The dwarf planet has sent a love note back to Earth via our New Horizons spacecraft, which has traveled more than 9 years and 3+ billion miles. This is the last and most detailed image of Pluto sent to Earth before the moment of closest approach - 7:49 a.m. EDT today. This same image will be released and discussed at 8 a.m. EDT today. Watch our briefing live on NASA Television at: www.nasa.gov/nasatv The high res pic will be posted on the web at: www.nasa.gov.
This stunning image of the dwarf planet was captured from New Horizons at about 4 p.m. EDT on July 13, about 16 hours before the moment of closest approach. The spacecraft was 476,000 miles (766,000 kilometers) from the surface.

This composite of enhanced color images of Pluto (lower right) and Charon (upper left), was taken by NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft as it passed through the Pluto system on July 14, 2015. This image highlights the striking differences between Pluto and Charon. The color and brightness of both Pluto and Charon have been processed identically to allow direct comparison of their surface properties, and to highlight the similarity between Charon’s polar red terrain and Pluto’s equatorial red terrain. Pluto and Charon are shown with approximately correct relative sizes, but their true separation is not to scale. The image combines blue, red and infrared images taken by the spacecraft’s Ralph/Multispectral Visual Imaging Camera (MVIC).

Voyager 2 was the first spacecraft to observe the planet Neptune. The most obvious feature of the planet is its blue color, the result of methane in the atmosphere. Can’t wait to see all of the data that New Horizons captured of Pluto! #PlutoFlyBy #tbt
**This image was taken at 3:38 a.m. EDT on July 13, one day before New Horizons’ closest approach to Pluto.**
New Horizons has obtained impressive new images of Pluto and its large moon Charon that highlight their compositional diversity. These are not actual color images of Pluto and Charon—they are shown here in exaggerated colors that make it easy to note the differences in surface material and features on each planetary body.
The images were obtained using three of the color filters of the “Ralph” instrument on July 13 at 3:38 am EDT. New Horizons has seven science instruments on board the spacecraft—including “Ralph” and “Alice”, whose names are a throwback to the “Honeymooners,” a popular 1950s sitcom.
“These images show that Pluto and Charon are truly complex worlds. There's a whole lot going on here,” said New Horizons co-investigator Will Grundy, Lowell Observatory, Flagstaff, Arizona. “Our surface composition team is working as fast as we can to identify the substances in different regions on Pluto and unravel the processes that put them where they are.”
The color data helps scientists understand the molecular make-up of ices on the surfaces of Pluto and Charon, as well as the age of geologic features such as craters. They can also tell us about surface changes caused by space “weather,” such as radiation.
The new color images reveal that the “heart” of Pluto actually consists of two remarkably different-colored regions. In the false-color image, the heart consists of a western lobe shaped like an ice cream cone that appears peach color in this image. A mottled area on the right (east) side looks bluish. A mid-latitude band appears in shades ranging from pale blue through red. Even within the northern polar cap, in the upper part of the image, various shades of yellow-orange indicate subtle compositional differences. This image was obtained using three of the color filters of the Ralph instrument on July 13 at 3:38 am EDT and received on the ground on at 12:25 pm.
Charon is Just as Colorful
The surface of Charon is viewed using the same exaggerated color. The red on the dark northern polar cap of Charon is attributed to hydrocarbon and other molecules, a class of chemical compounds called tholins. The mottled colors at lower latitudes point to the diversity of terrains on Charon. This image was obtained using three of the color filters of the Ralph instrument on July 13 at 3:38 am EDT and received on the ground on at 12:25 pm.
“We make these color images to highlight the variety of surface environments present in the Pluto system,” said Dennis Reuter, co-investigator with the New Horizons Composition Team. “They show us in an intuitive way that there is much still to learn from the data coming down.”
Due to the three-billion-mile distance to Pluto, data takes 4 ½ hours to come to Earth, even at the speed of light. It will take 16 months for all of New Horizons’ science data to be received, and the treasure trove from this mission will be studied for decades to come.
Image Caption: Pluto and Charon in False Color Show Compositional Diversity
This July 13, 2015, image of Pluto and Charon is presented in false colors to make differences in surface material and features easy to see. It was obtained by the Ralph instrument on NASA's New Horizons spacecraft, using three filters to obtain color information, which is exaggerated in the image. These are not the actual colors of Pluto and Charon, and the apparent distance between the two bodies has been reduced for this side-by-side view.
The image reveals that the bright heart-shaped region of Pluto includes areas that differ in color characteristics. The western lobe, shaped like an ice-cream cone, appears peach color in this image. A mottled area on the right (east) appears bluish. Even within Pluto's northern polar cap, in the upper part of the image, various shades of yellow-orange indicate subtle compositional differences.
The surface of Charon is viewed using the same exaggerated color. The red on the dark northern polar cap of Charon is attributed to hydrocarbon materials including a class of chemical compounds called tholins. The mottled colors at lower latitudes point to the diversity of terrains on Charon.

