He's always there. In the shadows, in her thoughts, in her nightmares. The Candy Man loves, he hates, he takes, he destroys, he rescues. He's the beast that comes to her in the middle of the sunny day and he's the savior who holds her up in her darkest hour. His intoxicating sweets run through her veins, they rush into her lungs clouding her mind enough to save her from the terrors that hold her captive. He's the Candy Man and the Candy Man is always there.

El Foro Ronamo - Roma - Italia

de/from Wikipedia

The Roman Forum - Rome - Italy

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_Forum

The Roman Forum (in Latin, Forum Romanum, although the Romans referred to it commonly as Forum Magnum or simply Forum) was the forum of the city of Rome, that is, the central zone - similar to the central squares in modern cities - where the government, market and religious institutions are located. As today, it was where commerce, business, prostitution, religion, and the administration of justice took place. It stood the communal home.

Series of pavement remnants show that sediments eroded from the surrounding hills were already raising the level of the forum in the early days of the Republic. Originally it had been a swampy terrain, that was drained by the Tarquinios by means of the Maximum Sewer. Its definitive travertine pavement, which can still be seen, dates from the reign of Caesar Augustus.

Today it is famous for its remains, which eloquently show the use of urban spaces during the Roman Empire.

The Roman Forum includes the following important ancient monuments, buildings and ruins:

Temple of Castor and Pollux

Temple of Romulus

Temple of Saturn

Temple of Vesta

House of the Vestals

Temple of Venus and Rome

Temple of Caesar

Basilica Emilia

Basilica Julia

Arch of Septimius Severus

Arch of Titus

This historic Treasure Coast home was turned into a visitors center in downtown Ft. Pierce. The structure was built in 1905.

In 1943 the House of Seven Gables was turned into a house of prostitution and was frequented by servicemen during WWII.

In 1987 it was sold at auction and used as a taxidermy studio. In 1997 the house was donated to the city of Fort Pierce and moved to its present location on June 31, 1998.

In 2000 the St. Lucie Chamber of Commerce opened the house as a visitor's center providing information about things to do in the area and places to stay and eat at. The volunteers who work here answer visitors questions and also give free tours of the house. If you are in the area it is worth a stop especially since the A. E. Backus Museum and Gallery and Manatee Observation and Education Center are located on either side of the House of Seven Gables.

Nyhavn is a canal in the center of Copenhagen whose name means "new port" in Danish. It is characterized by the bright colors of the houses that border it.

The construction of Nyhavn was ordered by King Christian V and lasted from 1671 to 1673. The canal was dug by Swedish prisoners of war from the Danish-Swedish war from 1658 to 1660. This was to establish a link between the sea and the Kongens Nytorv (Royal Square), inside the city. Cargo ships are moored there and the catches of fishermen are landed there, while merchants build their houses along the canal. The port was then known for its drinking establishments, the sailors who frequented it and the prostitution that was practiced there.

We toured the city and historic Creek Street. It's one of the most popular things to see in Ketchikan. The antique boardwalk on wooden pilings over Ketchikan Creek is home to restaurants, unique curio shops.

The History of Creek Street can be summed up by fishermen, bootleggers, & prostitutes. Creek Street is known as Ketchikan’s old red-light district. In the mid 1920’s there were over 20 bawdy houses on Creek Street alone. Creek Street was once home to Ketchikan’s #1 industry – prostitution. The prostitutes were frequented by men looking for a little company and some liquor.

During prohibition, Creek Street was the place to go for a drink as bootleggers would smuggle in Canadian whiskey to supply the houses of prostitution and backroom saloons. Creek Street is built over the water and the bootleggers would simply wait until high tide and would row their rowboats right up the stream to deliver their goods in the cloak of darkness. Most of the houses on Creek Street had hidden trap doors underneath the house just to receive delivery.

Going upriver the Mekong River, we left Vietnam to enter Cambodia.

Phnom Penh is its Capital.

The recent history of this country is really cruel.

During the Genocide carried out by Khmer Rouge, there was a mass extermination of civilians, which reduced the population of Cambodia from 7.5 to 6 million.

In fact, the conflict ended recently. It was not until Pol Pot's death in 1998 that the remaining Khmer Rouge surrendered.

Currently, this country is in reconstruction of everything destroyed both material and non-material. Its population, the great majority under 30, lives and works with enthusiasm to raise it. Nonetheless, there are still topics such as prostitution of minors, a fact evident in the Capital between tourists and adolescent girls.

From the 1920's and throughout the prohibition years and later, a certain individual named Salvatore Facciacattiva, aka "Sally Southside," ran the rackets in Chicago's South side. All illegal operations whether it was prostitution, drugs, gambling, loan sharking, or bootlegging were run and controlled by him, and control he did. If you happened to have stepped out of line you only did that once. There were no second chances with Sal. I can't say ask the few who tried because they are no longer reachable to ask.

