NYC Transit crews fanned out across sections of eighteen different subway lines this past Mother’s Day weekend performing repairs heavy duty maintenance and major system upgrades. Along the Brighton Line section of the B and Q lines in Southern Brooklyn, crews performed major track bed reconstruction work near the Avenue J station. Crews removed the ballast that forms the track bed, the running rails and the old wooden ties that anchor the rails in place which were nearing the end of their useful life. In their place crews installed new 39-foot sections of new rail, complete with new concrete ties which last longer than wood ties. These new track infrastructure components will improve reliability and make for a smoother ride along this section of track.

The MTA Capital Program which helps prioritize the investments that will be essential to renew, enhance, and expand the system to meet the changing needs of the region, its economy, and its residents.

During current 2010-2014 Capital Program we’ve bought new subway cars, new commuter railroad cars, new local buses, and new express buses. We installed more modern signals for faster and better rides. We’re building new rail lines and connections that will serve New York for generations to come. And after Superstorm Sandy ravaged our network, we committed nearly $1 billion to fix the damage and fortify against future storms. With a fully-funded 2015-2019 Capital Program, we’ll continue making our system more resilient against big storms. We’ll bring Positive Train Control—a state-of-the-art signal system—to Metro-North and the LIRR. We’ll continue introducing new routes for Select Bus Service, which uses off-board fare collection, low-floor, high capacity buses, and dedicated bus lanes to cut travel times by nearly 20 percent. We’ll replace 86 miles of subway track with safer, smoother track. And we’ll complete hundreds of similar projects that keep our customers safe and on time. These types of projects may not be glamorous, but together with the normal replacement of our trains and buses, they are the key to moving 8.7 million people every day, safely and reliably.

On Thursday, Dec. 17, Rush University Medical Center administered its first COVID-19 vaccines to frontline employees in the Tier 1 vaccine group, identified in accordance with CDC criteria prioritizing staff from areas where COVID-19 patients are treated.

I have a serious addiction for pack dolls! I was tantalized by these two sets from the moment I learned of their existence. Sadly, I never really saw them in stores though, except a select few times when I ventured out to Target or Toys 'R' Us. My main attraction to these sets was the inclusion of Cameron! I was left speechless when I discovered that MGA was bringing him back for the 2015 relaunch. The anticipation of his release was very strong, and I actually had to resist the urge to buy the Cameron and Cloe pack the first time I saw it (when I was using a coupon to buy my separately sold Hello My Name Is Jade). Something I've learned from the past few years as an adult collector is that Bratz dolls go on the best sales. Since I am a self professed Bratz addict, I've negotiated with myself that if I want to buy a lot of Bratz dolls, I have to wait for them to go on sale (otherwise I'll go broke). Honestly, it's not that hard for me to wait around for stuff to get marked down, because I've had to wait years to find certain things at the flea market. But, the beautiful thing about the 2015 Bratz dolls is that they were marked down to clearance prices within a few months of being released! In fact, there were so many good sales, that I had to strategically plan out which dolls I would prioritize and buy first, since I simply couldn't afford to buy all the on sale dollies at one time. I purchased these two packs on the second occasion I ordered a huge haul of on sale goodies from the TRU website. The first time I placed a similar ginormous order, back in November 2015, these dolls were still really new, so I figured they'd certainly go on sale again. My initial hunch was correct, and I was able to get them for more than 50% off only a few months later!

