Au-dessus du faciès coléreux : "Ah que les cornes vont bien sur un front comme le mien" ! Ce faciès orne l'entrée de la Maison des cornards, au 16, rue Chamarlenc, au Puy-en-Velay. Elle "était en fait le siège de la Confrérie des Cornards. Cette société était une sorte d’académie de bons vivants, fondée au lendemain des guerres de religion. Ses membres formaient cortège et allaient festoyer sur la rive droite de la Loire, à Saint-Germain la Prade. Lors du rite d’intronisation d’un nouveau membre de la confrérie, celui-ci et tous les compagnons devaient embrasser un peuplier qui se trouvait là. D’après un témoignage de 1887, le rituel existait encore, même si la société elle-même avait depuis longtemps disparu. La confrérie comme le rituel semblent s’inscrire dans la lignée des charivaris, manifestations populaires bien connues, qui avaient pour fonction de rappeler aux jeunes mariés la menace du cocuage, ou de sanctionner les couples infidèles, adultères, mal assortis…" (source : polymathe.over-blog.com/article-19882164.html).