As a young man Sal was a WWI conscript and spent a few months fighting in Europe but all that ended for him when a German mortar round landed within feet of where he was positioned. The shrapnel tore into him badly and his face was permanently scarred from it. By the time he was able to leave the military hospital the war had concluded. He already was a tough street fighter, and his time spent in the military made him even tougher and meaner!

But, in spite of the life he had chosen Sal was Catholic, and he attended 11 o'clock mass at St Barnabas Church every Sunday. You would see his shiny Cadillac sedan parked in the first spot next to the side door of the church. Everyone knew that that was Sal's parking spot, and no one dared park in it on Sunday mornings. And when inside the church he would sit at the end of the pew right next to that side door in case he had to leave in a hurry for "business reasons!" And, like the parking spot, everyone knew that that was Sal's seat, and no one dared sit in it!

It was alleged that Sal had orchestrated the St Valentine's Day massacre where 7 member associates of Chicago's Northside gang were brutally machine gunned and murdered in 1929. Although the police had brought him in for questioning they had no proof that they could link him directly to the crime, and let's say the police "accommodated" him and released him.

Northside revenge did come, but it was in 1938. and nearly ten years after the massacre had occurred on St Valentine's Day. At 2 AM in the morning, on June 12th, Sal was leaving one of his favorite clubs with a female acquaintance when a black sedan rushed by, shots rang out, and both he and she were gunned down and perished from their wounds.

I hope you weren't hoping for a happy ending!

Taken on a very wet and chilly guided tour of the new Kings Cross Central development area in London last Saturday. At the height of summer :-)

A bit of history from Wikipedia:

"The two Victorian coal drops sheds were used to receive coal from South Yorkshire and trans-ship it to narrowboats on the Regents Canal and to horse-drawn carts;[3] they processed 8m tonnes a year.[4] Coal was the only form of energy available to heat and light the buildings of London, either directly or after having been converted to coal gas in the adjacent gas works. Coal use was challenged by electricity, and electricity prevailed – the coal drops were redundant and fell into decay. They were used as warehouse units; one was gutted by fire in 1985[5] and another used by Bagley's nightclub,[6] which closed in 2007. The night clubs complemented a vibrant night life of easy drug access, raves and prostitution."

As ocean-going ships grew larger, Nyhavn was taken over by internal Danish small vessel freight traffic. After World War II land transport took over this role and small vessel traffic disappeared from the Port of Copenhagen, leaving Nyhavn largely deserted of ships.

In the mid-1960s, the Nyhavn Society (Danish: Nyhavnsforeningen) was founded with the aim of revitalising the area. In 1977, Nyhavn was inaugurated as a veteran ship and museum harbour by Copenhagen’s Lord Mayor Egon Weidekamp. In 1980 Nyhavn quay was pedestrianised; it had been used as a parking area in the previous years which had coincided with a dwindling of harbour activities. Since then it has become a popular spot for tourists and locals alike, serving the function of a square according to architects Jan Gehl and Lars Gemzøe.

Demons that combat us by the force of the brutal grotesque of the truth are those who teach us to embrace the virtue of ‘beasthood’, to exploit the shadow, to restore…

Deadwood, South Dakota. What a rich history! This town was where the Dakota Territory Gold Rush began in 1874. It became a pioneer destination of wagons bound for the West looking to find their fortune.

It was called a lawless town where gunfighters ruled, gangs rode in and prostitution flourished.

It's where Wild Bill Hickok is buried; killed in a poker game at Saloon Number 10 with the famous "Deadman's Hand."

It was a mecca for gold processing with the Homestake Slime Plant which operated until 1973 and is now a hotel.

The town has survived at least four major fires and at the time my significant other grew up there, it was a peaceful, family-oriented small town with a modest downtown area. Over the years the town saw massive decline until in 1988, South Dakota passed a law making it the third legal gambling destination in the U.S. (after Nevada and Atlantic City). It's ironic that people are still chasing their fortune in Deadwood.

I took this photo from the street behind where Ron grew up, after looking down on the flat roof that he hauled his telescope onto as a young boy.

He named one of the asteroids he discovered after this town where his passion for astronomy started. Its official designation is Asteroid 123794 Deadwood.

Ketchikan's Most Famous Brothel - Dolly's House Museum

DOLLY'S HOUSE

HISTORIC RED LIGHT TOUR

WHERE BOTH MEN & SALMON

CAME UPSTREAM TO SPAWN

24 CREEK STREET EST. 1919

Dolly Arthur bought this house for $800 and worked as a madam here until she was 72. Prostitution was illegal on land so they built Creek Street on stilts. It is $10 per person to tour this house. They have plaques and TVs in every room telling her story instead of a guided tour. The house itself is nothing extraordinary (except maybe for the shower curtain - condoms were embroidered into flowers), but it is still an interesting part of Ketchikan's history.

