Chances are you have made Google your best friend throughout your pregnancy. You would research on all things revolving around pregnancy and the experience of childbirth. Some of the stories you come across are cool, yet others are quite horrifying – but you would naturally brush them off. “These are things that can never happen to me,” you might comfort yourself with these words at times.

Maternity ward at Ngulyati Health Centre, Bariadi District, Simiyu Region, Tanzania.
The Ngulyati Health Centre serves a largely rural population and acts as a referral centre for more than seven dispensaries. Before the renovations at the centre – supported by UNFPA – pregnant women experiencing complications were referred to Somanda Hospital, at least an hour away via a dirt track, or two from the furthest dispensary. This was causing unnecessary delays, one of the major obstacles towards reducing maternal deaths in the region.
UNFPA, under the KOICA-funded “Nilinde Nikulinde Project”, supported the construction of the maternity ward and operating theatre providing all necessary equipment. Health workers also attended training in both equipment use and managing obstetric emergencies – supported by UNFPA.
UNFPA also supported the drilling of a deep water well, which now provides clean water to all wards, clinics, theatre and staff quarters.
