Crossing the Trent river outside Newark with the sugar factory in the background, is 60066 'Drax-Powering Tomorrow' hauling 30 empty oil tanks from Kingsbury Oil Sidings back to Lindsey Oil Refinery on the North Sea coast.

The working is 6E46, the 04.37 from Kingsbury to Lindsey. The combined weight of the empty tanks are estimated to be around 1,000 tons.

66730 "Whitemoor" crosses Gauxholme Viaduct with 4M60 13:45 Milford Down Sidings to Seaforth biomass empties. 6/10/2015. This was a wagon move to prepare for the upcoming Biomass services from Liverpool to Drax via the Calder Valley. Given the prevailing conditions when the photo was taken - heavy rain and full dull, I assumed the shot would be a write-off - it certainly looked like it on the back of the camera. However I thought I'd process it to see what it looked like and to my amazement, and thanks to the wonders of digital technology, I don't think it looks too bad. At least it's a record shot of the first one.

GB Railfreight Class 60, 60076 "Dunbar" passes Northwich Station Junction and the end of the freight-only Middlewich Branch as it heads east with 6E09 08:07 Liverpool Biomass Terminal to Drax Power Station.

Making its debut on the Liverpool biomass circuit, GB Railfreight Class 66, 66797 leads Class 60, 60056 through Plumley on the Sunday afternoon empty wagon move from Doncaster - 6M51 12:03 Doncaster Down Decoy to Liverpool Biomass Terminal.

66152 "Derek Holmes Railway Operator" passes Melton Ross with 6H63 12:15 Immingham to Drax loaded biomass. 25/11/2015.

60066 has just passed through Cononley with 6E97 10:44 Newbiggin to Tees Dock empty gypsum. 4/12/2019. To say that I was lucky with this is an understatement. I don't know how the sun stayed out, but I'm glad it did, as this was probably the last chance to get a 60 in sun on this train until late the next year and as we all know what happened in 2020...................

60095 passes High Eggborough with 6H12 06:24 Tyne to Drax loaded biomass. 10/10/2018. This was the first loaded train the loco had worked in GBRf livery and it couldn't have run in better conditions!

60095 approaches West Bank Crossing on the Drax Branch with 6N61 12:00 Drax to Tyne biomass empties. 10/10/2018.

60066 runs down through Ribblehead with 6E97 10:44 Newbiggin to Tees Dock gypsum empties. 29/11/2019.

60021 "Penyghent" approaches Heaton Lodge Jcn with 6E09 07:11 Liverpool to Drax loaded biomass. 7/2/2020. Despite both myself and Mick Page being present, full sun eluded us as it had gone milky just before the train came. Shame, although it could have been worse. I wish someone would knock that b****** bush down too!

GB Railfreight Class 66/6, 66795 "Bescot LDC" makes its loaded debut on the Liverpool-Drax biomass circuit working 6E10 11:35 Liverpool Biomass Terminal to Drax Power Station past Northwich Station Junction.

Although 66795 was a standard spec Class 66 when it was imported from Europe in early 2021, it has recently been re-geared during a wheelset change to the High Tractive Effort 66/6 spec. It therefore joins 793, 794 and 796 in the GBHH ("Heavy Haul") pool.

66704 "Colchester Power Signal Box" passes Dover Bridge, Eastwood with 4M51 10:00 Drax to Liverpool Biomass Terminal. 19/4/2016. This shot was taken from the then recently rebuilt footbridge which is a lot higher than the old one. Steps are now required to get above the high parapets of the new bridge.

GB Railfreight Class 66, 66796 "The Green Progressor" makes its debut on a loaded biomass working, leading 6E27 18:54 Liverpool Biomass Terminal to Drax Power Station through Lostock Gralam.

Beacon Rail Leasing-owned 66796 is a recent import from Europe and the fourth member of GBRf's GBHH sub-pool of High Tractive Effort Class 66/6 spec locos (i.e. 793-796).

GB Railfreight Class 60, 60002 "Graham Farish 50th Anniversary 1970-2020" roars out from under the bridge at Knustford powering 6E27 19:43 Liverpool Biomass Terminal to Drax Power Station.

The path for this working was amended, with the service actually starting at Tuebrook Sidings on this occasion.

My first visit to Knutsford station - not a bad little shack for night shot it would appear.

On only its second foray onto the Liverpool biomass circuit after its repaint into GBRf colours in September 2018, a very clean-looking 60095 works a rake of empty hoppers over Northwich viaduct on its way from Doncaster Down Decoy to Liverpool Biomass Terminal (6M51).

Photo taken whilst out exercising myself and the dog.

60002 "Tempest" approaches Heaton Lodge East Junction with 6E09 07:11 Liverpool BT to Drax loaded biomass. 10/3/2019. Close run thing, this - you can just see the shadows creeping over the rear of the train.

