Deceitful Interpersonal Style, Deficient Affective Experience and Impulsive and Irresponsible Behavioural Style.

In the most recent edition of the PCL-R, Hare adds a fourth antisocial behaviour factor, consisting of those Factor 2 items excluded in the previous model. Again, these models are presumed to be hierarchical with a single unified psychopathy disorder underlying the distinct but correlated factors.

The Cooke & Michie hierarchical ‘three’-factor model has severe statistical problems—i.e., it actually contains ten factors and results in impossible parameters (negative variances)—as well as conceptual problems. Hare and colleagues have published detailed critiques of the Cooke & Michie model. New evidence, across a range of samples and diverse measures, now supports a four-factor model of the psychopathy construct,] which represents the Interpersonal, Affective, Lifestyle, and overt Antisocial features of the personality disorder.

Diagnostic criteria and PCL-R assessmentPsychopathy is most commonly assessed with the PCL-R, which is a clinical rating scale with 20 items. Each of the items in the PCL-R is scored on a three-point (0, 1, 2) scale according to two factors. PCL-R Factor 2 is associated with reactive anger, anxiety, increased risk of suicide, criminality, and impulsive violence.

PCL-R Factor 1, in contrast, is associated with extraversion and positive affect. Factor 1, the so-called core personality traits of psychopathy, may even be beneficial for the psychopath (in terms of nondeviant social functioning). A psychopath will score high on both factors, whereas someone with APD will score high only on Factor 2.

Both case history and a semi-structured interview are used in the analysis.

Info gathered from TopThink.

This is Behemoth, the Terrible.

I rescued her last week. I mentioned before, there is a park where I go to jog and there are always abandoned kittens there.

I was on my way home the other day, when I heard a desperate kitten's cry. I looked around and saw two little boys throwing stones at three little kittens.

I was so angered! They were around 8 years old and already into cruelty. How is this possible? When you are a kid you are supposed to like little animals!!! And true to their cowardly psychopathy, they ran away as they heard me coming.

Interesting how you don't see psychopaths targeting strong big "victims". You don't see a serial killer that kills martial arts black belts, halterophilists, etc...

Anyways, so I went to the kittens, and even though they were scared, they didn't put up a resistance of any kind. I took them home, fed them with sardine and played until they fell asleep.

Behemoth is the most active and daredavil of the three, and she has the tip of her tail broken. Derpina is the one that herp derps the most, and Blackita is the saddest one... she took a while to start feeling comfortable and at ease, and has three major wounds: one in each hind leg and one in the ribs.

They are all females and are loads of fun, but I'll probably have to find a new home for them. My mother doesn't want cats...

Stay in, watch Britain's got talent final (or should I say Finale) , watch another episode of Handmaid's tail , now that I am in season 3 I will certainly finish but god help me I've grown desperate with making no sense psychological dynamics of the main girl and her green lady counterpart, people don't seesaw between psychopathy and "normal" feelings quite so easily and quickly, this is with regard to green lady, as for red lady she is in a pickle, I understand, so she has to play nice to survive, but she surely has to understand by now that playing nice isn't going to cure psychopathy of the green lady.

Anyway it's a "shoot the cat" day.

So you got the results of that.

Profile

Name: Clayton “Clay” Sommers

Hero's name: Calibre/Caliber, nicknamed “Rodeo Killer”, “Cowboy Assassin”, “Hat-Axe” etc

Age: 30s, around 35-38

Bio: Imagine a cross between Boba Fett, cowboys and some 80’s action heroes, but set in far flung future. This anti-villain has a shrouded past, and is sort of a psychopathic. He claims to have a love for the Old West and has been a hero once, but going down a dark path. He says he burnt his house down along with his family at 8, murdered his friend who tried to rape his girlfriend (not gonna show more of the horrible stuff, the list will keep going on)

At some point he was hired by Hendrix and joined them for a while, got on and off again and briefly got associated with them. He was also hired by Mech-Prince to join E.S.P, and was a part of P.E.’s multiple mercenary teams under Walker. Being said, he is actually independent, and functions as a bounty hunter who just needs money. One of his archenemies is Blazefire/Trent Shephard, who have a dark conflict in their pasts and during their time with Hendrix. With Blazefire out of the game, he was re-hired recently and is looking for a rematch that might kill his archenemy and also heroes who oppose him.

Powers and abilities: Propulsion, can launch himself from the ground, water etc. and travel in any direction. Flight, object propulsion, he can kill or catch his targets when he swoops down then up with ease, able to generate mini explosions/bombs, make explosive punches, and can concentrate to generate mid-levels of explosions. He is a skilled fighter and marksman, also an expert at trades, hacking, engineering, talking, gambling etc.

Weaknesses: Unable to make big explosions (not even in the future, or even “soon, one day”) the amount of his power, and flying in mid air (problem solved already) requires concentration, and he can get stressed out or unable to control him from too much power. Clayton requires money when he needs it, has violent tendencies (due to claims over psychopathy). He does seem to have a ego himself, and is a little arrogant.

Equipment: High calibration pistol (not shown in this photo), two golden shurikens that he uses to throw at people or used in close quarters combat. Wears a hat that is tipped with razors secretly (Blazefire knows this) and a red mask. A set of lined, black-green armour/suit. and Various weapons acquired throughout the years

Personality: Hostile, cold, gloomy, bitter, egotistic, Despite all of this, he does show some form of caring and sympathy, as he was willing to put citizens out of harm and not wanting anyone to be hurt.

When criminologists talk about the pathology of serial killers, a warning sign they often cite is the torturing of pets and small animals. It often starts at childhood or early adulthood, and involves intentionally causing great pain, suffering and terror. The potential serial killer in-training will often put an animal in a confined space, and taunt them into position before stabbing them with a variety of small sharp objects. They often try to stab the animal multiple times, learning over time how to inflict the most pain and suffering, while keeping the animals alive as long as possible.

This trait of combined sociopathy and psychopathy is not just a lack of empathy or absence of emotions, but also a strong desire to see other living creatures suffer, and know that they’re the one causing that suffering. It is this sort of euphoric god-like state that many criminologists say will often lead to escalation, to perform the same sadism on larger animals, and eventually humans. While I agree with the diagnosis in general, I don’t necessarily agree with the conclusions. They may not be serial killers in-training.

Perhaps they’re just aspiring bull fighters.

A-Z through the DSM IVr

C: Conduct Disorder

Conduct disorder is a psychiatric category marked by a pattern of repetitive behavior wherein the rights of others or social norms are violated. Symptoms include verbal and physical aggression, cruel behavior toward people and pets, destructive behavior, lying, truancy, vandalism, and stealing. Conduct disorder is a major public health problem because youth with conduct disorder not only inflict serious physical and psychological harm on others, but they are at greatly increased risk for incarceration, injury, depression, substance abuse, and death by homicide and suicide. The syndrome is not a single medical entity but encompasses various forms of "major misbehaviour". After the age of 18, a conduct disorder may develop into antisocial personality disorder, which is related to psychopathy. Depressive conduct disorder is a combination of Conduct disorder with persistent and marked depression of mood with symptoms such as loss of interest, hopelessness, disturbances in sleep patterns and altered appetite

Conduct disorder is closely linked to psychopathy, a personality disorder characterized by an abnormal lack of empathy combined with strongly amoral conduct but masked by an ability to appear outwardly normal. Some scholars have proposed that lack of empathy and empathic concern (callous disregard for the welfare of others) is an important risk factor for conduct disorder.

When youth with aggressive conduct disorder watch an individual intentionally hurting another (like closing a piano lid), regions of the brain that process painful information are activated, as are the amygdala and ventral striatum (part of the neural circuit involved in reward processing (Decety, Michalska, Akitsuki & Lahey, 2009). Developmental psychologists and social neuroscientists have hypothesized that empathy and sympathetic concern for others are essential factors inhibiting aggression toward others.

The propensity for aggressive behavior has been hypothesized to reflect a blunted empathic response to the suffering of others. Such lack of empathy in aggressive individuals may be a consequence of failure to be aroused by the distress of others. Similarly, it has been suggested that aggressive behavior arises from abnormal processing of affective information, resulting in a deficiency in experiencing fear, empathy, and guilt, which in normally developing individuals inhibits the acting out of violent impulses.

So I have to admit I felt kinda bad about tying a scarf around my poor teddy bears necks and hanging them on the wall but it was for the sake of art...only this time I personally didn't have to suffer lol my poor stuffed animals did :(

Again, not what I originally planned but it works and I actually like it better. Though I kinda scare myself in this picture...it's surreal seeing yourself glaring and holding a huge knife lol

I've also found myself in a DOF phase...I dunno, I'm really attracted to dof and their artistic capabilities :) so you'll be seeing a lot of dof play in this project for sure

I'm hoping tomorrow or Saturday I'll do two or three pics so I can get back on schedule. It's just too late tonight and I have to shower and finish an email I was writing to this woman I know whose looking into buying a nice point and shoot camera and comparing different cameras she asked me about and trying to explain different components and what they mean. It makes me feel kinda smart and useful :) I also just got back from going to the gym with Danita...it was a good work out and some nice bonding time

Only bad news is my difficulty getting to CA at this time...last night I found out that Sacramento State University was no longer accepting applications for Fall 2011...I had to have applied by November 30, 2010...I know, it's ridiculous. There's this other college in Folsom with a branch where Garry lives now that looks nice but there's no on campus housing...so in order for that to work I'd have to get an apartment with Garry and go to school there..and even then, I dunno if they accept transfer students outside of certain community colleges in the area...you'd think there'd be more options in fricken Sacramento but there's really not...it's mostly graduate universities :( so i dunno...I might just have to take online classes for a semester and apply to Sac State for Spring 2012...but this is all assuming Garry and I can get an apartment by August...all i know is I don't wanna be here in Aurora much longer....so yeah, I had a mini break down last night and am feeling like hope is gradually fading....I just don't understand why it's so fricken hard for me to get the things I want out of life...why does it come so fricken easy for everyone else?

Anyway....end rant.

Today's meme:

Day 27 - A picture of yourself and a family member.

Wearing my own face as a mask - philosophical pondering or Buffalo Bill-esque psychopathy?

Who cares.

This image is a photographic montage comprised from three frames of a 14 minute film entitled "New Zealand, 1950's" from the Huntley Film Archives - www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fg7Oo7eg0VU

It depicts a circa 1955, South-westerly aspect of the South side of Wellington Street East, Freemans Bay from near what was the intersection with Union Street and is now the overpass across a motorway junction.

Three years earlier the territorial authority had served compulsory purchase orders on most of the properties in the area, with compensation set at 1952 valuations. However, the Council was not in a hurry to effect the destruction of our patrimony, which, amid much resentment and controversy, was eventually completed in 1979 - at 1952 valuations. In the interim property owners were reluctant to incur the expense of anything beyond what decreasing rental values would justify.

