Butterfly-pollinated flowers tend to be large and showy, pink or lavender in colour, frequently have a landing area, and are usually scented. Since butterflies do not digest pollen (with one exception), more nectar is offered than pollen. The flowers have simple nectar guides with the nectaries usually hidden in narrow tubes or spurs, reached by the long tongue of the butterflies.

Epipactis purpurata is pollinated almost exclusively by wasps. The orchid is quite attractive to them and they crawl over the plant with a bunch of pollinia attached to their head.

The poor spring in the west of Scotland has meant that there are far fewer buzzy things flying around my garden that usual. However, when the sun does come out, so do the insects, anxious to make up for lost time. You can sense the sheer glee in this small bumblebee as it pounces - tongue extended in readiness - on an apple blossom in its belated quest for nectar, and to do its essential job of accidentally pollinating my fruit trees. I used my Nikon D300s and a 60mm macro lens. The sensitivity was set to 800 ISO with a shutter speed of 1/1000s to freeze the motion.
This is my 71st "Picture of the Day" in Glasgow's "Herald" newspaper.
I love the way the bees that emerge first in spring engage inna real pollen fest, burying themsleves deep into the flowers and coming up covered in pollen! Happy Beautiful Bug Butt Thursday everyone!
Happy Spring! Crocus Pollination is happening. The bees were busy today. I love the frilly looking stigma on this flower and so does the bee. Purple and White Crocuses.

One of the most common bees in Eastern North America, particularly in urban and disturbed environments. They are attracted to piles of dirt or open scraped soils and appear to be a huge fan of clovers, plants that also favor lawns and open disturbed sites. The female (look it up) mirrors most other small, dark bees in that group, with a few white marks on its lower face. The male Calliopsis andreniformis pictured here is spectacularly different. Brilliant yellow to an exhibitionistic level. This one comes from Baltimore City.