At 7:49 AM EDT on Tuesday, July 14 New Horizons sped past Pluto at 30,800 miles per hour (49,600 kilometers per hour), with a suite of seven science instruments. As planned, New Horizons went incommunicado as it hurtled through the Pluto-Charon system busily gathering data. The New Horizons team will breathe a sigh of relief when New Horizons “phones home” at approximately 9:02 p.m. EDT on July 14. The mission to the icy dwarf planet completes the initial reconnaissance of the solar system.

NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft has returned the best color and the highest resolution images yet of Pluto’s largest moon, Charon – and these pictures show a surprisingly complex and violent history.
At half the diameter of Pluto, Charon is the largest satellite relative to its planet in the solar system. Many New Horizons scientists expected Charon to be a monotonous, crater-battered world; instead, they’re finding a landscape covered with mountains, canyons, landslides, surface-color variations and more.
“We thought the probability of seeing such interesting features on this satellite of a world at the far edge of our solar system was low,” said Ross Beyer, an affiliate of the New Horizons Geology, Geophysics and Imaging (GGI) team from the SETI Institute and NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California, “but I couldn't be more delighted with what we see."
High-resolution images of the Pluto-facing hemisphere of Charon, taken by New Horizons as the spacecraft sped through the Pluto system on July 14 and transmitted to Earth on Sept. 21, reveal details of a belt of fractures and canyons just north of the moon’s equator. This great canyon system stretches more than 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) across the entire face of Charon and likely around onto Charon’s far side. Four times as long as the Grand Canyon, and twice as deep in places, these faults and canyons indicate a titanic geological upheaval in Charon’s past.
“It looks like the entire crust of Charon has been split open,” said John Spencer, deputy lead for GGI at the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado. “With respect to its size relative to Charon, this feature is much like the vast Valles Marineris canyon system on Mars.”
The team has also discovered that the plains south of the Charon’s canyon -- informally referred to as Vulcan Planum -- have fewer large craters than the regions to the north, indicating that they are noticeably younger. The smoothness of the plains, as well as their grooves and faint ridges, are clear signs of wide-scale resurfacing.
One possibility for the smooth surface is a kind of cold volcanic activity, called cryovolcanism. “The team is discussing the possibility that an internal water ocean could have frozen long ago, and the resulting volume change could have led to Charon cracking open, allowing water-based lavas to reach the surface at that time,” said Paul Schenk, a New Horizons team member from the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston.

On July 14, New Horizons mission scientists will soon obtain the first images of the night region of Pluto, using only the light from Charon, itself softly illuminated by a Sun 1,000 times dimmer than it is at Earth.
New Horizons scientists made this false color image of Pluto using a technique called principal component analysis to highlight the many subtle color differences between Pluto's distinct regions. The image data were collected by the spacecraft’s Ralph/MVIC color camera on July 14 at 11:11 AM UTC, from a range of 22,000 miles (35,000 kilometers). This image was presented by Will Grundy of the New Horizons’ surface composition team on Nov. 9 at the Division for Planetary Sciences (DPS) meeting of the American Astronomical Society (AAS) in National Harbor, Maryland.