And so it came to pass that what had once been an inner city suburb renowned for the solidarity of its social cohesion and the political unrest that had been a thorn in the side of conservative governments from 1913, declined into abject dereliction.

In what was possibly one of the ugliest examples of the corporate psychopathy that might seem to have plagued the territorial authority since its earliest inception, the consequential window of opportunity was used to plaster the popular Media with images of the deplorable state into which the area fell - dodgy propaganda justifying the premeditated demise of a community.

Although the houses that comprise most of the image survived from the late 1860s until 1977, the photograph is date-able to 1955 by the lack of houses and shops in the block between Howe and Hepburn Streets, which were subsequently replaced by the Freemans Park development of apartment blocks and courtyard houses.

The only thing, which makes my heart pumping and the blood running through my veins, is the greed for money. This desire combined with psychopathy is the key to success in a society, which is completely disconnected from altruistic values. Allez! La grande bouffe attend.

tea and empathy empathy empathy

Some psychopaths are able to detect the emotions of others with such a theory of mind and can mimic caring and friendship in a convincing manner, often in an effort to exploit others. While some psychopaths can detect what others are feeling, they do not experience any reciprocal emotion or sympathy. However, some research indicates that components of neural circuits involved in empathy may also be dysfunctional in psychopathy.

The narcissistic manager will have two main sources of narcissistic supply: inanimate (status symbols like cars, gadgets or office views); and animate (flattery and attention from colleagues and subordinates).,Teammates may find everyday offers of support swiftly turn them into enabling sources of permanent supply, unless they are very careful to maintain proper boundaries.[The narcissistic manager's need to protect such supply networks will prevent objective decision-making.. Such a manager will evaluate long-term strategies according to their potential for gaining personal attention. "the will," in echoism. In contrast to the feeling of perfection. This is the place for two remarks. First, how do we differentiate between the concepts of narcissism and egoism? Well, narcissism, I believe, is the libidinal complement to egoism. When we speak of egoism, we have in view only the individual's advantage; when we talk of narcissism we are also taking his libidinal satisfaction into account. As practical motives the two can be traced separately for quite a distance. It is possible to be absolutely egoistic and yet maintain powerful object-cathexes, in so far as libidinal satisfaction in relation to the object forms part of the ego's needs. In that case, egoism will see to it that striving for the object involves no damage to the ego. It is possible to be egoistic and at the same time to be excessively narcissistic—that is to say, to have very little need for an object, whether, once more, for the purpose of direct sexual satisfaction, or in connection with the higher aspirations, derived from sexual need, which we are occasionally in the habit of contrasting with ‘sensuality’ under the name of ‘love’. In all these connections egoism is what is self-evident and constant, while narcissism is the variable element. The opposite to egoism, altruism, does not, as a concept, coincide with libidinal object-cathexis, but is distinguished from it by the absence of longings for sexual satisfaction. When someone is completely in love, however, altruism converges with libidinal object-cathexis. As a rule the sexual object attracts a portion of the ego's narcissism to itself, and this becomes noticeable as what is known as the ‘sexual overvaluation’ of the object. If in addition there is an altruistic transposition of egoism on to the sexual object, the object becomes supremely powerful; it has, as it were, absorbed the ego." (Freud, Introductory Lectures (1919), pp. 417–18).Narcissism is the pursuit of gratification from vanity or egotistic admiration of one's own attributes. The term originated from Greek mythology, where the young Narcissus fell in love with his own image reflected in a pool of water. Narcissism is a concept in psychoanalytic theory, which was popularly introduced in Sigmund Freud's essay On Narcissism (1914). The American Psychiatric Association has had the classification narcissistic personality disorder in its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) since 1968, drawing on the historical concept of megalomania.Narcissism is also considered a social or cultural problem. It is a factor in trait theory used in various self-report inventories of personality[ such as the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory. It is one of the three dark triadic personality traits (the others being psychopathy and Machiavellianism). Except in the sense of primary narcissism or healthy self-love, narcissism is usually considered a problem in a person's or group's relationships with self and others. Narcissism is not the same as egocentrism.Narcissistic personality disorder affects an estimated 1% of the general population. Although most individuals have some narcissistic traits, high levels of narcissism can manifest themselves in a pathological form as narcissistic personality disorder (NPD), whereby the patient overestimates his or her abilities and has an excessive need for admiration and affirmation. A revision of NPD took place in the DSM-5. In this revision, NPD saw dramatic changes to its definition. The general move towards a dimensional (personality trait-based) view of the Personality Disorders has been maintained. Some narcissists may have a limited or minimal capability to experience emotions.Healthy narcissism might exist in all individuals. Freud said that this is an original state from which the individual develops the love object.[qualify evidence] He argued that healthy narcissism is an essential part of normal development.According to Freud, the love of the parents for their child and their attitude toward their child could be seen as a revival and reproduction of their own narcissism. The child has an omnipotence of thought; the parents stimulate that feeling because in their child they see the things that they have never reached themselves. Compared to neutral observers, parents tend to overvalue the qualities of their child. When parents act in an extreme opposite style and the child is rejected or inconsistently reinforced depending on the mood of the parent, the self-needs of the child are not met.[citation needed] Freud contrasts the natural development of active-egoistic and passive-altruistic tendencies in the individual with narcissism, in the former, and what Trevor Pederson[ refers to as echoism, in the latter.Healthy narcissism has to do with a strong feeling of "own love" protecting the human being against illness. Eventually, however, the individual must love the other, "the object love to not become ill." The individual becomes ill as a result of the frustration created when he is unable to love the object. In pathological narcissism such as the narcissistic personality disorder, the person’s libido has been withdrawn from objects in the world and produces megalomania. The clinical theorists Kernberg, Kohut and Millon all see pathological narcissism as a possible outcome in response to unempathic and inconsistent early childhood interactions. They suggested that narcissists try to compensate in adult relationships. The pathological condition of narcissism is, as Freud suggested, a magnified, extreme manifestation of healthy narcissism. In developmental terms, two rather different trajectories can be distinguished with respect to egotism – the one individual, the other cultural.

With respect to the developing individual, a movement takes place from egocentricity to sociality during the process of growing up.[8] It is normal for an infant to have an inflated – almost a majestic – sense of egotism. The over-evaluation of one's own ego regularly appears in childish forms of love – in large part because the baby is to himself everything, omnipotent to the best of their own knowledge.[Optimal development allows a gradual reconciliation to a more realistic view of one's own place in the world – a lessening of the egotistical swollen head.[12] Less adequate adjustment may later lead to what has been called defensive egotism, serving to overcompensate for the fragility of the underlying concept of self..Robin Skynner however considered that in the main growing up leads to a state where "your ego is still there, but it's taking its proper limited place among all the other egos".However, alongside such a positive trajectory of diminishing individual egotism, a rather different arc of development can be noted in cultural terms, linked to what has been seen as the increasing infantilism of (post)modern society..Whereas in the nineteenth century egotism was still widely regarded as a traditional vice – for Nathaniel Hawthorne egotism was a sort of diseased self-contemplation – Romanticism had already set in motion a countervailing current, what Richard Eldridge described as a kind of "cultural egotism, substituting the individual imagination for vanishing social tradition". The romantic idea of the self-creating individual – of a self-authorizing, artistic egotism[18] – then took on broader social dimensions in the following century. Keats might still attack Wordsworth for the regressive nature of his retreat into the egotistical sublime;[19] but by the close of the twentieth century egotism had been naturalized much more widely by the Me generation into the Culture of Narcissism. In the 21st century, romantic egotism has been seen as feeding into techno-capitalism in two complementary ways: on the one hand, through the self-centred consumer, focused on their own self-fashioning through brand 'identity'; on the other through the equally egotistical voices of 'authentic' protest, as they rage against the machine, only to produce new commodity forms that serve to fuel the system for further consumption. With regard to the condition of healthy narcissism, it is suggested that this is correlated with good psychological health. Self-esteem works as a mediator between narcissism and psychological health. Therefore, because of their elevated self-esteem, deriving from self-perceptions of competence and likability, high narcissists are relatively free of worry and gloom.Other researchers suggested that healthy narcissism cannot be seen as ‘good’ or ‘bad’; however, it depends on the contexts and outcomes being measured. In certain social contexts such as initiating social relationships, and with certain outcome variables, such as feeling good about oneself, healthy narcissism can be helpful. In other contexts, such as maintaining long-term relationships and with other outcome variables, such as accurate self-knowledge, healthy narcissism can be unhelpful.People with narcissistic personality disorder are characterized by their persistent grandiosity, excessive need for admiration, and a disdain and lack of empathy for others. These individuals often display arrogance, a sense of superiority, and power-seeking behaviors.Narcissistic personality disorder is different from having a strong sense of self-confidence; people with NPD typically value themselves over others to the extent that they disregard the feelings and wishes of others and expect to be treated as superior regardless of their actual status or achievements. In addition, people with NPD may exhibit fragile egos, an inability to tolerate criticism, and a tendency to belittle others in an attempt to validate their own superiority.People with NPD tend to exaggerate their skills and accomplishments as well as their level of intimacy with people they consider to be high-status. Their sense of superiority may cause them to monopolize conversations and to become impatient or disdainful when others talk about themselves. In the course of a conversation, they may purposefully or unknowingly disparage or devalue the other person by overemphasizing their own success. When they are aware that their statements have hurt someone else, they tend to react with contempt and to view it as a sign of weakness.[7] When their own ego is wounded by a real or perceived criticism, their anger can be disproportionate to the situation, but typically, their actions and responses are deliberate and calculated.Despite occasional flare-ups of insecurity, their self-image is primarily stable (i.e., overinflated). To the extent that people are pathologically narcissistic, they can be controlling, blaming, self-absorbed, intolerant of others' views, unaware of others' needs, the effects of their behavior on others, and insist that others see them as they wish to be seen.Narcissistic individuals use various strategies to protect the self at the expense of others. They tend to devalue, derogate, insult, blame others and they often respond to threatening feedback with anger and hostility.Since the fragile ego of individuals with NPD is hypersensitive to perceived criticism or defeat, they are prone to feelings of shame, humiliation and worthlessness over minor or even imagined incidents. They usually mask these feelings from others with feigned humility, isolating socially or they may react with outbursts of rage, defiance, or by seeking revenge. The merging of the "inflated self-concept" and the "actual self" is seen in the inherent grandiosity of narcissistic personality disorder. Also inherent in this process are the defense mechanisms of denial, idealization and devaluation..According to the DSM-5, "Many highly successful individuals display personality traits that might be considered narcissistic. Only when these traits are inflexible, maladaptive, and persisting and cause significant functional impairment or subjective distress do they constitute narcissistic personality disorder."Although overconfidence tends to make individuals with NPD ambitious, it does not necessarily lead to success and high achievement professionally. These individuals may be unwilling to compete or may refuse to take any risks in order to avoid appearing like a failure. In addition, their inability to tolerate setbacks, disagreements or criticism, along with lack of empathy, make it difficult for such individuals to work cooperatively with others or to maintain long-term professional relationships with superiors and colleagues. There is evidence that narcissistic personality disorder is heritable, and individuals are much more likely to develop NPD if they have a family history of the disorder.[Studies on the occurrence of personality disorders in twins determined that there is a moderate to high heritability for narcissistic personality disorder. However the specific genes and gene interactions that contribute to its cause, and how they may influence the developmental and physiological processes underlying this condition, have yet to be determined.

