The Charmborough Ring
The Charmborough Ring has six bells that are rung in the same way as those in churches and cathedrals throughout the country. It is probably the easiest portable belfry to ring due to its relatively large bells and wheels, and is ideal for presenting “change–ringing” (often referred to as “campanology” by non-ringers) to the public and for introducing newcomers to this physically and intellectually rewarding team activity.
The wheel method of ringing bells is common in Britain but seldom used in the rest of Europe, the advantage of this method is that the bell can be stopped at the top of its travel, thereby allowing the clapper to hit the bell a single stroke, something that cannot be done with bells that freely swing when the rope is pulled. Each bell rotates backwards and forwards, sounding once as it rotates in each direction. By changing the speed of rotation, the ringers cause the bells to sound in different orders according to a pre-arranged permutation or “method”.
The Charmborough Bell Trust is an educational charity set up in 2008 to promote an awareness of the historically and culturally important English art and science of change–ringing (as originated on church bells).
This is achieved through enabling local teams to put on public demonstrations of ringing, and provide information to people in the wider community, regardless of age, race, gender or religion.
By taking the Ring to public events, a wide audience can see and better understand what change–ringing involves, and receive free short ‘taster’ handling lesson. People can usually handle the backstroke within 1 - 2 minutes and then participate in rounds with a teacher ringing the handstroke.
The framework elements are first off-loaded from the trailer and assembled with the end “portals” flat on the ground. The Trust’s erection supervisor will ensure that the steel frame elements, many of which are “handed” and not interchangeable, are assembled in their correct positions. A team of at least 5 people then raise each portal to the vertical position and secure them in place with diagonal braces.
The rest of the erection process is greatly eased if the trailer can be positioned under the erected frame. The trailer can then be used as a working platform from which the bells, each housed in sub–frames holding two bells, can be hoisted into position. This is achieved using an electric hoist powered either from the mains or a petrol powered portable generator.