Voyage to an Unexplored Planet and a New Realm
The New Horizons mission will help us understand worlds at the edge of our solar system by making the first reconnaissance of the dwarf planet Pluto and by venturing deeper into the distant, mysterious Kuiper Belt – a relic of solar system formation.
The Journey
New Horizons launched on Jan. 19, 2006; it swung past Jupiter for a gravity boost and scientific studies in February 2007, and will conduct a five-month-long reconnaissance flyby study of Pluto and its moons in summer 2015. Pluto closest approach is scheduled for July 14, 2015. As part of an extended mission, the spacecraft is expected to head farther into the Kuiper Belt to examine one or two of the ancient, icy mini-worlds in that vast region, at least a billion miles beyond Neptune’s orbit.
Sending a spacecraft on this long journey will help us answer basic questions about the surface properties, geology, interior makeup and atmospheres on these bodies.
A portrait from the final approach. Pluto and Charon display striking color and brightness contrast in this composite image from July 11, showing high-resolution black-and-white LORRI images.
This image was made just 15 minutes after New Horizons’ closest approach to Pluto on July 14, 2015, as the spacecraft looked back at Pluto toward the sun. The wide-angle perspective of this view shows the deep haze layers of Pluto's atmosphere extending all the way around Pluto, revealing the silhouetted profiles of rugged plateaus on the night (left) side. The shadow of Pluto cast on its atmospheric hazes can also be seen at the uppermost part of the disk. On the sunlit side of Pluto (right), the smooth expanse of the informally named icy plain Sputnik Planum is flanked to the west (above, in this orientation) by rugged mountains up to 11,000 feet (3,500 meters) high, including the informally named Norgay Montes in the foreground and Hillary Montes on the skyline. Below (east) of Sputnik, rougher terrain is cut by apparent glaciers.
The backlighting highlights more than a dozen high-altitude layers of haze in Pluto’s tenuous atmosphere. The horizontal streaks in the sky beyond Pluto are stars, smeared out by the motion of the camera as it tracked Pluto. The image was taken with New Horizons' Multi-spectral Visible Imaging Camera (MVIC) from a distance of 11,000 miles (18,000 kilometers) to Pluto. The resolution is 700 meters (0.4 miles).
Clouds part as NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft roars into the blue sky after an on-time liftoff at 2 p.m. EST aboard an Atlas V rocket from Complex 41 on Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.
For the first time on Pluto, this view reveals linear features that may be cliffs, as well as a circular feature that could be an impact crater.

Edited New Horizons image of part of Tombaugh Regio (the provisional name for the heart-shaped region on Pluto). The resolution isn't very good as the image was heavily compressed before New Horizons sent it to Earth. A better version will be sent sometime over the next sixteen months. The scale at the lower left is, regrettably, in miles.
Original caption: In the center left of Pluto’s vast heart-shaped feature – informally named “Tombaugh Regio” - lies a vast, craterless plain that appears to be no more than 100 million years old, and is possibly still being shaped by geologic processes. This frozen region is north of Pluto’s icy mountains and has been informally named Sputnik Planum (Sputnik Plain), after Earth’s first artificial satellite. The surface appears to be divided into irregularly-shaped segments that are ringed by narrow troughs. Features that appear to be groups of mounds and fields of small pits are also visible. This image was acquired by the Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) on July 14 from a distance of 48,000 miles (77,000 kilometers). Features as small as one-half mile (1 kilometer) across are visible. The blocky appearance of some features is due to compression of the image.