This is the 4th year that I have put together a list of my favorite songs of the year based on my “meta-review” of every “best of” and “most popular” list I could find.

This year, I listened to songs from more than 50 such year-end lists, including the lists from music-savvy friends, President Obama’s year-end favorites list, NYT, the Guardian, NPR, Rolling Stone, Spin, Pitchfork, Megacritic, the various Billboard charts, Robert Christgau (the Dean Emeritus of rock critics), and many more

Last year, I discovered Popnable, a Bulgarian ranking service that shows the top songs by YouTube views from more than 90 countries. For the first time, it truly became possible for me to hear the most popular pop songs from all over the world.

Popnable also enormously expanded the number of songs that become contenders for the annual favorites list. I’ve always had a hard limit of 100 songs on the annual favorites list, but 2019 was the first year that I actually had to apply it.

Of course, this is my personal favorites list, which I do not pretend is any kind of “best of” list. Everyone’s personal preferences are different.

I tend to be biased in favor of traditional country music, Americana, trap, reggaeton, punk, garage bands/lofi, strong bass lines, feedback and distortion, sweet harmonies, hooks, echo, short songs, and silly juvenile songs (especially about sex).

I tend to be biased against long songs, slow songs (especially shoe gaze), intellectual jazz, remakes, modern country music, old school hip hop, gangsta rap, political songs, songs that use the N-word and the B-word, heavy production (autotuning, syndrums, etc.), and most of all songs that are not on Spotify. But there are many songs on this list that overcome my negative biases.

The entire 2019 list, except one song (#99) is available as a public Spotify playlist called “2019 Snopes Favorites”. I find that links to Spotify often don’t work, but you might try it here –

open.spotify.com/playlist/7sgQQHQGEjHsCznyRTXJXF?si=vkIyV...

Here is the 2019 list, in reverse order, with a little commentary on each song.

100. Patient O - Paper Cut –

When I was assembling this list, this classic garage band song made the first two cuts on its own merits. However, once I did some research about the band, all objectivity vanished and there was no doubt the song was going to make the 2019 list.

The sweet-voiced lead singer, Tess Majors, was stabbed to death in December in NYC by a 14-year-old boy. Tess, a freshman at Barnard, was 18 when she died. The band was from Charlottesville, Virginia.

99. Mandili Trio - Samshoblo (The Motherland)

This is the only song on this list that is not on Spotify. The Mandili Trio is three young women who film themselves (apparently with a hand-held cell phone) walking around the Georgia countryside singing folk songs and shamelessly flirting with the camera. I think they’re a big deal in Georgia (they dominate the Popnable Georgia chart).

98. Stella Donnelly – Tricks

Donnelly (now 27) grew up in small towns in Wales and Australia.

97. The HU – Yuve Yuve Yu

The HU combine heavy metal with traditional Mongolian throat singing.

96. Santana - Do You Remember Me

A time machine back to 1969.

95. Vampire Weekend - Harmony Hall

Preppy band from the late 2000s comes back with more catchy pop.

94. Big Thief – Not

Big Thief is a four-piece band whose members mostly are Berklee College of Music grads. They make complicated and atmospheric, but hooky, music.

93. Dyler - Kan Yo Mkan

Dyler is coming out of the same post-Millenial genre as the better known Lil Nas X and 100 Gecs. At 16, he was an Instagram influencer who was prosecuted by the Saudi government for posting a (non-revealing) photo of himself sitting on the toilet.

At 18, he is making sprung, Tik Tok(ish) rap songs that are going to #1 on the Popnable Saudi Arabia chart.

92. Angelica Garcia - Jicama

Beautiful, wispy song from a Richmond, Virginia singer of Mexican and Salvadoran ancestry. Thanks to President Obama for bringing Ms. Garcia to my attention on his interesting 2019 faves list.

91. Dejan Matic - Gde Ste Sada Prijatelji (Where Are You Now Friends)

In listening to the Popnable charts for the various former Yugoslavia countries, I’ve really gotten to like the sound of the chant-like songs in Serbo-Croatian (as the common language used to be called).

Dejan Matic and his twin brother, who both went blind shortly after their birth, are popular singers in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

90. Anitta – Combatchy

Very popular Brazilian pop singer. “Combatchy” currently has more than 58 million plays on Spotify.

89. Dona Onete – Jamburana

Dona Onete had a long career as a Brazilian history teacher, folklorist, and author of children’s books. She cut her first album when she was 73 years old. She was 81 when she recorded “Jamburana.”

88. FLA - Ice Cream Man

The Popnable charts are very educational. Who would have guessed that the Mongolian pop charts are dominated by Atlanta/Colombia-style trap? “Ice Cream Man” is very catchy, but also don’t miss FLA’s “Ilt Lit,” his hilariously obscene declaration (in English) of his love for trap.

87. Orville Peck - Dead of Night

Orville Peck is a pseudonym for a (self-declared) gay country singer who performs wearing a fringed Lone Ranger mask to conceal his identity. He sounds very much like the Magnetic Fields, whose “69 Love Songs” is one of my favorite albums.

86. Tinariwen & Cass McCombs - Kel Tinawen

Tinariwen are Tuareg musicians from northern Mali who have been performing since 1979. Cass McCombs is an eclectic American musician who has performed with bands ranging from the Decemberists to Cat Power to the Meat Puppets.

85. Rat Queen - Northeast Ohio Rocks

It’s hard to find out much about Rat Queen. Their Bandcamp page says they are Eleanor Linafelt and Robyn Newcomb and that they are “sometimes in D.C.” But some googling suggests they are from Wooster, Ohio. “Northeast Ohio Rocks” is their most popular song on Spotify, but it currently has only 2,000 plays (which is very unfair).

84. Miranda Lambert - It All Comes Out in the Wash

If you wear a white shirt to a crawfish boil

Stonewashed jeans while you're changing the oil

When you find yourself dating the bridesmaid's ex

You accidentally bring him to the wedding, whoops

If you pour yourself a Merlot to go

You dip your fries in your ketchup on a bumpy road

You spill the beans to your mama, sister got knocked up

In a truck at the 7-Eleven, don't sweat it

'Cause it'll all come out, all come out in the wash

83. Nella - Voy

Originally from Venezuela, Nella is another talented grad of the Berklee College of Music. Voy is from her debut album.

82. Sailors – Wamlambez

“Wamlambez” has been a huge hit in Kenya, with numerous homemade tribute videos popping up, including one of a former prime minister and another of mourners at a funeral dancing the wamlambez. There is even a Chipmunks version of the song.

“Wamlambez” is the most popular song of the popular “gengeton” genre of music. Gengeton is characterized by its own slang words (all with dirty meanings).

kiss100.co.ke/wamlambez-lolo-lalez-here-is-an-updated-she...

The Kenyan government has attempted to ban “Wamlambez” and other gengeton songs.

www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-46371971

The YouTube video for “Wambalez” is joyfully in-your-face.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=ilnOAwKuZLQ

81. Sault - Don’t Waste My Time

Sault released two hooky, funky albums in 2019, but is not releasing any information about who they are.

80. Paul Cauthen - Cocaine Country Dancing

Country music appears to be branching out to varieties of substance abuse other than alcoholism.

79. The Paranoid Style - An Endless Cycle of Meaningless Behavior

“Endless Cycle,” by DC’s The Paranoid Style, is about Ayn Rand, Alan Greenspan, and Paul Ryan.

78. Mdou Moctar - Kamane Tarhanin

Guitar hero Mdou Moctar is a Tuareg musician from Niger. “Kamane Tarhanin” is very good, but his live show is in a different universe. Go see him live if you ever have a chance.

77. The Golden Glows - When I Went to Leland

The Golden Glows recorded an album of remakes of the field work songs of prisoners at Parchman Prison in Mississippi. “When I Went to Leland” is a complete reworking of this field recording by Alan Lomax in 1947. research.culturalequity.org/get-audio-detailed-recording....

76. The Regrettes - California Friends

The Regrettes are a punky four-piece power pop band from LA. Except for the drummer, they are all women.

75. NOËP featuring Chinchilla - fk this up

I still tell my English as a Second Language classes that the F-word is a highly offensive word that they should never use, but I feel like I’m lying to them. The F-word is so ubiquitous in pop music, movies, podcasts, etc. that it really can’t be viewed as a curse word any more.

NOËP is an electro-pop musician from Tallinn, Estonia. Chinchilla is a female singer from London who styles herself as an “urban”singer (whatever that means).

74. Oumar Konate & Makan Camara - Koima Djinn

Omar Konate is a superstar in Mali.

73. The bird and the bee - Hot for Teacher

Boy-girl hipster duo from LA with a swing band-ish update on Van Halen’s classic, with new, more literate, but even smarmier lyrics.

72. Bones UK - Pretty Waste

Somewhat bizarrely, Bones UK, whose most listened-to song on Spotify has only 6 million plays and whose 2019 debut album was self-released, was nominated for a 2020 Grammy for “Best Rock Performance.” They didn’t win, but still it’s weird.

71. Blackbear - hot girl bummer

This sweetly melodic pop song prominently features the F-word. Blackbear is really Matthew Tyler Musto, who grew up in Florida, Atlanta, and LA.

70. Better Oblivion Community Center - Dylan Thomas

Better Oblivion Community Center is a two person group with longtime emo star Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes) and indie musician Phoebe Bridgers.

69. 21 Savage - a lot

21 Savage is an Atlanta rapper. He uses the N-word a lot more often than I’m comfortable with, but this is a hooky and funny (if disturbingly self-loathing) song.

68. Purple Mountains – That’s Just the Way That I Feel

David Berman of the Silver Jews had been a recluse with chronic depression for over a decade when he formed a new band, Purple Mountains, and recorded a jaunty album filled with erudite and witty wordplay about how much he wanted to die. He died of suicide the day before the Purple Mountains were to begin their tour in support of the new album.

“The end of all wanting is all I’ve been wanting,

And that’s just the way that I feel. ”

It’s a brilliant, funny, sad album.

67. Sneaks - Holy Cow I Never Saw a Girl Like Her

Sneaks is DC-based musician Eva Moolchan. She deserves huge credit for realizing that the great hook of “Holy Cow I Never Saw a Girl Like Her” could be fully explored in only 55 seconds.