Single young men in Alaska had a different idea of after-work entertainment - hard liquor and a certain type of female companionship. These loggers, miners and fishermen worked hard in the woods, the gold camps or at sea. When they got back to town, Creek Street and its brothels were waiting.

As per online information.

Thank-you for all the overwhelming support and many friendships.

As ocean-going ships grew larger, Nyhavn was taken over by internal Danish small vessel freight traffic. After World War II land transport took over this role and small vessel traffic disappeared from the Port of Copenhagen, leaving Nyhavn largely deserted of ships.

In the mid-1960s, the Nyhavnsforeningen (Nyhavn Society) was founded with the aim of revitalising the area. Since then, it has become a popular spot for tourists and locals alike, serving the function of a square according to architects Jan Gehl and Lars Gemzøe.

The Quartieri Spagnoli (in Spanish, Spanish Neighborhoods) are located in the historic center of Naples, Italy, and are made up of the San Ferdinando, Avvocata and Montecalvario neighborhoods. The neighborhood emerged around the 16th century, during the Spanish domination of Naples, with the aim of hosting the Spanish military garrisons destined to the repression of possible revolts of the Neapolitan population, or as a temporary residence for those who passed through the city in the direction of other places of conflict. Since its inception, they have become a place with a bad reputation, due to the abundant prostitution and criminality related to the continuous search for "fun" by Spanish soldiers.

Despite its reputation, the neighborhood constitutes a nucleus of major historical-artistic relevance of the city of Naples, offering different features of popular culture and the Neapolitan lifestyle, such as, for example, the presence of small artisan shops, Neapolitan bassi, or small, dark alleys characterized by high stairs and clothes hanging between the buildings.

Regno Unito, Londra, Oxford Street, Autunno 2021

Oxford Street is a major road in the City of Westminster, in the West End of London, United Kingdom. It is Europe's busiest shopping street, with around half a million daily visitors, and as of 2012 had approximately 300 shops. The road was originally a Roman road, part of the Via Trinobantina between Essex and Hampshire via London. It was known as Tyburn Road through the Middle Ages and was once notorious as a street where prisoners from Newgate Prison would be transported towards a public hanging. It became known as Oxford Road and then Oxford Street in the 18th century, and began to change character from a residential street to commercial and retail purposes by the late 19th century, also attracting street traders, confidence tricksters and prostitution. The first department stores in Britain opened on Oxford Street in the early 20th century, including Selfridges, John Lewis and HMV. The street suffered heavy bombing during World War II, and several longstanding stores including John Lewis were completely destroyed and rebuilt from scratch.

Excerpt from Wikipedia:

Born in Brooklyn, New York to Italian immigrants, Capone became involved with gang activity at a young age after being expelled from school at age 14. In his early twenties, he moved to Chicago to take advantage of a new opportunity to make money smuggling illegal alcoholic beverages into the city during Prohibition. He also engaged in various other criminal activities, including bribery of government figures and prostitution. Despite his illegitimate occupation, Capone became a highly visible public figure. He made various charitable endeavors using the money he made from his activities, and was viewed by many to be a "modern-day Robin Hood".

Nyhavn is a 17th-century waterfront, canal and entertainment district in Copenhagen, Denmark. Stretching from Kongens Nytorv to the Inner Harbour just south of the Royal Playhouse, it is lined by brightly coloured 17th and early 18th century townhouses and bars, cafes and restaurants. The canal harbours many historical wooden ships.

Nyhavn was constructed by King Christian V from 1670 to 1675, dug by Danish soldiers and Swedish prisoners of war from the Dano-Swedish War 1658–1660. It is a gateway from the sea to the old inner city at Kongens Nytorv (King's Square), where ships handled cargo and fishermens' catch. It was notorious for beer, sailors, and prostitution. Danish author Hans Christian Andersen lived at Nyhavn for 18 years.

The first bridge across Nyhavn opened on 1874. It was a temporary wooden footbridge. It was replaced by the current bridge in 1912.

The northern side of Nyhavn is lined by brightly coloured townhouses built with wood, bricks, and plaster. The oldest house, at No. 9, dates from 1681.

Between 1845 and 1864, Hans Christian Andersen lived at No. 67, where a memorial plaque now stands. From 1871 to 1875 Andersen lived at Nyhavn 18, which currently houses an Andersen-themed souvenir shop.

First I did it to please myself, then I did it to please my friends, and eventually I did it for the money :-)

Getsemani Neighborhood.