I had great expectations for Cameron, since I most longed for him to be part of my Bratz collection. Being that I had only a few opportunities to look at these sets on store shelves, I honestly wasn't the least bit familiar with Yasmin or Sasha. Plus, I was so taken with Cameron, that I sort of blew Cloe off whenever I did happen to see their pack. It was actually really exciting opening these two sets for that reason. I felt like a little kid on Christmas opening up two unknown entities. As grateful as I am to have Cameron, I can't deny that Yasmin is most certainly my favorite one from the entire Metallic Madness line (including the separately sold ladies). She is so PRETTY!!! I'm thinking she's in the top five for most stunning Yasmin dolls ever made (the others being 2013 "Basic," 2002 Strut It!, 2003 Funk 'N' Glow, and 2006 Genie Magic Yasmin). It's hard to pay any of the other three dolls pictured above any attention when the ever so gorgeous Yasmin is next to them! I think if I had owned her when I was younger, I would have played with her all the time (poor 2002 Xpress It! Yasmin would have been totally shafted). There is just something so hypnotizing about Yasmin's long, chestnut colored hair, her crazy purple lips (which remind me of my one of my favorite dolls of all time--Jewel Girl Teresa), and her darling outfit which flatters her flawlessly.

Even though Yasmin steals the show, the other three dolls from the two packs are also amazing! Sasha is GORGEOUS...in fact, if she hadn't been sold with the goddess Yasmin, I'd probably be drooling over her more right now. I really love how her dark skin pops with the gold and red accents of her outfit. Cloe is as cute as a button--her platinum hair and freckles are to die for. Plus, she looks extra sweet in her bridal attire (I know she's supposed to be dressed for a dance, but let's face it, it looks like she's heading to a wedding chapel). Cameron is the same doll as his Hello My Name Is counterpart, but his outfit is SO much cooler! I like that it's super tacky--it really sets him apart from all the other Cameron dolls in my collection. Plus, his hat is the most amazing quality piece I've seen in a while (and I've seen so many great clothes and accessories from the 2015 lines).

I'm so glad that 2015 was a year of packs for Bratz. I mean there was the Hello My Name Is 5 Pack, the #BFFL packs, and these two Metallic Dance sets. I know that some collectors find packs frustrating, because it means that you have to adopt two or more dolls when perhaps you only really want one of them. Plus, even though each doll is generally speaking a little cheaper than a separately sold one, the overall prices of such packs can be a tad pricey (most are over $30). But for me, I think of packs as a sort of doll buffet. It's a great way to sample new dolls that maybe I otherwise would have ignored. I think it's exciting to let my collection shape itself and not to overthink which dolls are a part of it. It's fun to get dolls like the "bridal" Cloe pictured here, my eighth 2002 Strut It! Yasmin doll, Scaris Lagoona, or my Magic Snow Jaxson doll, who joined my doll family by chance because they were part of used lots or new packs. That's what I love the most about doll packs like these--they give me the chance to fall in love with someone totally unexpected, and oftentimes, I end up enjoying them as much, if not more than the doll I originally purchased the pack for!

For as long as I can remember I have been a top notch listmaker and prioritizer. Seems with all the things going on in the last few months this little strategy has slipped away from me. So this morning I sat down with a nice hot fresh pressed Cup o Joe and got back on the horse, starting with my new favorite thing of course. My dolls.

NTRODUCTION: In 1994, ArcelorMittal has outlined guidelines for the Environment, in line with its policy. It prioritizes projects that focused on the knowledge of environmental aspects and impacts, as well as its monitoring and mitigation, the reduction of resources and improvement of process efficiency, protection, conservation and restoration of biodiversity and community integration, within this last theme was created Regular Environmental Education Program.

OBJECTIVES: (1) Promoting activities of individual and collective local actions to contribute to the conservation and preservation of the environment, (2) Cooperate with the school of Regional Schools, (3) Recognize the importance of socio-economic and environmental natural and planted forests, (4) Understand the importance of rational use of natural resources and biodiversity.

METHODOLOGY: Implementation of an Environmental Education Center where works are developed on a regular basis, in partnership with the Regional Superintendent of Education and the School District and State and the Municipality of Carbonita. A regular program of environmental education is carried out with students from the 7th year of the respective municipality due to: the curriculum content of the sixth grade, the age range of students, and to continue the activities and not just a "ride" the CEAM. Each class visits the CEAM twice a year and the program coordinator visits the school once, talking with students about the diagnosis or the environmental situation of the school. During the school holidays are designed work with employees and contractors, parents, neighbors of company property.