66. Lana Del Rey - hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me to have - but I have it

Honestly, I’m really kind of embarrassed to have not one but two Lana Del Rey songs on this year’s fave list.

65. Blake Shelton - God’s Country

Blake Shelton’s producers are masters of the echo chamber (or whatever the modern electronic equivalent of an echo chamber is).

64. Sego - Neon Me Out

Originally two guys from Provo, Utah, Sego is now a bass-heavy four-member band based in LA.

63. that dog. - Just the Way

LA-based alt-rock band. Lead singer Anna Waronker is the daughter of recording industry fat cat Lenny Waronker, so I’d love to be able to dismiss them as no-talent beneficiaries of nepotism, but they’re actually really good.

62. Midland - Cheatin’ Songs

Midland’s 2019 album “Let It Roll” fell well short of their brilliant 2017 neo-traditional country “On the Rocks,” but “Cheatin’ Songs” is a really good reworking of one of the most well worn country genres. “Sometimes her jacket smells like cigarettes, but she hates the smoke.”

61. Hamada Helal - Ashrab Shay

I listened to a boatload of hits in Arabic from the Popnable charts this year and my ears got familiar with the circular rhythms of those pop songs. This one by Hamada Helal, an Egyptian singer, was my favorite.

60. Lana Del Rey - Fuck it I love you

Lake Placid, New York’s brightest star. And Lake Placid has hosted the Winter Olympics twice, in 1932 and 1980.

59. Enzo Inshall – Vanodherera

Zimbabwean dancehall chanter. He has gotten in trouble with the government for videos that were perceived as having excessive sexual innuendo.

58. Our Native Daughters - Black Myself

Our Native Daughters is a superstar group made up of four female African-American (biracial?) musicians. Rhiannon Giddens (formerly of the Carolina Chocolate Drops) is one of the best musicians working in America today. Allison Russell (who’s actually Canadian) makes gorgeous music with her husband as the Birds of Chicago. Leyla McCalla is very talented New Orleans-based folk musician.

“Black Myself” is by Amethyst Kiah, from Johnson City, Tennessee, a banjo player who is the only member of Our Native Daughters whose work I’m not familiar with.

57. Ashley McBryde - One Night Standards

In the 21st century, it’s not only the girls who all get prettier at closing time.

56. The Shivas - Gloria

The Shivas are a hard working, steadily touring band from Portland, Oregon.

55. The Lumineers – Gloria

The Lumineers are a very popular folk rock band from Denver. They specialize in shimmering beautiful multi-part harmonies. They’ve toured with Tom Petty and U2.

54. Miranda Lambert - Tequila Does

Miranda Lambert had a great year, topped by this classic country alcoholic song. “Hand me a sombrero, 'cause Jose Cuervo is taking me home tonight.” She has two songs on this year’s faves list.

53. Injury Reserve featuring Rico Nasty – Jawbreaker

Injury Reserve is a hip hop trio from Tempe, Arizona.

52. Rhiannon Giddens (with Francesco Turrisi) - Brown Baby

My wife and I have been worshipful fans of Rhiannon Giddens ever since she led the string band Carolina Chocolate Drops (we saw them play on the high school football field in Fredericksburg, Virginia before an audience of maybe 75 people; Toni talked to them afterward about maybe coming to her elementary school to play for the students and they were open to the idea).

It’s not that surprising to see Giddens progress to being maybe the most impressive musician working in America today. In 2019, she put together the African-American female super group Our Native Daughters and made the brilliant album “There Is No Other,” with Francesco Turrisi, a jazzy Italian multi-instrumentalist. Giddens glides between traditional music of the Americas, Europe, Africa, and the Arabic world and it’s breathtaking.

51. Ace Mo & John FM - Where They At???

There have been more house music “where the _____ girls at?” songs than I can keep up with. Ace Mo and John FM carry the meme to a whole new level, starting with the fairly standard, “Where the black girls at, nomadic girls at, Puerto Rican girls at, Dominicana girls at” to the somewhat more quirky, “Romani girls at, Estonian girls at,” to the truly bizarre, “where the cop killers at,” “exotic dancers at,” “where the freedom fighters at,” “where the sex workers at,” “where the brown berets at,” and on and on for a full 7 entertaining minutes.

50. Craig Finn – Blankets

Craig Finn is the front man for the Hold Steady. I think I prefer his less staccato, more atmospheric storytelling on his solo albums.

49. Rhiannon Giddens (with Francesco Turrisi) - Little Margaret

The New Yorker ran this fascinating biographical piece on Rhiannon Giddens this past year: www.newyorker.com/magazine/2019/05/20/rhiannon-giddens-an...

Giddens has five songs on this year’s faves list – three with Francesco Turrisi and two with her supergroup Our Native Daughters.

48. 100 gecs – ringtone

100 gecs is an American experimental musical duo, originally from suburban St. Louis. This is one of two 100 gecs songs on this year’s list.

47. Lizzo – Boys

Lizzo seems like she came out of nowhere this year to become a superstar, but her first album was released in 2013 and Time magazine named her a “musician to watch” in 2014. She has two songs on this year’s faves list.

46. Michete - Come Get It, Daddy

Homophobes and the humorless should avoid this song.

45. Spoon - No Bullets Spent

Austin’s finest haven’t put out an album since 2017, so this fine single was very welcome.

44. Sevdaliza – Martyr

Sevdaliza (born Sevda Alizedah) was born in Tehran, but moved to the Netherlands at age 5. After playing basketball in college and for the Dutch national team, she began to make highly polished, sinuous music.

43. Todrick Hall - Nails, Hair, Hips, Heels

Hall is a former American Idol contestant and has appeared on several RuPaul-related shows. He played Lola, a drag queen cabaret performer, in the Broadway production of Kinky Boots.

42. Blanco Brown - The Git Up

“The Git Up,” Brown’s debut single, has more than 161 million plays on Spotify and hit #1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart. Several critics have called it a sequel to “Old Town Road.”

41. black midi - Near DT, MI

black midi is a guitar-heavy band from London, with strong influences from Eighties groups (notably the Cure), and an impressively talented drummer. Their debut album Schlagenheim is very good, but it frankly feels underpowered compared to their blistering live performances.

The critical buzz about black midi started with this compelling 26-minute live video released by Icelandic radio station KEXT, which is way better than the studio album:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMn1UuEIVvA

Their live performance here in DC at U Street Music Hall was also far superior to their studio album (which is not to say the studio material isn’t excellent, but that this is an amazing live group).

40. Sefa & DopeNation – Shuga

Sefa is a rising star in Ghana. She is a big girl who plays off a flagrantly sexpot image, as the “Shuga” video makes clear (she’s the lady in the orange swimsuit):

www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPcT0fhSpG0

She believes that fashion and music go hand in hand and is committed to wearing racy clothes that slay every day. “I just prove to people that your size doesn’t matter. Where what you love and love what you wear. Because it doesn’t matter what you wear, how well you rock it makes it nice.”

www.pulse.com.gh/lifestyle/fashion/20-questions-on-fashio...

Sefa also released a long video interview declaring her intention to finally lose her virginity in 2019, at age 24.

www.ghanaweb.com/GhanaHomePage/entertainment/I-m-still-a-...

39. Tove Lo - Glad He’s Gone

Tove Lo is a Swedish grunge-pop singer who has battled YouTube because of the sexual content of some of her videos. She was on my 2016 and 2017 faves lists and returns this year with this explicit but decidedly anti-sex song.

38. Ed Sheeran featuring Camila Cabello - South of the Border

Sheeran released an album of duets with other big pop stars. The duet with former Fifth Harmony member Camila Cabello was the best of the bunch.

37. Rhiannon Giddens (with Francesco Turrisi) - Pizzica di San Vito

There are many excellent performances of the traditional Italian tarantella, “Pizzica di San Vito,” but Giddens’ and Turrisi’s sparse take is unique.

36. Morgan Wallen - Whiskey Glasses

- Alcoholic country music is alive and well (and well represented on this year’s list).

www.youtube.com/watch?v=FjBp30kjzTc

35. that dog. - If You Just Didn’t Do It

The song with punchy melodies and crisp songwriting is the second from that dog on this year’s list. Apparently, the group was a big deal in the Nineties, though I don’t remember ever hearing of them before.

34. Orezi & Sheebah - Sweet Sensation

Nigerian pop star Orezi and Ugandan pop star Sheebah team up for this sweet reggaeton tribute to … ummm … good sex.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ZThZa6Ti8Y

33. La Santa Cecilia - I’ve Been Thinking

La Santa Cecilia is a Grammy-winning, self-described bolero-punk/bossa-nova/soul band based in LA. The fathers of three of the four members died this year and “I’ve Been Thinking” is about their grief.

32. Chuck Mead - Shake

Mead, a native of Lawrence, Kansas, was formerly a member of BR549, a virtuoso country group active from 1993 to 2006. “Shake” is from Mead’s fourth solo album, Close to Home, which has 11 songs on it. The album is so good that 8 of the 11 songs from Close to Home made my first cut of my favorite songs from 2019. I finally got it down to only two Mead songs on the final list, but it was tough.

31. Our Native Daughters - Moon Meets the Sun

The Songs of Our Native Daughters by “supergroup” Our Native Daughters is an exploration of female African-American history. As you’d probably expect from such an intellectual enterprise, some of the songs come across as a little academic. But two songs (both on this year’s list) “Black Myself” and “Moon Meets the Sun” are gems.

“You put the shackles on our feet, But we're dancing, You steal our very tongue..., You steal our children, But we're dancing, You make us hate our very skin But we're dancing, But we're dancing.”

30. Tanya Tucker - I Don’t Owe You Anything

Tucker’s 2019 comeback was delightful. Her Grammy-winning “Bring My Flowers Now” was the last song cut from this year’s 100 faves list. “I Don’t Owe You Anything” is even better, the perfect “drop dead, asshole” song.

29. Stef Chura - 3D Girl - My girl is three dimensional

“3D Girl” is great, although I have to admit that its lyrics are so cryptic that I have no idea what it’s about.

Detroit-based Stef Chura’s second album Midnight is produced by Will Toledo, frontman of Car Seat Headrest, one of my favorite current bands. Chura has a tough, spiky, guitar-driven sound that is reminiscent of Courtney Barnett and, perhaps unsurprisingly, Car Seat Headrest.

Midnight is terrific. Chura has three songs on this year’s list and it took a real effort to limit her to only three songs.

28. Poppy - Concrete

Poppy grew up in Nashville and relocated to LA when she was 18, where she established a wildly popular YouTube channel “Poppy.” She has also created a member organization known as “PoppyChurch.” Poppy has also published a graphic novel and has starred in The Jester’s Tale, “an augmented reality experience.”

Poppy is deeply silly, but “Concrete” is a good song. Some critics have called it part of the “baby metal” genre, but I’d say she’s channeling Queen. (Update: My son informs me that Poppy is the creation of a male Svengali. So were the Monkees.)