In the latest data from NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft, a new close-up image of Pluto reveals a vast, craterless plain that appears to be no more than 100 million years old, and is possibly still being shaped by geologic processes. This frozen region is north of Pluto’s icy mountains, in the center-left of the heart feature, informally named “Tombaugh Regio” (Tombaugh Region) after Clyde Tombaugh, who discovered Pluto in 1930.
“This terrain is not easy to explain,” said Jeff Moore, leader of the New Horizons Geology, Geophysics and Imaging Team (GGI) at NASA’s Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California. “The discovery of vast, craterless, very young plains on Pluto exceeds all pre-flyby expectations.”
This fascinating icy plains region -- resembling frozen mud cracks on Earth -- has been informally named “Sputnik Planum” (Sputnik Plain) after the Earth’s first artificial satellite. It has a broken surface of irregularly-shaped segments, roughly 12 miles (20 kilometers) across, bordered by what appear to be shallow troughs. Some of these troughs have darker material within them, while others are traced by clumps of hills that appear to rise above the surrounding terrain. Elsewhere, the surface appears to be etched by fields of small pits that may have formed by a process called sublimation, in which ice turns directly from solid to gas, just as dry ice does on Earth.
Scientists have two working theories as to how these segments were formed. The irregular shapes may be the result of the contraction of surface materials, similar to what happens when mud dries. Alternatively, they may be a product of convection, similar to wax rising in a lava lamp. On Pluto, convection would occur within a surface layer of frozen carbon monoxide, methane and nitrogen, driven by the scant warmth of Pluto’s interior.
Pluto’s icy plains also display dark streaks that are a few miles long. These streaks appear to be aligned in the same direction and may have been produced by winds blowing across the frozen surface.
The Tuesday “heart of the heart” image was taken when New Horizons was 48,000 miles (77,000 kilometers) from Pluto, and shows features as small as one-half mile (1 kilometer) across. Mission scientists will learn more about these mysterious terrains from higher-resolution and stereo images that New Horizons will pull from its digital recorders and send back to Earth during the next year.
The New Horizons Atmospheres team observed Pluto’s atmosphere as far as 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) above the surface, demonstrating that Pluto’s nitrogen-rich atmosphere is quite extended. This is the first observation of Pluto’s atmosphere at altitudes higher than 170 miles above the surface (270 kilometers).
The New Horizons Particles and Plasma team has discovered a region of cold, dense ionized gas tens of thousands of miles beyond Pluto -- the planet’s atmosphere being stripped away by the solar wind and lost to space.
“This is just a first tantalizing look at Pluto’s plasma environment,” said New Horizons co-investigator Fran Bagenal, University of Colorado, Boulder.
"With the flyby in the rearview mirror, a decade-long journey to Pluto is over --but, the science payoff is only beginning,” said Jim Green, director of Planetary Science at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "Data from New Horizons will continue to fuel discovery for years to come.”
Alan Stern, New Horizons principal investigator from the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), Boulder, Colorado, added, “We’ve only scratched the surface of our Pluto exploration, but it already seems clear to me that in the initial reconnaissance of the solar system, the best was saved for last."
New Horizons is part of NASA’s New Frontiers Program, managed by the agency’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland, designed, built and operates the New Horizons spacecraft and manages the mission for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate. SwRI leads the mission, science team, payload operations and encounter science planning.

Little did I know about how things would develop then:
During our holiday on Big Island / Hawai’i we met the incredibly talented Jon Lomberg and he gave us a private tour through one of his wonderful projects: #GalaxyGarden ( www.galaxygarden.net )
Jon is one of the world's most distinguished artists inspired by astronomy.
From 1972 until Carl Sagan's death in 1996, he illustrated most of Sagan's books and magazine articles, and he was Chief Artist for Sagan's classic television series. For his work on #COSMOS Jon received in 1981 a Prime Time EMMY Award for "Outstanding Individual Achievement in Creative Technical Crafts".
With the #VoyagerGoldenRecord Jon and his team have created some of the most unusual, durable, and far-flung artifacts ever produced by the human species.
The design for the cover of the Voyager Interstellar Record, predicted to last for over a thousand million years, may be the longest lived piece of human art ever made.

Meeting this great artist in person, whom I always deeply admired and whose work is breathtakingly beautiful and who is inspiring so many people all around our beautiful blue dot touched me deeply inside.
Jon’s work made history already decades ago and still is a fundamental part of #SpaceExploration of mankind.
Talking about many things like space, art and projects like his #GalaxyGarden etc. was amazing.
The latest project of Jon and his team is a crowdfunding campaign to create a self-portrait of humanity to send to the stars on NASA's #Pluto mission #NewHorizons.
This campaign is an invitation to all humans to join this amazing project and become part of our global message.