RESULTS: promoting recycling of teachers through courses and seminars, dissemination and multiplication of environmental education, it was observed that students gained more knowledge about the need for

effective actions to ensure the future; a higher valuation of the improvements made in the community, most recognize the importance of improving the school environment, show maturity and critical questioning about environmental issues. Are met staff, parents and students visited all registered neighbors. From 04/10/94 to 31/12/2011, the Environmental Education Centers in Arcelor Mittal Carbonita and Bom Despacho has already received more than 110,000 people.

CONCLUSIONS: Working in partnership enables better planning of activities, includes institutions that have common goals, divide the responsibilities and costs enabling effective action permitting the exercise of citizenship that implies commitment, participation, rights and responsibilities of each member of society as a influencing the environment we live in, instead of taking ourselves for it.

Kick-off and release!

After a short 'cheat-survey' between Cape Town and Durban, the official start of the 2018 research expeditions with Dr. Fridtjof Nansen was marked with a grand reception in Durban, South Africa. The event took place onboard Dr Fridtjof Nansen on the 26th of January, and discussed the current situation of local and international fisheries, and the importance of multi-disciplinary research and cross-boundary partnerships in addressing pressing challenges such as marine pollution and climate change.

On the guest list were a number of prominent guests including Senzeni Zokwana, the South African Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, and Trine Skymoen, the Norwegian Ambassador to South Africa. The visitors were given a guided tour of the technologically advanced research vessel.

The most important guests who were welcomed onboard Dr. Fridtjof Nansen that day however, were probably five young Leatherback turtles (Caretta caretta). The turtles were found stranded 18 months ago and have since been in recovery with the uShaka Sea World's conservation team. They were now declared sufficiently rehabilitated to be released back into the ocean, and as the research expedition's first planned transect line was in an area deemed suitable for release, the turtles were left in the care of the onboard scientific team.

After 15 hours of overnight steaming the release point was finally reached. With both scientists and crew present to cheer them on, the turtles were lowered one by one into the sea in a basket from the trawl deck. Free and back in their natural environment, they immediately dived down and disappeared into the blue. Having completed the days most important task of giving five little turtles another chance at life, we're now hard at work collecting equally important multi-disciplinary data to better understand the biodiversity and oceanic conditions in the environment in which these five wonderful creatures will continue living their life.

Belize City, Belize, 31 March 2021 (PAHO/WHO) - Belize today received 33,600 doses of COVID-19 vaccines through the COVAX Facility, a global effort between the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance Gavi, UNICEF, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

The arrival marks a historic step toward ensuring the equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccines worldwide, in the largest vaccine procurement and supply operation in history. This delivery is part of the first phase of deliveries for Belize, and more vaccines are expected to arrive successively during 2021. According to the first round of COVAX allocations, Belize is expected to continue receiving doses until it reaches 100,800, the amount specified by COVAX.

PAHO’s Revolving Fund, which is responsible for the procurement of COVID-19 vaccines for the countries of the Americas under the COVAX Mechanism, sent 33,600 doses of the AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine, manufactured by SK Bioscience of South Korea. The vaccines arrived today at the Phillip Goldson International Airport (PGIA).

“The arrival of the vaccines through COVAX is very encouraging as it means that more people will now be able to be protected from COVID-19,” said Dr. Noreen Jack, PAHO/WHO Representative in Belize. “We will continue to work with the Ministry of Health and Wellness and the country to support vaccination along with the known public health and social measures that can help stop the spread of COVID-19, protect health services, and save lives.”

These first vaccines will serve to protect priority groups and those most at risk, such as health workers, older adults, persons with special conditions (cancer, HIV & requiring dialysis), as well as persons in the other vaccine distribution phases in Belize.