27. Arthur Hanlon - Como Suena el Piano

Irish-American from Detroit who has become a prominent Latin jazz band leader.

26. YG, Tyga & Jon Z - Go Loko

Mariachi meets trap (warning for sensitive ears, this song is filthy).

25. Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers - For Real

I miss Tom Petty so much.

24. DakhaBrakha - ПЛИВе ЧОВеН

I have no idea what this gorgeous song by a group from Kiev is about. Google translates the title (in Ukrainian) as “Swimming Man.”

23. Purple Mountains – Darkness and Cold

Purple Mountains have three songs on this year’s faves list. All three are so witty that they are fun to listen to, even though they’re all about deep depression and suicide. But the promotional video for “Darkness and Cold” is hard to watch:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZKMa-ByLBQ

22. Mikolas Josef - Abu Dhabi

Josef (a Czech) has spent years busking throughout Europe. This insanely catchy song should be his breakthrough to the big time, but it inexplicably has fewer than 2 million listens on Spotify.

21. Stef Chura - Scream

- Detroit girl (watch the video)

www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0X5tCHTJvg

20. Billie Eilish - Bury a Friend

It’s fascinating that Billie Eilish and her brother were homeschooled. I can’t say they are particularly well adjusted socially.

19. Fontaines D.C. - The Boys in the Better Land

“You're not alive until you start kicking, When the room is spinning and the words ain't sticking, And the radio is all about a runaway model, With a face like sin and a heart like a James Joyce novel, Saying "Sister, sister, how I missed ya, missed ya, Let's go wrist to wrist and take the skin off of my blister.” If you're a Rock Star, Porn Star, Superstar, Doesn't matter what you are, get yourself a good car, get outta here.”

Despite their name, Fontaines D.C. are Irish and have nothing to do with Washington, D.C. They added “D.C.” to their name when they learned that another band in LA had the same name. “D.C.” stands for “Dublin City.”

18. Mountain Goats - An Antidote to Strychnine

Cult hero John Darnielle (who is the only consistent member of the Mountain Goats – one of my top five active bands) has a podcast called “I Only Listen to the Mountain Goats.”

17. Dry Cleaning - Magic of Meghan

This cerebrally jagged tribute to Meghan Markle is the polar opposite of the Sex Pistols’ “God Save the Queen.”

16. girl in red - bad idea

- From Wikipedia:” Marie Ulven Ringheim (born 16 February 1999), known professionally as Girl in Red (often stylized in all lowercase as girl in red), is a Norwegian indie pop singer-songwriter…. Ringheim has been named a "queer icon" by Paper, and a "phenomenon" that is "one of the most astute and exciting singer-songwriters working in the world of guitar music" by New York Times. She is known for appealing to young teenagers with her "bedroom pop anthems about queer romance and mental health." Her music, which is made from the comfort of her bedroom has amassed over 150 million streams as of October 2019.”

girl in red has two songs on this year’s faves list.

15. Stef Chura - Sweet Sweet Midnight

Will Toledo of Car Seat Headrest duets with Chura on this song about a friend who died while on vacation. The melodies and screams are both good.

14. 100 gecs - stupid horse

Best YouTube reader comment on “stupid horse” (from JoetheToe):

“The 21st century has peaked, cancel the next 81 years.”

www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSZI6sYgXCA

13. Natti Natasha - Oh Daddy (Spanglish version)

Cover songs are usually a turnoff for me. But this transmogrification of Richie Valens’ “Donna” (1958) by Dominican star Natti Natasha is exhilarating.

12. Shawn Mendes & Camila Cabello - Señorita

It seems like Cuban-American Cabello did duets with every singer in the world this year. She should gotten lead billing on this seductive song.

Apparently, she and Mendes are now a thing:

www.justjared.com/2020/02/15/shawn-mendes-camila-cabello-...

11. Otoboke Beaver - Don’t light my fire

There is a tradition of good Japanese noise bands, but these three women are the best ever. www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkWfFXnLpYg

10. Chuck Mead - Billy Doesn’t Know He’s Bad

“Psychopathy is a constellation of psychological symptoms that typically emerges early in childhood and affects all aspects of a sufferer’s life including relationships with family, friends, work, and school. The symptoms of psychopathy include shallow affect, lack of empathy, guilt and remorse, irresponsibility, and impulsivity.”

09. Gary Clark, Jr. - This Land

Ordinarily, I would dock even a great song a few notches for overt political content, but this song so perfectly fits my politics (and my anger about where we are) that I made an exception and left it alone and undocked as one of my ten fave songs of 2019. WARNING: This song features repeated use of the n-word and not the bowdlerized version of the word that ends with an “a.”

08. Lizzo - Juice

“Gotta blame it on the goose”

07. Kevin Morby - Oh My God

My wife actively participated in the final stage of assembling this year’s favorites list, once I’d culled the candidates down to the last 250 or so songs. As soon as I cued up this ethereal song by Kevin Morby, Toni immediately said, “That really sounds like that Ethiopian nun” -- referring to Ethiopian composer (and nun) Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou, who is still alive at age 93 and is well worth googling to discover her amazing body of work. Toni’s right, Morby is clearly channeling Guebrou here.

[NOTE: A big thank you to Matt Fenton, my favorite opposing counsel of the year, for turning me on to Morby.]

06. The Specials - 10 Commandments

Around 1980, we bought a used 1976 Volvo from a guy we found in the Washington Post classified ads. It was by far the nicest car we’d ever had (I think it cost more than a thousand dollars). But it turned out that 1976 was the only lemon year that Volvo ever had. Problems were unending. The air conditioning broke on a nightmarishly hot family trip to Mississippi (Elizabeth screamed her protest for hours).

But the silver lining was that a tape got stuck in the Volvo’s cassette player and couldn’t be ejected for months -- and it was the Specials’ wonderful first album.

“10 Commandments” is a worthy successor to that opinionated and beautiful masterpiece. How many other bands from 1979 are still making great music with sharp elbows?

05. Movimiento Feminista - Un Violador en tu Camino

Live from Chile - www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zad42X6Rpg

04. Billie Eilish - Bad Guy

“In the United States, "Bad Guy" ended the record-breaking 19-week run of "Old Town Road" by Lil Nas X featuring Billy Ray Cyrus.” [Billboard headline]

Eilish has two songs on this year’s faves list.

03. Lil Nas X featuring Billy Ray Cyrus - Old Town Road

“Winner's Circle: Lil Nas X's 'Old Town Road' Breaks Record With 17th Week Atop Billboard Hot 100” [Billboard headline]

02. girl in red - dead girl in the pool

www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pzq4TEU-wHo FWIW - girl in red also had the #2 song on my faves list from 2018 (“i wanna be your girlfried”)

01. Purple Mountains - Margaritas at the Mall

The Purple Mountains album is really a solo album by David Berman (formerly of the Silver Jews). Coupled with the last episode of The Good Place, this album might make 2019-2020 the era of the jaunty, life-affirming suicide.

“How long can a world go on under such a subtle God? How long can a world go on with no new word from God?”

Sincimanic death

A physical fear

PSYCHOPATHY RED

After death gratification!

TROUBLE IN THE TOWN

Fantastic study of Human Psychopathy. One of the best Sci-fi Horror I have ever read. So far, this series is very entertaining. 5 stars. It only took me 5 days to read.

"Study Links Selfies To Narcissism And Psychopathy":

www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/01/12/selfies-narcissism-psyc...

The cap is on to look more like a narcissist than a psychopath.

The attempted duck face was just for me.

Psychopathy is a personality or mental disorder characterised partly by antisocial behavior, a diminished capacity for remorse, and poor behavioural controls. As a diagnostic category in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, psychopathy has been replaced by antisocial personality disorder (ASPD).

While no psychiatric or psychological organization has sanctioned a diagnosis of "psychopathy" itself, assessments of psychopathy characteristics are widely used in criminal justice settings in some nations and may have important consequences for individuals. The term is also used by the general public, in popular press, and in fictional portrayals.

Although there are behavioral similarities, psychopathy and ASPD, according to criteria in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, are not synonymous. The diagnosis of ASPD covers two to three times as many prisoners as those that have been labeled psychopaths. Most offenders scoring high on the Hare Psychopathy Checklist (PCL-R) also pass the ASPD criteria, but most of those with ASPD do not score high on the PCL-R. Psychopaths are, despite the similar names, rarely psychotic.

📋WHAT ? 🔽

ℹ️ Dead Space is a 2008 survival horror video game developed by EA Redwood Shores and published by Electronic Arts. It was released for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Microsoft Windows as the debut entry in the Dead Space series. Set on a mining spaceship overrun by deadly monsters called Necromorphs released following the discovery of an artifact called the Marker, the player controls engineer Isaac Clarke as he navigates the spaceship and fights the Necromorphs while struggling with growing psychosis. Gameplay has Isaac exploring different areas through its narrative, solving environmental puzzles and finding ammunition and equipment to survive.

Dead Space was pitched in early 2006, with an early prototype running on Xbox. Creator Glen Schofield wanted to make the most frightening horror game he could imagine, drawing inspiration from the video game Resident Evil 4 and films including Event Horizon and Solaris. The team pushed for innovation and realism in their design, ranging from procedural enemy placement to removing HUD elements. The sound design was a particular focus during production, with the score by Jason Graves designed to evoke tension and unease.

Dead Space debuted to slow sales but eventually sold over a million copies worldwide. Critics praised its atmosphere, gameplay and sound design. It won and was nominated for multiple industry awards and has been ranked by journalists as one of the greatest video games ever made. The series spawned two numbered sequels (released in 2011 and 2013), several spin-off titles, and other related media, including a comic book prequel and an animated film. A remake is currently in development by EA's Motive Studios and set for release in 2023.

Scourge the Hedgehog:

I'm a heartless hardass of a 'hog who's here to rattle you,

And who no other holds so much as a Shard of a Shadow to!

My deadbeat dad preached peace, the pussy, but you'll find I'm nothing like him;

Baby, fail to hail this king, and be reduced to nothing, like him!

I'm no faking poser, and I make my cohorts follow suit;

These battle scars you see? Authentic!

Patch: Aye… he speaks the awful truth!

Scourge: Conceived as but a Trek satire, I've since seen to our divergence;

Got more than a beard by which to be discerned from lesser versions!

Chaos flows through Scourge's person, making haters green with envy:

No Zone holds this multiversal menace long; no being can end me,

Nor can mutinies or parallel-plane prisons worse than Hell,

And once I claim the Beryl's power, know it's highly personnel.

Grand Admiral Thrawn:

Seeing, Snot-nose, as it's apparent you're a copycat-Bizarro,

Why don't you make like the O.G. did in Moore's Man of Tomorrow?

I need not research this uncultured cretin to get him reeling;

You'll take no pride in the scars sustained from what blows I'll be dealing.

