Early last year, I mentioned to someone I knew that I have a great liking for really well done cover versions of songs. In reply, he sent me a list of his favourite twenty cover versions of songs, performed by a variety of artists.

Last September, I noticed I still had that list, and as I looked at the song titles on it, I suddenly thought, wouldn't it be fun to try to interpret each song title on that list into a photo for my Flickr?

I started taking the photos last September. I've been busy since then, so it took me a while to complete the list, and I've only just done it. But now it's finished, I'll gradually post each of the song playlist photos here in order.

The second song on the list was Yesterday, a cover of the Beatles classic, performed oh-so-smoothly by the incredible Marvin Gaye.

As you can see, instead of trying to represent the lyrics of the song, I pretty much just interpreted the song title, Yesterday, by going retro.

I know the 80s isn't the same era as the song, but I must admit, I was digging the 80s look. It was fun to do.

On the road today :o) It's been a LONG time since I've had time to just sit and listen to music... and oh how I miss it!! I listen to a crazy mix... I think everyone I've ever talked to about music hates something on my list of favorites. Then again, they usually like something too. This is an incomplete list of artists I listen to...

The Skull Rock Nature Loop passes through a maze of spectacular rock formations and luxuriant washes. Rock in this area began as liquid molten deep below the earth's surface. Continuously heated by movements in the Earth's crust, this molten oozed upward and cooled while still below the surface. Subsequent surface layer erosion exposed the rock, a form of granite called Monzogranite.

This nature loop offers excellent views of the east valley of Pinto Basin and sport some diverse vegetation and wildlife provided by the many standing pools of water in the recesses of the rock formations.

A musical night winterland holiday scene, Mojave style, located in El Dorado Canyon in Nevada, with a rather weathered piano for accompaniment. After two long years, my night photography friends and I got together for an eight-night trip to Nevada and California. This was a 1856-mile night photography safari with Tim Little, Mike Cooper, and George Loo, and George the monkey. Illuminated during the exposure by a full moon and a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device. Thank you.

I don't often get the chance to sit and watch people but today I parked my chair near a window seat of a coffee shop after work and spent a good 45 minutes just listening to music and watching the variety of people going by. It started to drizzle rain and it was the perfect addition to my people watching, puddles and drips and umbrellas.

What exactly was I listening to? Well, I tend to listen to an eclectic mix of music, when I'm running it's usually fast-tempo top 40 stuff but for times like today when I'm feeling mellow or calm I listen to the following artists:

I'm a Spotify Premium member, and today I found an e-mail that invited me to take a look at my year of music in one fancy multimedia style review. (I don't know if the experience is available to free Spotify users, it might be.)

As part of that review, Spotify offered me a custom playlist that includes my Top 100 songs from 2019. The songs I played the most, the songs I enjoyed the most. Some because they lifted me up, others because they got stuck in my head, and others still because they helped me through something

The song above was my #1 for 2019! But guess what? I discovered that I could make the whole playlist public.

So here you go: Gavin's Top Songs 2019, according to my Spotify listening history. One hundred songs, six hours of tunes.

Both versions of the song sound happy and upbeat when you listen to them, thanks to the talent and tone of the performers, but when I looked at the lyrics written on a page, without the music, they seemed to me to be rather dark, particularly if one focuses on the verses. To sum the song up, the writer of the song didn't seem to care about the girl he's singing to (and said he didn't want her around), until he saw her happy with someone else, then he started following her around town and obsessing about her, because he is now jealous. He can't let her be happy with someone else. He's getting possessive and asking her to leave her new beau, to come back to him. It seems a little creepy, despite the singer's sweet protestations of love in the choruses.

So that was why my take on such a happy-sounding little song resulted in a rather dark-looking photo. The girl has noticed she is being followed around town by her ex. You can see the shadow of her follower on the ground, looming. Her hand is clenched into a fist. She found happiness, finally, with a new guy, so why won't her old beau go away and let her be? Why does he only seem to want what he can't have, when he can't have it?

Here's a classic California sunset taken a couple of miles from my home. I remember back to when I shot this one, I had an errand to run and I wasn't sure if I was going to be back to the house by sunset so I had brought my camera pack with me. Unfortunately, I spaced out and left my tripod at the house (classic newbie mistake) so I sat the camera on the roof of my car on a mini tripod that I had in the side pouch of my camera pack then used a flashlight from my glove box with an AM/PM soda cup over the end of it to light the lime trees in the foreground. I added some more green coloring to the foreground to help complete the rainbow of colors. :)
