A Long-billed Hermit (Phaethornis longirostris) hummingbird visiting a Heliconia field at Braullio Carrillo National Park, Costa Rica. Pollination is critical for flower reproduction and the rainforest health Hummingbirds play a crucial role in the pollination of many different flower types some of them have even evolved specific characteristics to entice hummingbirds to help their reproduction.
This is a capture for one of my course work submissions regarding flowers and insects.
The most recognized pollinators are the various species of bees, which are plainly adapted to pollination. Bees typically are fuzzy and carry an electrostatic charge. Both features help pollen grains adhere to their bodies, but they also have specialized pollen-carrying structures; in most bees, this takes the form of a structure known as the scopa, which is on the hind legs of most bees, and/or the lower abdomen (e.g., of megachilid bees), made up of thick, plumose setae.
Honey bees, bumblebees, and their relatives do not have a scopa, but the hind leg is modified into a structure called the corbicula (also known as the "pollen basket"). Most bees gather nectar, a concentrated energy source, and pollen, which is high protein food, to nurture their young, and inadvertently transfer some among the flowers as they are working. Euglossine bees pollinate orchids, but these are male bees collecting floral scents rather than females gathering nectar or pollen. Female orchid bees act as pollinators, but of flowers other than orchids. Eusocial bees such as honey bees need an abundant and steady pollen source to multiply.
Another hoverfly taking the chance to feed on pollen/nectar from an Echinopsis cactus whilst it flowered this year. Insects seem to love these flowers, but have only a short time to enjoy them because they wilt within 48 hours of blooming. We had 7 flowers initially, followed by this lone flower almost a week later than the first set.
This is an image of "Al" - the well known Allen's Hummingbird - after he had pollinated himself at the Los Angeles County Arboretum !!! Seen in July 2015.

As the wildflower season waned, we saw insects in full swing.
Along the Mosel, in a very steep vineyard, this beautiful pile of brush and wood is a gift to pollinating insects and other invertebrates that benefit the plants.

I spent some time this past summer trying to learn how better to secure images of pollinators of all kinds. That project was motivated by my sunrise walks down an abandoned road southeast of Ottawa, where overgrown wildflowers grew in thick and deep bunches on the sides of the road, and where butterflies and moths and bees and wasps spent the first light re-energizing for the new day.
The subjects of the photographs had a lot more freedom to drift away from the road to the wild meadows than I had - old fences and thick vegetation kept me pretty hemmed in. That meant having to get creative in most cases, which was part of learning how to manage the situation. I really liked this image, shot through a wall of vegetation to find the Skipper - not an especially exotic one for people who know these creatures - who was drinking from the wildflower.
This activity and the many early mornings it entailed was a response to the impact of the pandemic on birding and bird photography. Most of my usual places had not adjusted particularly well to the changed circumstances, and so the solitary mornings were just what the public health officials ordered.
I really hope everyone is safe and has a great holiday break. I now know people (healthcare workers) who are scheduled to be vaccinated shortly in Ottawa so things are slowly moving forward - please take care.
And many sincere thanks to the people who look at, like and/or comment on my images. I really appreciate the connection. I spend a lot of my free time looking at and learning from others, but this is an amazing community, and it offers a lot to me in different ways - especially with the superb images people are posting. This is also Graceland Cemetery. When I returned from New Orleans in late 2015, this was a new addition to the southeast corner of the cemetery.

Today, I saw many butterflies, dragonflies, and bees, but only managed to photograph this one on the orange flowers or Asclepias tuberosa, commonly known as butterfly weed.