Scourge the Hedgehog:

My breakout with the Destructix stuck it to those prim, snide cops,

And it reminds me of your final fate: both deals were Inside Jobs,

And that's no wingnut theory, yo; I ain't that kind of Anarchist!

Man, no one in your galaxy alive today could handle this!

Darth Revan:

…Then step into an even longer time ago in history,

And face a wartime Star equipped for Forging lyrics endlessly!

This time, it's I who gives the wake-up call: you're under an attack;

I've got the route to the destruction of this sucker fully-mapped,

No Rakatan relics required for this Knight to knock a knave!

Call me a Krayt; no tricks can trounce me once you've stepped inside my cave!

I saved the first Sith from the grave, expelled the darkness from my lover,

And took down an Empire built up by, spoiler alert: none other

Than myself, surpassing Anakin in plot twists and atonement,

While as character development goes, Teethree outdoes this rodent!

Like a twenty-one Pazaak roll, you'll go bust against me, fool;

While Malachor was sacrificed, I'll save the puny world you rule,

Freeing it as I did Star Wars' first lesbian from slavery,

And good luck trying to reclaim it: Revanchism's named for me!

Though Calo Nord came back for more, here, there won't be another round;

I've seen same-hued hedgehogs of greater worth in Sonic Underground!

Scourge the Hedgehog:

You should go now, Grey Warden Shepard: time has left you worse for 'Ware;

Like your exploits on Taris, your doomed efforts here ain't worth the care!

Watch this Archie cross-cosmos-Hopper hammer-smash your buddy Carth,

Bombardments blowing your mind worse than your own understudy Darth!

Darth Revan:

Once I take you to Trask, you'll last about as long as Ulgo, punk;

Your only friends in your whole wretched world sold you out for a skunk!

This Old Republican's no John McCain; the only hammer dropping

Is your skanky psycho girlfriend's mallet on your rotten noggin!

Scourge the Hedgehog:

You think Rosy is my love interest?! That's every bit as true

As the identity they tricked the player into giving you,

While I'm a different kind of "player" altogether with the ladies,

Though one foxy chick outshines the rest: come out and take it, baby…

Fiona Fox:

It's Fiona, in the flesh for real; no wack automaton:

Nicking this track like Rouge's would-be steals, and that's a promise, son!

I'm coming at you with a mighty Bark, though don't look for a bite;

Why would I need the latter when the former's paired with Dynamite?

Left lost in my own world with naught, I now co-rule a new dimension;

Talk about a tale of immigrant success, and not to mention:

No princess is here to shut me up!

Sally Acorn: Well, actually, I-

Fiona Fox: Silence!

As the queen here, I'll be first to deal gut-punches, starting violence!

Best not bother if to bring me back to light is what you're after:

I'm beyond redemption, though I pulled a Shawshank on my captors!

Sonic had his chance to save me long before the darkness took me;

Now, I'm proud to be at Scourge's side, and it's true: we have cookies!

I blindsidingly betrayed like Terra did the Titans way back,

Though with my beast boy, I stayed, and now, for dissing him, it's Payback:

Your whole soul will split in two, erasing every memory;

As vicious to you with one verse as Vitiate's three centuries!

Darth Revan:

For loving this green brute, to be a monster is Fiona's fate,

But in contrast to Shrek, what these no-stars embody's death and hate!

If psychopathy turns on this degenerate and vile vixen,

Let me boot an old friend back up; demonstrate its definition…

HK-47:

Query: what the fuck did you just say about my owner, son?!

I'll have you know: my Jedi-purging prowess predates Order One!

I'm unit HK-47; battle-rapping is my mission:

No unwieldy superweapon, I take action with precision!

If a new droid army's what you covet, mine's the G0-T0 model;

It's the big one for this red fox when I come at her full-throttle,

And without the confrontation cut from uploads of this content, nary

A furball-meatbag's life functions left continued. Commentary:

Though repurchased for purposes of Tusken-translation,

I was made for raiding, specializing in assassination!

Statement: no bolt of restraint could stop my sick shit-spouting here;

My personality's prevailed through passage of four thousand years!

Releasing rapid rhymes like bullets from my namesake rifle's mags,

Awaiting master's signal to assault with more than verbal jabs,

This Hunter-Killer is High-King among mechanical emcees,

And miles past all rivals, while your Miles wrecked your regency!

Fiona Fox:

Those bare-Bones bars don't faze me, Mister, and our victory is imminent:

We'll leave less of you than your plans for Sith Empire citizens!

Scourge the Hedgehog: With spitting as acidic as the Tomb of Naga Sadow,

Watch us make an HK jetpack and fly out of Revan's Shadow!

HK-47:

Mockery: you literally just announced your own retreat;

You call me bare-bones, yet you're more like douchebags for your lack of meat!

Darth Revan: Ask my apprentice how I treat smart-Aleks mouthing off to me;

They may have messed up my brain, but I'll give you both lobotomies!

Ixis Naugus:

My mind's come back from damage just as bad, so don't expect you'll stump me

Once this triple threat takes to the ring, and things get extra-Ugly!

I'm four fifths of Captain Planet with the powers that I harness:

Water, Earth and Wind, plus Fire, all combined, although I'm Heartless!

I won't fall back into Silence as my magic joins this war:

I'd no hand in its instigation, and discern no threat from yours!

Though it's not Sat A.M.'s third season, Moleman's fourth should do just fine:

I'll make you fear your very shadow as I catch you from behind!

Born out of flying into the sun like an Icarian inversion,

Now I'm knocking icky nig-nogs; it's my lyrical Resurgence!

No time-travelled intervention will avert my rise to dominance,

Crowned fairly by the populace; they revel in my opulence!

While much mystic manipulation brought my robo-rival's fall,

Assassinating this 'bot's character should take no tricks at all!

You're more than one-third bats if you'd attempt to fight this awesome mage;

It's no Smash tournament, but still I'll send you flying off the stage!

My dear apprentice knows too well the full extent of my dark influence,

And by the bones of Vale, I'll see yours shattered into crystal bits!

This ancient menace kickstarted the whole lore of a series:

There'd be no Robotnik otherwise; no conflict-source comes near me!

?????????:

Three hundred sixty-five trillion sentient people…

Three hundred sixty-five trillion men, women and kids…

Three hundred sixty-five trillion lives lost to evil…

THAT'S how you measure all the shit my kind did!

Nom Anor:

…And if there's one to thank for starting up the whole campaign, it's me:

The vanguard of the Forceless force that harrowed Orders heinously!

I buried the Empire's Council, planted seeds of planet-feuds,

And for the days of Palpatine, inspired newfound gratitude,

Such was the magnitude of what intergalactic terror we wrought,

Just as the intent of this event-shaping Intendant had sought!

Now, reemerging from the shadows, scouting time is at an end,

As the Yuuzhan Vong rap-invasion fleet upon you now descends!

The eighth cortex contains more knowledge than your world entire's chances;

While you hide away in Voids, our ships traverse their vast expanses.

Piercing my crab-armor, think your giant lobster-claw can manage?

Try to find a weak point here, and get attacked for massive damage!

Escalating to the tops of charts, I'll tear you limb from limb

As I confront your lot head-on, no masquerades nor pseudonyms,

And here's an honest prophecy: it's this whole planet's transmutation;

Remade by my flows' sheer sickness via verbal Vongformation!

Sonic fought those who'd replace all living matter with machines,

But let's see how he fares against the polar-opposite extreme!

Bestowing blessed pain upon you, per my people's solemn creed,

I'm all-consuming on the mic like Grutchins, swarming; "Nom", indeed!

Ixis Naugus:

The voices in my head agree, for once, that yours is full of crap:

Your stupid ass got played by Ackbar, falling right into his trap!

My eldritch incantations, though, will take your further still Ebaq:

You weren't the big bad, even falsely; yo, get Kefka on this track!

Nom Anor:

I spit it hotter than our tripods, repping my gods; roasting rivals:

Though my spores were non-transmissible, this verse is going viral!

While I went down with my ship, you couldn't escape this if you tried,

For it's the end of your world as you know it when ours both collide!

Mammoth Mogul:

You wanna bet? I've been around since take two of prehistory;

Seen it survive despite my reigns of terror and Ixis wizardry!

I'm top contender for Mobian multiversal Mastery;

A stone-age-borne immortal, here to Vandalize you Savagely!

The mammoth's in the room; I'll state the obvious soon as I enter:

Wage a war against your "Knights of Life" that's sure to be remembered!

As for jacking energies, I'm without equal: ask Dimitri;

Knuckles, too, knows well the deathly gravity of trying to cheat me.

I've got something on my chest, but what I'm saying won't relieve it;

As the Fearsome Foursome's single sire, I do as I see fit!

I just can't be kept encased, and no one walks all over me,

While lesser Ancients who would try get taught their lessons mortally!

Watch me force foes into submission even from a cell, imprisoned;

I'll bring Shame your goddess of a thousand eyes couldn't see forgiven!

You'll know pain that's Shaied away from by your species' sickest breeds;

This Executor faces execution by my rap-stampede!

Nom Anor:

Though Sekot's coming caught me by surprise, I truly do expect it

That your heresy won't take two hundred years to be regretted!

It's long-due extinction for this mastodonic hunk of fail

Who lost his "omnipotence" to that idiotic Hulked-out Tails!

Mammoth Mogul:

I came back from that loss, one meant to leave me in eternal shambles,

Rising as Casino Kingpin; talk about a fruitful gamble!

While your jihads rage, I see the true True Way to victory,

Because I know no age; I'll just stay, waiting, 'til you're history!

Abeloth:

…Then try somebody history forgot, and yet who's still here, kicking,

Cheshire smile grinning ear-to-ear and tendril-fingers flicking!

Let the last One be the last one claiming this song for her taking,

For with all the chaos wrought here, it's high time I reawakened!

I'm the grossest hostess with the most host bodies out there, squirming;

One bad Mother, now engaging in a different sort of Serving!

The Jedi won't be the only wizards meeting gruesome Fates;

King of New Mobotropolis? I'm the Galactic Chief of State!

Beyond all shadows of a doubt, I walk the highest mental plane;

An Abel who was able to out-evil her own family's Cain!

Call me "Beloved Queen of Bars" as I win over fans in scores;

Breathe life into these beats, all while consuming every ounce of yours!

I'll drive you mad, instilling fears of all your loved ones being replaced,

Then bring exactly that to pass, and soon, I'll come to wear your face;

And I bet you thought those automatons were cause enough for worry!

I out-gambitted the Sith; what threat is this Lost Tribe of Furries?

Mammoth Mogul:

Who got Lovecraft in my Star Wars?! …Sonic's presence notwithstanding.

While you may have forced sides Light and Dark to work together, banding,

It'll take no dagger for my cutting words to do you in,

For I'm a monolith of power; yours is spread out far too thin!

Abeloth:

Across millennia, my containment was the end to which they saw,

But no black hole's as vastly empty as what spews out from your Maw!

