A trio of prickly seed pods being used as bird perches at Lochwinnoch RSPB Reserve, I thought they looked wonderfully interesting enough on their own to warrant a shot without the feathery friends.
I have always enjoyed how two artists I follow, Nina Khashchina and Alissa Duke, have drawn stuff they find. So here goes. Magnolia trees in our area are putting out their seed pods these days. At first, they resemble a fuzzy, closed pine cones. Then they open and the red seeds appear. The birds love them.
Made in my Strathmore series 500 journal. 8.5 x 11 using Sharpie for the drawing and Shinhan watercolors.

i don't know what it is lately... i've always considered rings to be my favorite kind of jewel to make, but recently, it's been all about the necklaces. with dangles, apparently!
and the okra, but that's another story. one involving the garden producing such quantities of those deliciously slimy, seed-filled pods that even i am at a loss... pickled. stewed. fritters. bhindi masala. stuffed. grilled. in gumbo. ~ i've done them all, and STILL have several pounds ready to go, with the garden showing no signs of letting up. even jason is pleading for some relief! so, there is a bit of a dearth of creative okra recipes out there -well, and i realize that it is a vegetable sadly not available to everyone- but if you have a favorite, do let me know!
okay, sorry about the okra rant; don't think i'm not grateful for the bounty - i am! mmmm, okra...

ps - the elves have asked me to send their greetings, and also to say that noodle soup reinforcements would not come amiss, as i have been paying them solely in okra. i'm afraid i do not apologize.
The Project of Doom was a Harry Potter Block of the Week project that took place on Harry Potter Paper Piecing from January - August 2011. There are 30 patterns in the project and two suggested layouts.

Nicky and the girls. A shot from one of last week's encounters with Nicky's pod. Believed to be over 35 years old, Nicky is the oldest known dolphin in the Port. She lives in her natal pod with her female offspring, grandchildren and even great grandchildren. Arguably the most well known dolphin in the Port, there's always a buzz of excitement onboard when you're in Nicky's company.

After two movies and a series of Mater related short films Pixar began to tire of Larry the Cable Guy. it was decided that the best way to get rid of him would be to enter him as a racer in the Boonta Eve Classic with a custom built Mater themed podracer. Between the lack of relfex or skill from the pilot and the delibrately shoddy imagineering of the racer itself, Pixar was certain they would be rid of Larry and just in time for the "Tragedy" to boost ticket sales and start an early Oscar buzz for 2012.
After nearly a year of failed models, slowly progressing WIPs and a lack of time, inspiration and money along came the Quasi-Annual FBTB 2011 Podracer Challenge. The very thing that drew me out of my dim ages lurking around the AFOL interwebs two years ago has given me another little kick in the pants. To be honest I had no use for Cars when it came out but my 3 year old loves it and so it and the even funnier Cars Toons have grown on me. I wanted to build something my son would enjoy so I went with the two themes he'd enjoy most Cars or Ben 10. I wanted to build a racer based on Kevin Leven's car , but Odin won out and Mater it was. I was originally incorporating more greebling and colours into the Mater pod, but the boy insisted that "Mater is brown!" and how can you argue with that?