Like all great emerging spots, the neighborhood of Getsemani has a storied and complicated past. But times change and old stereotypes die hard. The burgeoning barrio, just outside the fabled walls of Cartagena's historic Old City, was formerly a haven of prostitution and drugs. But the once-seedy neighborhood is now the coolest, most invigorating and authentic, up-and-coming talk of the town.

Getsemani shares the Old Walled City of Cartagena's bright Caribbean colors, narrow streets, and friendly locals. The blocks are lined with beautiful graffiti by a slew of artists, cats soaking in windowsill sunshine, and friendly domino and chess games.

Bazaar in Saigon

Saigon (Vietnam) - One of the last photos taken this morning, in the small Tan Binh market in District 1 of Ho Chi Minh City. A neighborhood known as the "backpacker district." If this is what the backpacker atmosphere is like, it has changed a lot since the 1970s. In reality, this area is now dedicated to prostitution.

We will depart for Paris at dawn tomorrow. Flight time: 12 hours.

I'll continue shots from a walk in Copenhagen early in May.

Here we are in Nyhavn.

Today Nyhavn is a popular venue and attraction for tourists and locals

The seaside and harbour front venue around Nyhavn - is a part of Copenhagen’s cultural soul - and has become one of the most visited historic places in town - which has gain tremendous popularity - as a genuine tourist attraction - that hold a magnetic appeal for curious and joyful visitors.

Dean's Yard, Westminster, comprises most of the remaining precincts of the historically greater scope of the monastery or abbey of Westminster, not occupied by its buildings. It is known to members of Westminster School as Green (referred to without an article). It is a large gated quadrangle, closed to public traffic, chiefly a green upon which the pupils have the long-use acquired exclusive rights to sit, read and to play games such as football (they have some claim to have invented the modern game). For some centuries until a point in the early seventeenth century it was a third of its present size, since to the south stood the Queen's Scholars' dormitory, which was in monastic times the granary. Its stones support Church House.

Adjoining buildings

East: school buildings

South: Church House, a conference centre and offices of the Church of England

West: school buildings and Westminster Abbey Choir School

North: flanking archway to the Great Sanctuary: Abbey offices and part of the Deanery.

Historically the Abbey was one of the last ecclesiastical sanctuaries to surrender ancient rights such as sanctuary. Over centuries, residents included many politically disfavoured and dangerous inhabitants. They were held in check by the Abbot's own penal jurisdiction, and by the knowledge that the Abbot could instantly expel them to meet their fate at the hands of common law. The Abbey Gatehouse was split into two prisons: one belonging to the Abbot and one for the constables outside. Westminster School displays a royal pardon from Charles II of England and Scotland to the King's Scholars, whose actions killed a bailiff harassing the mistress of one of them in Dean's Yard, accused by his fellow authorities of murder. Whether he was excused for reacting to the breach of some vestigial sanctuary, in stark contrast to the English Commonwealth where such rights were undeniably defunct, or for a moderate degree of violence that may have been used, such as might have resulted in a manslaughter charge were the victim not a bailiff, is unrecorded. The Abbey's Sanctuary extended beyond, as far as the north side of Parliament Square to a short approach, Thieving Lane, through which thieves were taken to the prison (see Richard II's gatehouse, Old Palace Yard) without entering sanctuary and being able to claim its immunity, but in the tenements of which prostitution took hold. HM Treasury is built upon its site, leading to accusations that thieving still continues there, especially at times of higher taxation or departmental cuts

Yeah, now it’s my turn. Screw Trump and Biden! I’m taking over now! With me as president we will have public healthcare for all, legalized marijuana, gay clubs in all towns and cities with more than 10.000 inhabitants, legalized prostitution, reduced taxes on alcohol, reduced taxes on cigarettes, working days reduced to Tuesday – Thursday, weekend from Friday to Monday and the normal day will be extended from 24 hours to 30 hours so that people get more time to do their shit.

With a town once famous for bootlegging, prostitution, organized crime, racial injustice, murder, lynchings, KKK activities, and violence, this small town newspaper has had a lot to report over the years. Indeed, I doubt any town in Illinois has had as much infamous news to report as this one over the course of it’s existence. Farewell. There’s nothing to say now.

Old Corinth - It is known from archaeological sites and remains of the Doric temple of Apollo, erected about 540 BC.

Stayed twice at Corinth St. Paul in his missionary journeys to Greece and Asia Minor;

- 50-52, the second missionary journey - taught here for one and a half years and founded the Christian commune.

- 53-58, the third missionary journey

Above the ruins of Corinth rises inaccessible fortress Acrocorinth, on which there was in antiquity the world-famous Greek temple of Aphrodite, known as the place of sacred prostitution.

-

W Koryncie przebywał dwukrotnie św. Paweł podczas swych podróży misyjnych do Grecji i Azji Mniejszej;
