Kniphofia also called tritoma, red hot poker, torch lily, knofflers or poker plant, is a genus of perennial flowering plants in the family Asphodelaceae. It is native to Africa. Herbaceous species and hybrids have narrow, grass-like leaves 10–100 cm long, while evergreen species have broader, strap-shaped foliage up to 1.5 m long. All plants produce spikes of upright, brightly coloured flowers well above the foliage, in shades of red, orange and yellow, often bicoloured. Well, this description will be somewhat different, since I write for you and some of my sponsors.
First of all, a thousand apologies for being sooo inactive, my flickr was suspended due to the new rules and I had to wait almost a week for the problem to be solved.
Second, I've had to delete almost all of my photos from old to some new (in this case, the ones I felt didn't meet the “safe” standard).
And third and last, I will be making posts a little less constant because my university scheduled me in the afternoon and I hardly have much time between jobs, projects and exams, because I have to redo my schedules and get used to it. I used to play a lot of dice and doms for matchsticks when I was in the forces (Playing for money was against regulations)
A macro shot of my older poker dice from the 1950s, taken for my Macro Mondays group, “Board game pieces” theme (dice were accepted).
This is probably one of the last photos I will ever take with my trusty Micro–Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 macro lens. I bought it in March 2008 and it served me well for a solid 13–year stint and a slew of assorted photographs, not all of them macros, far from it!
Now, however, with the advent of mirrorless and the Z mount, it is time to move on. I have already pre–ordered a copy of the new 105mm f/2.8 S that has just been announced by Nikon, and I wil soon put my old friend to auction on eBay, in the hope of finding a new home and a new owner who will appreciate it as much as I have over all those years together.
This is also the first time I use the new geared head that I purchased recently, a Benro GD3WH (a mouthful!) which I thought would serve me better for architectural shots than tha Leofoto panoramic head I have been using these past few months. We will see. The Benro seems to work fine. Of course, it is a lot bulkier and almost double the weight, but it does allow for much more precise adjustments.
Strobist and technical: one Phottix Pro Indra500 monolight on a Profoto light stand in Rembrandt position to camera right, 1.5 meters from subject and 1 meter above it, firing at 1/8 power through a Phottix Pro 110–cm Luna octabox with double diffuser; and one Phottix Pro Mitros+ cobra flash on its table stand in backlit Rembrandt position to camera left, 1.5 meters from subject and at about the same height, firing at 1/8 power through its diffusion dome.
Strobes set and triggered via Phottix Pro Odin II radio controller on the Nikon Z7 hot shoe, manual mode. Sekonic L–858D light meter used to balance light sources. Gitzo GT2530 tripod with Benro GD3WH geared head. Nikon Z7 camera body, Micro–Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 VR macro lens with FTZ adapter.
