As the great artists do, I try to use plastic on a small scale to point out environmental pollution

This is a close-up photo of water droplets on a perforated plastic film that had covered a package of fresh strawberries. I held it in front of an acrylic abstract painting.
Monoprint of black aqua linoleum color on a glass plate, textured by a thin plastic film (PP), shrunk by the heat of a lighter. I also did some prints of the film, but they weren't as good as I wanted them to be, so I had to improve the process by fixing the film on an adhesive foil, to preserve the wrikles and drapes. That worked.

TED: "I'm off on me holibobs agane in a coupla days, so today I decided to have a bit of a spa day. First of all I rubbed body loshun in all me dry crinkly bits an' then I rapped cling film all over me an' laid down fer a bit. It's called a 'hydrating body wrap' an' I'm s'posed to feel all nice an' smooth afterwards. Mum sez she'll Febreze me later *shudders* an' then I'll be all reddy to fly to the sun!"
Cascelloid Ltd had an interesting history being formed in 1919 by one Alfred Edward Pallett in Leicester and they used the relatively new 'plastics' technology to produce a range of dolls and toys as well as moving into packaging and plastic films. The company prospered and despite a fire in 1927 they were acquired by the major plastics concern of British Xylonite in 1931.
The toys side of the business was relaunched in 1935 under the name of Palitoy (as it Pallett-toy) and in 1968 this division was sold to General Mills and, after Palitoy who had become 'independent' again ceased trading in 1986 the rights were purchased by Hasbro. The film and packaging side, as seen here carried on after the BXL merger in 1963. Indeed I think 'Cascelloid' as a product brand may even still be going today.
The "famous firm" who used their packaging was H S Whiteside & Co Ltd who themselves had an interesting history. Formed in 1925 as Gilbert Ltd they processed various foodstuffs, especially dried fruit and nuts, and had factories in London and Lancashire. They trademarked the once famous "Sunpat" name after WW2 and in later years they expanded buying names such as Elizabeth Shaw chocolates and Maconochie Brothers who manufactured PanYan pickle. In the 1950s they moved into 'branded' snacks as seen here with companies such as Huntley & Palmer and Marmite.
In 1965 a serious stock accounting error was found and the company, effectively, collapsed. Rowntree's bought the Sun-Pat and Maconochies brands and Whiteside's were liquidated in 1967.
The packaging seen here was aimed at the over the counter snack market, and would have been sold in a wide range of newsagents, sweet shops, cinemas and licensed premises. Visibility and freshness was key and these polythene packets allowed for just that, with the benefit that the 'lay-flat' bags could be displayed and sold from die-cut cardboard display cards.

Write me a song called "The Building is from 1959." No don't.
The teal panels and the pale green glazed bricks and the rounded corners of selected windows are attractive even yet. The awful plastic films on the windows are very unattractive, really really bad-looking.
The venetian blinds and vents and air conditioner are neither attractive nor unattractive.

MB puzzle from 1968. B848. Made in U.S.A.
Bought in Sweden 1975. My very first art puzzle of good quality. I had bought some Philmar puzzles earlier but the quality of the MB pieces stunned me. I have done it several times over the years and the box, not glossed, shows sign of wear. It's been with me for over 40 years and will always be a favorite.
These days I always wrap my boxes in plasticfilm.