Hon. Michel Chebat, Minister of the Ministry of Health and Wellness expressed how grateful he was for this delivery that will add to the vaccines that we already have.

“We extend appreciation for the team effort coordinated through our partners, PAHO/WHO, UNICEF and IDB for negotiating, purchasing, and handling the shipment logistics on behalf of Belize and the other 36 countries participating in COVAX,” said Minister Chebat. “This was our only hope for a long time to ensure that the people of Belize get vaccines and now we can celebrate the arrival today.”

Since the first case of COVID-19 was reported in 2020, the country has recorded 12,452 cases and 317 deaths as a result of the SARS-CoV-2 virus (as of 30 March 2021).

“Today’s arrival of the first COVAX shipment marks another milestone for the children of Belize who have been the silent victims of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Alison Parker, Representative for UNICEF Belize. “The past year has plunged Belize into a humanitarian and socio-economic crisis upending the lives of societies, communities and families, especially children. As over 108,000 children prepare to return to the classrooms in the upcoming months, the arrival of the vaccines advances us one step closer to creating a post-COVID environment that is safe for children to return to schools and regain a sense of security and normalcy. It is also a signal of the commitment of the Government and partners like the COVAX, inclusive of UNICEF, to prioritize mobilizing required resources to afford Belizeans optimal health care and protection in response to this crisis. Accelerating vaccination coverage is critical to stabilizing the social and economic impact of COVID-19 and rebuilding Belize, and UNICEF is proud to be part of this national effort in the interest of Belize’s children.”

COVAX seeks to provide vaccines for at least 20% of the population of each participating country during 2021. In this first round of vaccine allocation, all COVAX participating countries will receive doses to vaccinate between 2.2 and 2.6% of their population. The only exceptions are small island developing States, which will receive an allocation of vaccines to cover between 16 and 20% of their population, due to the high logistical cost of delivering small quantities of vaccines.

“Expanding access to vaccines is vital for overcoming the pandemic and its detrimental effects on the life of people and the economy,” said Birgit Gerstenberg, Resident Coordinator of United Nations Belize. “Its progress is crucial in order to get back to the path of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, in particular, poverty reduction, food security for all, universal health coverage, decent work and so much more. Thanks to science and technology, the newly developed COVID-19 vaccines are made available in record time and poised to be a powerful tool in the control of the devastating COVID-19 pandemic. The public’s confidence in, and willingness to receive the vaccines will determine the outcome of this mass-scale public health intervention. The United Nations Country Team has been working tirelessly this past year to provide as much support to the Government of Belize in facing the consequences of the pandemic and helping those most at-risk. Let us continue to confront the pandemic and take all measures of mitigation at our reach. Stay at home when you are sick, wear a mask when among others, practice social distancing and when eligible, receiving a COVID-19 vaccine. Consider it a measure that may save lives as only together, we will build back better.”

Until vaccination is widespread among the population, basic public health measures remain the basis of the pandemic response. For public health authorities, this means continuing to conduct screening, contact tracing, isolation, assisted quarantine, and quality care. And for people, it means continuing to practice physical distancing, hand hygiene, the use of masks, adequate ventilation of indoor environments, and avoidance of crowded spaces.

“Today is a bright day in the year-ling fight against COVID-19, said Nicolaus Hansmann, Team Leader of the European Union Technical Office in Belize. “With the arrival of these vaccines under the multi-actor global collaboration, COVAX, we are getting closer to the goal of bringing the virus under control. As one of the lead partners of COVAX, contributing over 2.2 billion Euros, the European Union and its Member States are proud of its role in ensuring equitable access to vaccines for people everywhere.”

COVAX, the vaccines pillar of the Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator, is co-led by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance Gavi) and the World Health Organization (WHO) – working in partnership with UNICEF as key implementing partner, as well as civil society organisations, vaccine manufacturers, the World Bank, and others. In the Americas, the PAHO Revolving Fund is the recognized procurement agent for the COVAX facility.