66704 "Colchester Power Signal Box" emerges from Winterbuttlee Tunnel, Walsden with 4M51 10:00 Drax to Liverpool empty biomass. 5/5/2016.

60076 "Dunbar" crosses Brighouse Viaduct with 6E09 07:11 Liverpool BT to Drax loaded biomass. 8/10/2019. This was "Last Chance Saloon" in more than one way - I'd already got done on two trains by this time and by the looks of things this shot wasn't going to be on for much longer, given the way that the vegetation was encroaching - not least on the viaduct itself, which is still long overdue for some remedial work. As it is, I only just managed to squeeze a shot into the very tight gap, but I'm grateful that I did, otherwise the day would have been a total "write off".

66749 crosses Brighouse Viaduct with 4M51 09:57 Drax to Tuebrook Sidings biomass empties. 12/11/2015. This was one of three locos that GBRf bought from Germany and they carried their original liveries for some time, until GBRf eventually repainted them. This was a pity, as they added yet more variety to the scene.

66707 crosses Gauxholme Viaduct with 4M51 10:00 Drax to Liverpool Biomass Terminal. 2/3/2016.

Powering Tomorrow

Drax liveried 60066 thumps through Attenborough Nature Reserve with Kingsbury - Humber loaded oil tanks.

Having not photted this 60 previously, ‘the one that got away’ ended up getting caught after all!

GB Railfreight Class 66, 66727 "Maritime One" gets its load going again (slowly!) as it climbs through Lostock Gralam having waited time with 6E24 16:56 Liverpool Biomass Terminal to Drax Power Station in the goods loop at Northwich.

GB Railfreight Class 60, 60002 "Graham Farish 50th Anniversary 1970-2020" leads 6E24 16:20 Liverpool Biomass Terminal to Drax Power Station across the Dutton Viaduct under the rain clouds of another wet spring day in Cheshire.

GB Railfreight Class 66, 66794 "Steve Hannam" waits time at Northwich station with 6M51 12:03 Doncaster Down Decoy to Liverpool Biomass Terminal.

The station buildings at Northwich are still in a bit of a state after their partial collapse on 18 May, although work has now started to repair them.

Working the last load of biomass from Liverpool before the late-summer shut-down at Drax, GB Railfreight Class 60, 60021 "PENYGHENT" powers through Acton Bridge with 6E10 11:15 Liverpool Biomass Terminal to Drax Power Station.

GB Railfreight's Trainload Construction-liveried Class 66/6, 66794 "Steve Hannam" lays down the sand as it leads Class 60, 60087 (DIT) on 6E17 13:02 Liverpool Biomass Terminal to Drax Power Station past the Plumley West Section Signal (PY3).

The 60 had been suffering from low power issues so was being moved back to Doncaster (via Drax) for tripping to Toton for attention and also a B Exam whilst it's there.

The "celebrity" High Tractive Effort Shed was also due to come off the Liverpool biomass circuit once it reached Doncaster the following day (via Drax and 6D99).

66706 "Nene Valley" crosses Gauxholme Viaduct with 4M51 11:53 Milford West Sidings to Tuebrook Sidings biomass empties. 31/10/2016.

66750 approaches Heck Ings Foot Crossing with 4N30 15:29 Drax PS to Tyne Dock biomass empties. 2/4/2015. This day was the first time I'd captured this loco in sun, although I'd seen it twice before - once when I wasn't in a position to phot it and another time when I got totally bowled by cloud. It felt good to have finally got it under my belt.

GB Railfreight Class 60, 60026 "Helvellyn" powers up the incline through Lostock Gralam with 25 loaded biomass hoppers in tow as it heads east with 6E24 16:56 Liverpool Biomass Terminal to Drax Power Station.

Having waited time in the goods loop at Northwich whilst 6H02 (also photographed) passed, GB Railfreight Class 60, 60026 "Helvellyn" gets its journey back underway, heading through Lostock Gralam with 6E09 08:07 Liverpool Biomass Terminal to Drax Power Station.

The Beacon Rail-liveried Class 60 and its wagons were bouncing along over a ropey bit of track on the Up Line through the station.

GB Railfreight Class 66, 66786 leads 6M51 12:03 Doncaster Down Decoy to Liverpool Biomass Terminal across the Northwich Viaduct at Hunts Locks to start off another week of the Liverpool/Drax biomass circuit.

GB Railfreight Class 60, 60026 "Helvellyn" powers up the incline through Lostock Gralam with 6E34 21:32 Liverpool Biomass Terminal to Drax Power Station.

66703 "Doncaster PSB 1981-2002" crosses Gauxholme Viaduct with 6E10 08:20 Liverpool to Drax loaded biomass. 18/8/2016. The photo was taken at 16:40 so it took this train eight hours and twenty minutes to travel just over fifty miles!