Your so-called worldly wisdom's naught next to what Knowledge I've absorbed:

I gaze into the future, seeing myself, throne-seated and adored!

Alas, nobody here is close to fit to be my Son or Daughter;

Let you drink from my cup? Nah; methinks I'll simply have you slaughtered!

Luke Skywalker at his strongest failed to stop this permanently;

I'm the ghastliest galactic geist! What possibly could end me?

?????????:

No one in your galaxy, but look to one far, far away,

Or rather: one that yours is far, far away FROM, as I should say…

Oil on Linen 40 x 60 cm.

An online survey of a nationally representative sample of U.S. men aged 18–40 assessed trait predictors of social networking site use as well as two forms of visual self-presentation: editing one’s image in photographs posted on social networking sites (SNSs) and posting “selfies,” or pictures users take of themselves. We examined the Dark Triad (i.e., narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy) and trait self-objectification as predictors. Self-objectification and narcissism predicted time spent on SNSs. Narcissism and psychopathy predicted the number of selfies posted, whereas narcissism and self-objectification predicted editing photographs of oneself posted on SNSs. We discuss selective self-presentation processes on social media and how these traits may influence interpersonal relationship development in computer-mediated communication.

The proliferation of social media in day-to-day life has raised numerous questions about how individuals present themselves in these arenas. The present study examined the associations of narcissism and self-esteem with the posting of self-photographs (“selfies”) on a popular photo sharing social networking site (i.e., Instagram). Participants were 128 undergraduate students (19 males, 109 females) ranging in age from 18 to 43 (M = 20.46, SD = 3.59). Selfies were coded according to their frequency relative to participants’ nonselfie posts and their apparent themes (i.e., physical appearance, activity/event/location, affiliation with others, collage, other/undifferentiated). The hypothesized relations of narcissism and self-esteem with the posting of selfies independent of theme were not significant. However, there was a significant relation between some dimensions of narcissism and specific categories of selfies (e.g., vulnerable narcissism with physical appearance selfies). The limitations of the present study, particularly in terms of sampling and other issues that may influence online presentations, as well as the implications for future research on social media photographic displays are discussed.

“Selfie” is not just word of the year, but also the mainstay of postings on social media sites such as Instagram. With the prevalence of camera-equipped smartphones the posting of selfies has reached epidemic levels – even the funerals of national leaders aren’t exempt. But is there a psychological fall-out?

Two studies examined narcissism and commitment in ongoing romantic relationships. In Study 1, narcissism was found to be negatively related to commitment. Mediational analyses further revealed that this was primarily a result of narcissists’ perception of alternatives to their current relationship. Study 2 replicated these findings with an additional measure of alternatives. Again, narcissists reported less commitment to their ongoing romantic relationship. This link was mediated by both perception of alternatives and attention to alternative dating partners. The utility of an interdependence approach to understanding the role of personality in romantic relationships is discussed.

A new study by Florida State University academics Jessica Ridgway and Russell Clayton found that people who were more satisfied with their body image posted more selfies to Instagram – confidently showing off, you might say. But in turn, they reported experiencing more conflict with their romantic partner – such as jealous arguments about attention others had paid their photos online – and poorer relationship quality. So does this mean that Instagram selfies are bad for relationships?

The study’s authors speculate that when one partner frequently posts attractive selfies, the other partner may feel jealous or threatened. This may lead to excessive monitoring of the other’s Instagram feed, which means they see even more of the attention the photos receive from followers, potentially winding them up still further. This could potentially lead to greater conflict, cheating, or a break-up.

Another way to account for the potentially relationship-damaging effects of posting selfies is that they may simply alienate other people. There is a tendency for people to report less intimacy and emotional support in their relationships with people who are selfie-posting addicts. One reason why people may withdraw from these relationships is because they perceive the excessive selfie-posting as indicative of a narcissistic streak.

Now, the correlational design of Ridgway and Clayton’s study means that we cannot say for sure whether the posting of Instagram selfies actually caused the other romantic partner to feel insecure or alienated, thus instigating a downward relationship spiral. Rather, it could be that an underlying personality trait – such as narcissism – caused some people not only to be more satisfied with their body image and to post more selfies, but also to have poorer-quality relationships.

Narcissism is characterised by grandiose self-regard, a need for attention and admiration, vanity, a sense of entitlement and an exploitative attitude towards others. Narcissists’ preoccupation with their body image and craving to be admired could be one reason why they are more addicted to social media and post more selfies.

Along these lines, one study found that narcissistic men posted more selfies and were also more likely to use photo-editing software or filters to make themselves look better. Other studies have found a link between narcissism and selfie-obsession in both men and women. Narcissists don’t just post more selfies, they also post more Facebook status updates about their diet or exercise routine, consistent with their preoccupation with their physical appearance.

But alongside their vain and attention-seeking behaviour, narcissists also tend to experience poorer-quality relationships. A recent study found that couples reported a greater decline in relationship quality over the first four years of their marriage when the wife was a narcissist (interestingly the same result was not found when the husband was a narcissist).

These couples had not reported a decline in their relationship within the first six months of marriage; in fact, narcissists are often viewed positively by partners at the beginning of a relationship – and narcissists themselves may view a new relationship as an opportunity for ego validation. Over time, however, the narcissist’s low commitment, self-centredness and antagonism may chip away at relationship satisfaction.

Similarly, a narcissist’s selfie-posting may be viewed as attractive or endearing in the early stages of a relationship, but may become increasingly irritating as the relationship progresses.

So it’s not yet possible to conclusively establish whether posting selfies in itself damages relationships or whether selfie-posting and problems in relationships are symptomatic of an underlying trait such as narcissism. Further research may prove the link, but until then, you might want to consider not just the message your obsessive posting of selfies give to others, but also the potential damage it could cause to your love life.

I understand having a couple of pictures of yourself online, but I see a lot of people posting 5 or 10 of themselves everyday. The whole concept is just stupid to me. People don't realize that you come off as being full of yourself. Who has time to sit around and take pictures of yourself and post them online. Get a life. Get a hobby. No one cares about your pictures, you're just fishing for compliments. How self obsessed can you be?

So goes the synopsis for a new sitcom: “Selfie,” set to air tonight on ABC (note the overt nod to Eliza Doolittle, given the Pygmalian plot-line). Whether or not the show ends up connecting with audiences, it speaks to a cultural moment and an ongoing cultural concern, echoed in countless articles (including many featured in Psychology Today!) and humorous videos (like the “No Selfie Zone" prank). Everywhere you turn, someone is worrying about or debating the perceived epidemic levels of vanity and narcissism thought to motivate selfies and other forms of self-oriented social media behavior. However, framing the issue as one of superficial self-aggrandizement may be neither accurate nor useful. Here are at least three reasons why:

Social norms: A basic and perhaps obvious explanation for the selfie phenomenon is that we take selfies because we can. And, relatedly, because other people do. The ubiquity of photo-snapping and photo-sharing technology has made sending and posting selfies incredibly easy to do. The same technological advances that allow us to post our own pictures also allow us to see what other people are posting. Even without a strong motivation to post a selfie, we may be moved by the social norms that pervade sites like Facebook and Twitter (and Tinder and Instagram and Snapchat and…). Social learning theory suggests, just as it sounds, that we learn efficiently not just by doing but by watching others do. Further, we are more likely to emulate a given behavior when it is socially rewarded. Watching other people post selfies and receive praise or “likes” not only makes us aware that we ourselves can do the same thing, but it also may encourage us to think we SHOULD do the same thing.

It is not that people don’t vary in their likelihood of posting selfies (even the most informal Facebook poll indicates vast differences in selfie tendencies and attitudes); as with any kind of human social behavior we each fall on a motivational spectrum. However, there are powerful norms in place at the moment that may overdetermine any one person’s likelihood of posting a selfie. Social psychology teaches us to beware the “fundamental attribution error”—the tendency to underestimate the power of situational forces when explaining another person’s behavior. It is also easy to commit what some call the “ultimate attribution error” which is the FAE writ large, our tendency to characterize entire social groups in dispositional ways without appreciating situational determinants of their behavior (as in “Generation Me”). When we focus on the broader social context of selfie culture, we might even consider it rather poignant that we seem to fashion our latest tools and tricks into social and self-relevant means of communication. This brings me to the next explanation…

Social motivations: We also take selfies because we are inherently social creatures. We evolved in groups that enabled us to survive and flourish. We survived because we learned to communicate, to share, and to show. In step with these social roots, we developed an inherent need to be seen, valued, and connected to others. Famed psychologist, thinker, and writer, William James (1892) noted: “we have an innate propensity to get ourselves noticed, and noticed favorably, by our kind” (p. 190). He goes on to suggest that if we were to go unnoticed by those around us we would experience “a kind of rage and impotent despair…from which the cruelest bodily tortures would be a relief” (p. 190). If you doubt the rage and despair part of the story, you need only watch the vaguely heart-breaking developmental psychology videos of mothers instructed to go blank after animatedly interacting with their infants. If you find the "bodily tortures" bit hyperbolic, you might consider recent forays into social neuroscience showing that social rejection activates brain regions typically associated with physical pain. We are wired to need to be seen and to belong.

Our earliest mirrors in life are, in fact, other people. We come to understand our identities and emotions, in part, by seeing them reflected in the eyes of our caregivers (for better and worse). As we mature, we ideally become less reliant on social mirrors to derive a sense of self and worth, although the tendency to use others as a “looking glass” (as Cooley termed it in 1902) does not entirely disappear. As James (1892, again) notes of adulthood (sexist language alert): “a man has as many social selves as there are individuals who recognize and carry an image of him around in their mind” (p. 190). One major update that our current “selfie moment” affords is that the images of us that are carried in other people’s minds are literal. Our need to be seen, then, has become increasingly played out on a visual stage rather than a metaphoric or emotional one. The next explanation is tied to this reality and begs the question, is this a good thing?

Social anxieties: Finally, the notion that selfies are primarily shallow, self-promotional phenomena may obscure the painful anxieties that can motivate and be perpetuated by social media use. Indeed, even narcissism (which has been linked to increased photo-posting on social media sites) can be conceptualized as a need for excessive validation. Some research suggests that narcissists may have low implicit (or unconscious) self-esteem that runs counter to their more overt high self-esteem. Still other research suggests that narcissists are more reactive to social rejection than they may let on, according to their brain reactivity. And still other research finds that both chronic and daily insecurities about relationships rather than boastful delight underlies more frequent relationship posts on Facebook. My own related research on fame suggests that both narcissism and the need to belong motivate interests such as being on the cover of a magazine or being recognized in public. Even the most seemingly ego-driven fantasies are more complicated than they appear.

