A developing Physalis 'lantern' hidden away close to the plant stem amongst the leaves. I'm looking forward to the red papery lanterns and ripe berries in the autumn. The leaves and developing fruit are highly poisonous, possibly fatal, if eaten but the ripe fruit are edible.

The name physalis means bladder, which refers to the shape of the calyx of the Chinese lantern plant. Also known by many other names including Inca berry, Poha berry, Cape gooseberry, Aztec berry, Golden berry, Pineapple ground cherry, Giant ground cherry, Peruvian ground cherry, Peruvian cherry, etc.

Delicious to eat and delightful to photograph, especially the showy husks.

We only see these occasionally, and I will grab a punnet so that I can shoot the lovely golden berries in the beautiful semi-transparent husks!

(These berries here are about 1cm across)

"Physalis (/ˈfaɪsəlɪs/, /fɪ-/, /faɪˈseɪlɪs/, /-ˈsæ-/, from φυσαλλίς phusallís "bladder") is a genus of flowering plants in the nightshade family (Solanaceae), which grow in warm temperate and subtropical regions of the world. Most of the species, of which there may be 75–90, are indigenous to the Americas. Cultivated species and weedy annuals have been introduced worldwide. A notable feature is the formation of a large papery husk derived from the calyx, which partly or fully encloses the fruit. The fruit is small and orange, similar in size, shape and structure to a small tomato (hence the name husk tomatoes).

At least 46 species are endemic to the country of Mexico.[4]

Many Physalis species are called groundcherries.[5] One name for Physalis peruviana is Inca berry; another is Cape gooseberry, not to be confused with the true gooseberries, which are of the genus Ribes in the family Grossulariaceae. Other names used to refer to the fruit are poha berries, and simply golden berries" (Wiki)

Physalis peruviana, is a South American plant native to Colombia, Ecuador and Peru in the nightshade family (Solanaceae), commonly known as Cape gooseberry or goldenberry, known in its countries of origin as aguaymanto, uvilla or uchuva, in Hawaii called poha, and in Egypt called Harankash, in addition to numerous indigenous and regional names. The goldenberry is also known as ground cherry. [2][3][4] The history of P. peruviana cultivation in South America can be traced to the Inca Empire.[5][6] It has been cultivated in England since the late 18th century, and in South Africa in the Cape of Good Hope since at least the start of the 19th century.[2] Widely introduced in the 20th century, P. peruviana is cultivated or grows wild across the world in temperate and tropical regions.[3]

We love you, Poha. Thank you for being a wonderful dog for all these years. We will all see you again. Rest in peace until then.

A little Indian fusion: poha (flattened rice), seasoned with curry leaves, chile pepper, mustard seed, turmeric, asafoetida, onions, potato and other good stuff, baked into a cake, and topped with a fried egg. Perfect breakfast meal!

Submitting to SLW: dinner for one. When I'm home alone for dinner I often revert to breakfast. This is quick and easy to prepare for one . . .

poha is cooked with lightly frying mustard seeds, tumeric, chili powder, finely chopped onions and then moistened poha is added to the spicy mix and steamed for a few minutes. Jalebi is often eaten with poha.

Flattened rice is also a convenience food and very similar to instant mashed potatoes in uses and spirit.

Early in the morning a horse drawn carriage ( Tanga! ) drove us from our hotel to the local bus stand in Dwarka. My wife and I find traveling by an automobile bland and boring. A state road transport bus is infinitely more charming and interesting. We undertook several long distance bus journeys in Gujarat. Unlike their brethren in the North, the bus drivers of Gujarat rarely feel the urge to honk. They drive at a constant and comfortable speed. Once in a while the bus would stop at roadside tea shops serving steaming hot Ganthia, Thepla, Dhokla and Poha with six inch long fried green chillies! The view from my front seat adjoining the drivers seat was fascinating. We were traveling quite close to the coast and the shimmering waters of the sea would suddenly appear as the bus turned a bend in the road.

Poha is a rice that’s parboiled, flattened, and dried. It is white, flat, and comes in thick and thin varieties.

And I wanted to show off my new soup bowls, they are just amazing for snaps.

Holy SHABARIMALA TRIP:

lrumudi is the only travelling kit which a pilgrim carries on his head during the pilgrimage. Only those who observe fasting for 41 days are allowed to carry it. Without the Irumudi one is not allowed to step onto the holy 18 steps at the Sannidhanam.

The front portion is reserved for keeping all the puja articles and offerings to the deity.

The rear part is meant to hold the pilgrims' personal requirements for the journey.

By the 1980s, Caravelles were starting to be withdrawn in large numbers - even those that had been sold to charter operators. A number of these were stored and cannibalised at Paris Orly.

Seen out on the periphery of Paris Orly, a group of five Caravelles and a lone DC-8 have been put out to pasture!

With some strange lighting effects in evidence from my trusty Zenith camera :)

F-BHRD Caravelle III c/n 008 ex Air France

F-BHRV Caravelle III c/n 059 ex Air France

F-BYAI Caravelle VI-N c.n 139 ex Aerotour

F-BJTO Caravelle III c/n 148 ex Air Charter International

F-BOHA Caravelle III c/n 242 ex Air France

and an unidentified DC-8 ???

F-BHRD c/n 008 - Sud Aviation Caravelle III - was one of the first built Caravelles, and was delivered new to Air France in Jun 1959 and flew with the airline for its entire life of almost 21 years, being retired in Apr 1980. The aircraft was stored at Orly and broken up there some time later.

F-BHRV c/n 059 - Sud Aviation Caravelle III - was an early build Caravelle, and was delivered new to Air France in Nov 1960 and flew with the airline for its entire life of 20 years, being retired in Dec 1980. The aircraft was stored at Orly and broken up there some time later.

F-BYAI c/n 139 - Sud Aviation Caravelle VI-N - was delivered new to JAT in Jan 1963 as YU-AHA, and flew with them until being sold to Aerotour in 1978. The aircraft was withdrawn at Paris Orly in 1980, and used as a fire trainer. The aircraft survived in this state until the late 1990s before being finally broken up.

F-BJTO c/n 148 - Sud Aviation Caravelle III - was delivered new to Air France on 30th May 1963 my first birthday!! :), and flew with the airline for seven years before being sold to Air Charter International (ACI) in 1970. It flew for another ten years with ACI before retirement at Orly in Nov 1980, where at some point it was scrapped.

F-BOHA c/n 242 - Sud Aviation Caravelle III - was delivered new to Air France in Mar 1968 and flew with the airline for its entire life of just 12 years. Withdrawn at Orly in Nov 1980, the aircraft escaped the scrap man and was bought in 1981 by Chambre de Commerce et d'Industrie d'Avignon, being re-registered in 1982 as F-POHA. In 1996, the aircraft was sold to Aéroclub Vauclusien. In 2012, the aircraft was repainted in brand new old Air France livery and named 'Cpt F. Andréani'.

282 Caravelles were produced between 1955 and 1973. More information here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sud_Aviation_Caravelle