I fell in love with that campaign immediately, so after our meeting the idea of integrating the #VoyagerGoldenRecord2.0 in my design grew in me.
After completion I send my painting to Jon as I wanted to dedicate it to his project. His reply left me deeply touched and honored, reading that he loves it and would like to share it with his friends.
Like a friend lately said so perfectly:
"Heroes you admired appreciating your work…priceless."
I am delighted to say that my design now even includes a dedication of Jon himself, inviting all of us to #SpeakForEarth together.
And all of us can share our voice and thoughts and build a huge mosaic of our beautiful #BlueDot which then will be sent to #OuterSpace digitally in the near future by Jon's global team and I am curious to see how humankind defines itself these days and what kind of message we will leave in that time capsule - also for our future generations.
I feel like having received an invitaion to a #EndlessGlobalSpaceTweetup - #Spaceholix travelling through space and time TOGETHER.
So I hope YOU will join, support and share this project.

Here are the details behind my design:
COSMICCON BADGE DETAILS:
* #SPACEHOLIX #ReachingBeyondTheStars
I created this @Spaceholix logo and catchphrase for my lanyards for last years @SpacefestVI in Pasadena/ US and #AlexTweetup in Baikonur, an epic trip, where we met the generation of moonwalkers as well as the generation of #Shenanigans2009 @Astro_Alex ( #BlueDot) and @AstroSamantha ( #Futura) – the @esa astronauts who launched to #ISS together with their US and Russian crewmates last year.
#Spaceholix include ALL people sharing their love of our stars and beyond during special events as well as via Social Media - hence all of us are circling around all planets of our solar system
* LOGO IN WIDMANSTÄTTEN STRUCTURE
The Widmanstätten structure honors all #Meteorite hunters out there, especially our dear friend and speaker at @CosmicConEvent,
@GeoffNotkin, the inspiring #RockHound and host of @MeteoriteMen ( meteoritemen.com )
as well as their brand new show @MHUnlimited ( www.meteoritehuntersunlimited.com ) the world premiere of which will be shown during @CosmicConEvent.
It is because of Geoff, that I fell in love with #SpaceRocks and his exceptional way to fascinate and inspire people.
He rocks #STEM and even more #STEAM like no one else and is truly one of a kind.
* COSMICCON-ROCKET - PASSING BY ALL OUR PLANETS FROM MERKUR TO NEPTUN AND OUR EX-PLANET #PLUTO
reflecting this years #PlutoFlyBy of the #NewHorizons @NewHorizons mission
* VOYAGER GOLDEN RECORD
a message created by design director Jon Lomberg and his team sent to our stars already decades ago
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voyager_Golden_Record
* CONSTELLATION LEO
representing the name of my little one and also reflecting #LowEarthOrbit – the home of #ISS ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low_Earth_orbit" - as well as the lion in the coat of arms of England / UK – home of #CosmicCon
* CONSTELLATION DRACO
representing our #TravelBuddy and #SpaceMascot @PinkLilDragon as well as #DRAGON - the partially reusable spacecraft developed by @SpaceX, which has docked to #ISS already several times and will deliver cargo regularly
Both constellations are recurring patterns in many of my designs

For our this years #BritArmyAndFriendsReunion @CosmicConEvent in Manchester on 06./07.June 2015 I decided to proceed with my tradition of creating a special design for our group and get it printed on badges and T-Shirts being worn and shared with others and posters to be signed by all of us.

* #SPACEHOLIX #ReachingBeyondTheStars
* LOGO IN WIDMANSTÄTTEN STRUCTURE
The Widmanstätten structure honors all #Meteorite hunters out there, especially our dear friend and speaker at @CosmicConEvent,
@GeoffNotkin, the inspiring #RockHound and host of @MeteoriteMen ( meteoritemen.com )
as well as their brand new show @MHUnlimited ( www.meteoritehuntersunlimited.com ) the world premiere of which will be shown during @CosmicConEvent.
* VOYAGER GOLDEN RECORD
a message created by design director Jon Lomberg and his team sent to our stars already decades ago
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voyager_Golden_Record
* CONSTELLATION LEO
representing the name of my little one and also reflecting #LowEarthOrbit – the home of #ISS ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low_Earth_orbit" - as well as the lion in the coat of arms of England / UK – home of #CosmicCon
* CONSTELLATION DRACO
representing our #TravelBuddy and #SpaceMascot @PinkLilDragon as well as #DRAGON - the partially reusable spacecraft developed by @SpaceX, which has docked to #ISS already several times and will deliver cargo regularly
Both constellations are recurring patterns in many of my designs

I always base my designs on the event itself and around major space events happening in the respective year.
So the choice this year was really easy ;-)
I dedicated my design for @CosmicCon to THE space event in 2015:
the #PlutoFlyBy of #NewHorizons mission, where a manmade probe will pass #Pluto and leave our solar system and fly through space and time into #OuterSpace.

