During the Experimental Warning Program (EWP) Spring Experiment, recently developed experimental products are evaluated by National Weather Service (NWS) forecasters with a focus on improving the detection and prediction of severe weather hazards, such as tornadoes and large hail. These products are used alongside their standard suite of products to provide both experimental short term severe weather forecasts and severe thunderstorm / tornado warnings. The experimental products are associated with the next generation of weather observing satellites and improvements to existing weather radar systems.The focus of this experiment is to evaluate the products and capabilities of the satellites and radars in a real time environment that allows experiment participants to provide constructive feedback. This information will be used to optimize these products and capabilities so that they can be deployed operationally for future use by forecasters in the local forecast offices. The Spring Experiment also gives an opportunity for researchers to become immersed in an operational environment and see the challenges and needs of forecasters in the field.

During a Native American history-themed sleepover at the National Archives in Washington, DC, 101 kids and their grown-ups spent the night enjoying history-related activities, learning from special guests actor Martin Sensmeier, Jim Thorpe historians Bob Wheeler and Flo Ridlon, and Native American storyteller Perry Ground. After sleeping over night in the Rotunda, participants enjoyed a pancake breakfast made by the Archivist of the United States, David S. Ferriero, on October 14, 2018.

Kraanspoor, office building Amsterdam-North. Program: offices/small industry rental space with flexible floor plan. Architect OTH has strived for an architecture by making as little architecture. A seamless combination of industrial heritage and high-tech/innovative technology.
Kraanspoor (translated as crane way) is a light-weight transparent office building of three floors built on top of a concrete crane way on the grounds of the former NDSM shipyard, a relic of Amsterdam’s shipping industry. This industrial monument, built in 1950 by architect J.D. Postma, has a length of 270 meters, a height of 13,5 meters and a width of 8,7 meters, a street length and width, and was saved from demolition in 1997. The new construction assembled on top of this old concrete base – the original Kraanspoor – is the same 270 meters long, with a width of 13,8 meters, accentuates the length of Kraanspoor and the phenomenal expansive view of the river IJ and the old city–centre of Amsterdam. Fully respecting its foundation, the building is lifted by slender steel columns 3 meters above the crane way, appearing to float above the impressive concrete colossus.
The challenge of the design for OTH was to realize a maximum surface area without having to make radical adjustments to the existing concrete structure, utilizing its maximum allowable load-carrying capacity. To help minimize the weight, a light-weight building of steel structure in combination with an infra+ floor system (now referred to as Slimline-floor concept) was chosen for the new development, reducing the total building weight nearly by half.
The existing concrete crane way functions as a foundation for the new building, and carries the maximum possible weight of a three storey building, with an asymmetrical overhang (of 3,25m) on the water-side. This is due to the foundation’s heavier load carrying function for the former revolving cranes used in ship assembly that cantilevered to this side.
Completed in 2007.
The Virginia National Guard Military Funeral Honors Program hosts basic funeral honors training for 30 U.S. Army Soldiers assigned to the Fort Eustis-based 7th Transportation Brigade April 21, 2021 at the State Military Reservation in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Four Virginia Army National Guard Soldiers and one Maryland Army National Guard Soldier provided the five-day training, which covered proper handling of the casket as pall bearers and properly folding and presenting the U.S. flag to the veteran’s next of kin. SAN PEDRO - With the legendary battleship USS Iowa and renowned LAFD Fireboat 2 as a backdrop, the first ever graduates of the Firefighter/EMS Magnet (FEMS) program at Phineas Banning High School in Wilmington, California were honored by civic leaders, including City of Los Angeles Fire Chief Ralph Terrazas and Assistant Chief Steven Gutierrez, both alumni of the school, at a waterfront ceremony on May 24, 2019. Chief Terrazas warmly congratulated each FEMS graduate with a hearty handshake and words of encouragement as their families cheered their unique accomplishment. One of four youth programs supported by the LAFD, FEMS provides a highly structured and progressive pathway for achieving academic, physical and life skills beneficial to a fire service career, including teamwork, leadership, courage and commitment.
