At #FamilyDayMIA: Animal Antics, the MIA was a zoo! It’s a zoo in here! We spent the day celebrating animals large and small and exploring the museum's “The Nature of Nature” exhibition.
We delighted in animal-inspired music performed by the Laurels String Quartet and crafted colorful chameleons, three-dimensional birds, and beautiful koinobori—traditional Japanese windsocks in the shape of koi fish.
Then, we learned about the Institute For Figuring’s global participatory art and science project, the Crochet Coral Reef, and found out how to get involved in our Minneapolis Satellite Reef.
Later, we met fine-feathered friends from the Raptor Center and explored animal adaptations with educators from the Bell Museum.
We moved and grooved with teaching artists from Children’s Theatre Company, went on an adventure exploring animals in art from around the world, and met MCAD@MIA artist Mercedes Knapp and watched her create part of her “Microsafari” installation inspired by Takashi Murakami’s giant Panda.
And it was all FREE! Check out upcoming Family Days.
