The P&G Towers opened in 1985 as their corporate headquarters. This view is from Columbia Parkway as it approaches Cincinnati's Central Business District. The complex occupies an entire city block and has 1.5 million sq. ft. Around 4,000 people work at the headquarters.
St Clement's Church, West Thurrock, is now a nature reserve and redundant 14th century church set within the Proctor and Gamble detergent site adjacent to the Thames. Formerly a marsh/riverside community the church has been replaced by a newer building closer to the population centre.
St Clements featured in the Hugh Grant film 'Four Weddings and a Funeral' as the church used for the funeral of the title.

The Proctor and Gamble factory at Grays, West Thurrock, view from the opposing bank of the river, in Kent...
The factory makes cleaning products for hands that do dishes and more: cleanliness being next to thingy, the factory may be dark but not satanic and it smells nice.

St.Clement's Church, West Thurrock, near Grays in Essex, has quite the oddest location - at the heart of the Proctor and Gamble site, in the middle of an industrial estate. Located off Hedley Road, the redundant church was renovated by P&G in 1987 and the churchyard is now a nature reserve.
If you are looking for it turn right off of Hedley Drive and follow the Proctor and Gamble signs. There is a footpath on the other side of the road to the riverside.
The aisle and side chapels are 14th century and the tower is 15th century. A guidebook tells me that St Clement's was unusual in once having a circular nave. Over the centuries of development the former chancel of the round church became the nave and a new chancel was added. Finally the circular nave was demolised and this tower was built.
This was one of the churches used in the Hugh Grant film 'Four Weddings and a Funeral'.
A reminder of when for "white washes" boiling was seen as a requirement and necessary - in the days before modern detergents and low temperature washes. Daz had been launched only a few months before this December 1953 advert, manufactured by the Newcastle upon Tyne based Thomas Hedley & Co Ltd. Hedley were one of the UK's main detergent manufacturers in a market dominated by the various Unilever concerns.
Hedley's dated back to 1837 and were one of the various Tyneside companies in the soap and later chemical based detergent industries. In 1930 they had been acquired by the American company of Proctor & Gamble who kept the Hedley name for many years before phasing it out. PG's brands, including Daz, are still amongst the market leaders in the UK. The advert relies heavily on the packet design, bright and eye-catching, to draw the eye in along with the rather old fashioned 'guarantee" that if the company's products, that included Fairy Soap, Tide, Dreft, Oxydol, Mirro and Sylvan, didn't "work" you could obtain double your purchase price back.

I’ve uploaded photos showing this factory before, so apologies: but it’s a favourite subject…
Taken from Swanscombe Peninsula, looking across the River Thames at St Clement’s Reach, Procter & Gamble make fragrant detergents at this factory. I think I remember a whiff of parfum reaching me from over the water. I suspect and hope it is harmless (?) steam issuing from the chimney, perhaps also fragrant. I used to walk along both banks of the Thames: the path is beside the grey, concrete wall just above the mud of the shore – I’d start from Grays, to the east of this and walk to Purfleet, to the west. All sorts of interesting things to see and find out about, from links to Four Weddings And A Funeral, Dracula and Queen Elizabeth and more…
Also watching, two cormorants on a listing mooring buoy. The River Thames was once clinically (chemically ?) dead and the cormorants are a sign it is recovering. It looks dirty, due to the water near the shores picking up sediment but it’s surprisingly clear a little bit further out. There was once talk of the cormorants being culled, to protect the fish: I don’t know if that happened. Nowadays, of course, the fish are more at risk from the ‘utility’ companies who “take care of water”.

Known as "PROCTOR and Gamble" for many, they are a giant conglomerate that produces "consumer goods", and have weaseled their way into our homes with the promise of a "spic and span" culture.
The original P&G was created when William PROCTOR, a candle maker, and soapmaker James Gamble, got together and decided to become industrialists; "Proctor & Gamble" was born!
Their name in the papers is everywhere and usually dogged by scandal. They managed to turn industrial waste into household consumer goods, their phosphates choke rivers, they've sponsored and created "daytime television", hence soap operas, they've been slapped on the wrists for industrial espionage multiple times... it goes on and on.
I have never seen a company have to dodge so many accusations of Satanism too! "Throughout the past EIGHT (!) years the corporate giant has tried to set the record straight, only to see rumor of Satanism pop-up and spread all over again." It goes on to say "the company will sue rumor spreaders" and later P&G dragged a bunch of people through the courts to quell those tales!
Lastly, I found a death notice for William PROCTOR and was surprised to find out he commited SUICIDE. Apparently, he took his own life, by shooting himself in the head while his companions enjoyed polite conversation on the porch. I've never heard that mentioned before, but it certainly ads to the sordid history of P&G!

At first glance it seemed a witty way of encouraging Londoners to think tidy and act tidy, in preparation for the Olympics. And I'm very much in favour of using humour, wit, and inventive public information notices to engage people in the green and clean agendas.
But if you click the link given you'll find this is partly an ad for cleaning products made by Procter & Gamble, one of the Olympic Sponsors.

I've been to St Clement's many times but have missed this unusual skull gravestone. The skull is looking upwards.