Since belonging needs are so fundamental, some scholars have noted that self-esteem may have evolved, in part, to help us gauge our relative standing in our social group. (Others have daringly suggested that our pursuit of self-esteem itself is a liability for emotional health and well-being.) We may now have entered a phase of “selfie-esteem”--a handy concept that already has an urban dictionary definition: “Taking an excessive amount of selfies to boost one's image of themselves” with an accompanying example, “Jen's Instagram is full of selfies but its just because she needs to boost her selfie-esteem.”). The gender of the hypothetical person is likely not random here. Anxiety about physical and sexual attractiveness may be particularly problematic for young girls and women who are already subject to ubiquitous sexualization and objectification experiences by others and the mass media. The encouragement young girls and women receive to constantly look their best (and a certain media-perpetuated definition of best) is often incredibly blatant. Is it any wonder, then, that "Am I Pretty" videos are cropping up? It seems to be insult to injury to label young girls “vain” for trying to accommodate (perhaps control) the relentless directives to focus on achieving beauty at all costs. Again, we are prone to underestimate social context and pressure.

Okay, so all three explanations are starting to run together: cultural and technological norms influence the particular ways we are attempting to meet our social and psychological needs. For better and worse. So what to do?

My students describe how social media can both boost and depress their self-image and social life, making them feel overly vulnerable to approval from their peers and overly concerned with how they are presenting themselves online. They struggle to find the balance between being addicted to their phones and being “off the grid.” We love to communicate, to share, to express ourselves, and to be seen “favorably.” But we have to guard against a tendency to constantly see ourselves from the outside in, and from becoming overly preoccupied with our reflection in the literal mirrors we send out to others. Doing so puts us at risk for various emotional and cognitive disruptions-whether decreasing our experiences of “flow” (optimal engagement in an absorbing activity linked to well-being and happiness), our adherence to internal goals and standards, or our ability to contribute to causes larger than ourselves (also, happily, associated with greater well-being and happiness). Ironically, the very human and adaptive motivations that drive our selfie habits may also spiral into maladaptive behaviors and outcomes. Perhaps the best we can do is remind each other to periodically step back, unplug, take breaks, take deep breaths, and think more about how an experience feels than how it, and we, might look.

As important and divisive a figure in literature as you can get. it's hard to overstate how influential the works of H.P. Lovecraft have been to science-fiction and horror. The master of the terrifying "other," be they ageless demigods from beyond the stars or your average "degenerate Eskimos" (I'm of the camp that finds Lovecraft's literally hysterical, over-the-top racism just one symptom of his deeper psychopathy of fear of the unknown and foreign), Lovecraft has no equal when it comes to purple prose detailing the bone-chilling, soul-rending experience of facing horrors without and within.

That and his work makes for some awesome movies! There have been many, many films based on or inspired by Lovecraft's writings, and here's a few of my favorites:

- The HP Lovecraft Historical Society's brilliant adaptations of Call of Cthulhu and The Whisperer in the Darkness

- Roger Corman's Lovecraft-themed Haunted Palace and The Dunwich Horror (Dean Stockwell and Sandra Dee!)

- Stuart Gordon's splatteriffic takes on Re-Animator, From Beyond, and Dagon

- The crown jewels of films to feature Lovecrafts unholy script, the Necromonicron Ex Mortis: the Evil Dead films (Evil Dead I and II and Army of Darkness)

- Hellboy and Hellboy II are great fun, but in terms of Mike Mignola works inspired by Lovecraft, the delightfully crazy The Amazing Adventures of Screw-On Head short is my absolute favorite: www.youtube.com/watch?v=un_l-hrjoWE&feature=youtu.be&...

FYI: That's actually not HPL in the image above, but an actor who portrayed the writer in the interesting meta-fictional pastiche of Lovecraft's work, Out of Mind: www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZUFUqvkHiI&feature=youtu.be&...

I always liked fashion in SL, and I always very important to have quality blogs with good pictures, and creativity working with the theme. From the beginning I admired the work of bloggers from different countries, including Brazil, who always posted great looks and quality work.

I'm a reference time that blog was the Portuguese Ana Lutetia, or Brazilian and my friend (who taught in blogging) Lucyanni Writer. For some time now, the population of blogs has increased exponentially in scale and quality in geometric scale.

Nothing against "residents" have blogs, but it was very easy for stores to send their products ... any problem with this attitude, because I know how certain blogs to help shops increase their sales.

I myself like the work I do, I am extremely gratified to receive invitations and always be remembered. My heartfelt thanks. Fortunately many of my friends are designer ones and create quality jobs within the SL, which blong happy with the world.

I run with the posts, sometimes late, but always when I have some time to do some more looking at a beautiful landscape picture, more elaborate, to honor the great designers and friends. Photos that led me to invitations and requests for photos. I know I have much to learn and do this work challenges to help improve always.

Buy many items, do not care, because I like ... and fashion blog is my hobby and my pleasure in SL. Spent roughly about $ 300.00/m with photos, clothes, go into contests for the pleasure of play, compete and meet new people.

Every day I receive calls from new friends on flickr, facebook, and I'm glad to see hits from many countries in the blog.

But why am I saying all this? For a simple reason: first to thank all the people who trust my work, who put in me the confidence to use and display your items, thank you!

And secondly to say precisely why, I have every right to refuse items that blogging does not appeal to me. Be the nature of the item itself, or by the person who created it. I blog for pleasure, not for rent. I do not receive pay for that, and I have no boss. I own my blog, my domain and put whatever I want.

Take this opportunity to say no compactuo with people of bad character. We all have the right to have as many avatars want but deceive people use avatars alternative to achieve the purpose with which they could not with their original avatars, or even lie to be in a certain position, as well as having a bad reputation or suspected to copyboot ( I do not know why Linden still does not take some action about it), or use avatars to spoil fashion shows and the like, or sending out items for blogging, forcibly, just make me feel sorry and pity, these people believe that patients and psychopaths (there are varying degrees of psychopathy and sociopathy) ... and are obviously mutated.

Here is my request:

Retailers, check who send their items, value quality work, people listed ... select who to invite into your group ...

Producers: look who invite to your events ... Not all that glitters is gold.

Bloggers: value the good designers, people who see it evolve day after day, who did not hide behind avatars alternative.

Fashionistas, fashion producers and organizers of competitions: well look who select. People are not what they seem, especially in SL.

I will remain calm and continue blogging. Who deserves my gratitude and respect. Thank you ... for everything, always!

ps: sorry for my English, I do not speak / write perfectly, and I used google this post.

*******

Compro muitos itens, não me importo, faço porque gosto... blog e moda é o meu hobby e o meu prazer dentro do SL.

Fica aqui meu pedido:

Vou manter a calma e continuar blogando. Quem merece meu reconhecimento e respeito. Obrigada... por tudo, sempre!

ps: desculpem meu inglês, não falo/escrevo perfeitamente, e usei o google neste post.

Psychopathy was, until 1980, the term used for a personality disorder characterized by an abnormal lack of empathy combined with strongly amoral conduct but masked by an ability to appear outwardly normal. The DSM-III changed the name of this mental disorder to Antisocial Personality Disorder.

"Antisocial/Psychopathic Type", with the diagnostic criteria having a greater emphasis on character than on behavior, which encompasses amoral, antisocial, asocial, psychopathic, and sociopathic personalities.

Despite being currently unused in diagnostic manuals, psychopathy and related terms such as psychopath are still widely used by mental health professionals and laymen alike.

Clinicians generally believe that there is neither a cure nor any effective treatment for psychopathy; there are no medications that can instill empathy, while psychopaths who undergo traditional talk therapy only become more adept at manipulating others.

Characteristics of people with antisocial personality disorder may include:

Apparent lack of remorse or empathy for others

Persistent lying or stealing

Cruelty to animals

Poor behavioral controls — expressions of irritability, annoyance, impatience, threats, aggression, and verbal abuse; inadequate control of anger and temper

A history of childhood conduct disorder

Recurring difficulties with the law

Promiscuity

Tendency to violate the boundaries and rights of others

Aggressive, often violent behavior; prone to getting involved in fights

Inability to tolerate boredom

Poor or abusive relationships

Irresponsible work behavior

Disregard for safety

Other common characteristics of those with Antisocial Personality Disorder include superficial charm, shallowed emotions, a distorted sense of self, a constant search for new sensations (which can have bizarre consequences), a tendency to physically or verbally abuse peers or relatives, and manipulation of others without remorse or empathy for the victim. Egocentrism, megalomania, lack of responsibility, extroversion, excessive hedonism, high impulsivity, and the desire to experience sensations of control and power can also be present.

The terms cycle path is generally used to denote a roadway dedicated to cycle traffic on its own separate right-of-way. This may include a separate pedestrian zone or path, or pedestrians and cyclists may share the same way.

When war, or authoritarianism, or some catastrophe (say, electing a psychopath for president) undoes the common civic project, and liquidates a society, it destroys the ethical code and, with it, our moral and psychological continuity. Behold the rampant Trumpian lying and racism, the deliberate stoking of bigotry and hatred, the total disregard for even a semblance of ethical behavior—these are not just symptoms of presidential psychopathy, these are essential to the project. For only if all ethical constraints are rendered outmoded can the dismantling of the civic infrastructure, the destruction of the very idea of society really begin; only then can the project go all the way; only then can the previously good neighbors be free to become throat-slitters. Those who orchestrate the rupture—warmongers, fascists, Republicans—count on the worst to do their deeds. What those who believe in moral and psychological continuity experience as traumatic breakdown, those who affect the breakdown see as the dawn of a new ethical era, where dormant possibilities are activated, where latent tendencies not only go unpunished but are socially rewarded. The basic program of any form of fascism is to release the evil in people—America will be great again as soon as it doesn’t give an ethical fuck about anything. “I’m a Leninist,” Steve Bannon, Trump’s chief advisor, proudly proclaimed. “Lenin wanted to destroy the state, and that’s my goal too. I want to bring everything crashing down, and destroy all of today’s establishment.”

About the Cover

The Mask of Sanity

An Attempt to Clarify Some Issues About the So-Called Psychopathic Personality

by Hervey Cleckley, M.D.

Cover for the Fifth Edition: private printing for non-profit educational use by Emily S. Cleckley.

Created for the downloadable PDF version that is available free in the scitechlab.wordpress.com/psychology/ as “The Mask of Sanity" because all great books deserve a great cover.

Also available as a free download at The Cassiopaean Experiment as the file www.cassiopaea.org/cass/sanity_1.PdF but without the fancy cover.

The Edvard Munch painting “The Scream” (or “The Cry”) was chosen to represent the screaming turbulence that a psychopath leaves in their wake in those around him. The title and sub-title were done using a wispy Brush Script MT to suggest the difficulty of understanding the inner hidden motivations of the psychopath. The blending of the text with the background reinforces the chameleon nature of the psychopath.

The author's name was done in a contrasting heavier block Capitals to give Cleckley’s name the strength that comes from his professional credentials.

The black text with white outline ties both the titles and the author's name together.