Annotation by NASA.

* #SPACEHOLIX #ReachingBeyondTheStars
* LOGO IN WIDMANSTÄTTEN STRUCTURE
The Widmanstätten structure honors all #Meteorite hunters out there, especially our dear friend and speaker at @CosmicConEvent,
@GeoffNotkin, the inspiring #RockHound and host of @MeteoriteMen ( meteoritemen.com )
as well as their brand new show @MHUnlimited ( www.meteoritehuntersunlimited.com ) the world premiere of which will be shown during @CosmicConEvent.
* VOYAGER GOLDEN RECORD
a message created by design director Jon Lomberg and his team sent to our stars already decades ago
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voyager_Golden_Record
* CONSTELLATION LEO
representing the name of my little one and also reflecting #LowEarthOrbit – the home of #ISS ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low_Earth_orbit" - as well as the lion in the coat of arms of England / UK – home of #CosmicCon
* CONSTELLATION DRACO
representing our #TravelBuddy and #SpaceMascot @PinkLilDragon as well as #DRAGON - the partially reusable spacecraft developed by @SpaceX, which has docked to #ISS already several times and will deliver cargo regularly
Both constellations are recurring patterns in many of my designs

* #SPACEHOLIX #ReachingBeyondTheStars
* LOGO IN WIDMANSTÄTTEN STRUCTURE
The Widmanstätten structure honors all #Meteorite hunters out there, especially our dear friend and speaker at @CosmicConEvent,
@GeoffNotkin, the inspiring #RockHound and host of @MeteoriteMen ( meteoritemen.com )
as well as their brand new show @MHUnlimited ( www.meteoritehuntersunlimited.com ) the world premiere of which will be shown during @CosmicConEvent.
* VOYAGER GOLDEN RECORD
a message created by design director Jon Lomberg and his team sent to our stars already decades ago
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voyager_Golden_Record
* CONSTELLATION LEO
representing the name of my little one and also reflecting #LowEarthOrbit – the home of #ISS ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low_Earth_orbit" - as well as the lion in the coat of arms of England / UK – home of #CosmicCon
* CONSTELLATION DRACO
representing our #TravelBuddy and #SpaceMascot @PinkLilDragon as well as #DRAGON - the partially reusable spacecraft developed by @SpaceX, which has docked to #ISS already several times and will deliver cargo regularly

(Just typing this gives me goosebumps)

* #SPACEHOLIX #ReachingBeyondTheStars
* LOGO IN WIDMANSTÄTTEN STRUCTURE
The Widmanstätten structure honors all #Meteorite hunters out there, especially our dear friend and speaker at @CosmicConEvent,
@GeoffNotkin, the inspiring #RockHound and host of @MeteoriteMen ( meteoritemen.com )
as well as their brand new show @MHUnlimited ( www.meteoritehuntersunlimited.com ) the world premiere of which will be shown during @CosmicConEvent.
* VOYAGER GOLDEN RECORD
a message created by design director Jon Lomberg and his team sent to our stars already decades ago
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voyager_Golden_Record
* CONSTELLATION LEO
representing the name of my little one and also reflecting #LowEarthOrbit – the home of #ISS ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low_Earth_orbit" - as well as the lion in the coat of arms of England / UK – home of #CosmicCon
* CONSTELLATION DRACO
representing our #TravelBuddy and #SpaceMascot @PinkLilDragon as well as #DRAGON - the partially reusable spacecraft developed by @SpaceX, which has docked to #ISS already several times and will deliver cargo regularly
Both constellations are recurring patterns in many of my designs
