Medano Creek seasonally flows on the south side of the dune field at Great Sand Dunes National Park. By early August when I visited, it was near the end of its active season.

Note: Due to the severe dysfunction of our national politics, some national park services are currently unavailable. During the government shutdown, Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve will remain open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, as it always is. However, the visitor center and entrance station will remain closed and no visitor services will be available.

I decided to look at my digital archives, to recover and reprocess some old straight-out-of the point and shoot camera jpgs.

I'll post one picture every thursday, with the motto "Great places, bad cameras"

Note the restrictions in effect for 2020:

Viewing Horsetail Fall in Late February

"Due to the popularity of the event, restrictions will be in effect from February 14 through 27, 2020 daily from noon to 7 pm. To view Horsetail Fall, park at Yosemite Falls parking (just west of Yosemite Valley Lodge) and walk 1.5 miles (each way) to the viewing area near El Capitan Picnic Area."

Why?

"February 22, 2019, over 2,000 visitors viewing Horsetail Fall... spilled onto riverbanks, increasing erosion and trampling vegetation... undeveloped areas became littered with trash..."

The D. H. Day farm, comprised of 400 acres, was also known as "Oswegatchi" after the New York community where his father was born and the Oswegatchi River where D. H. Day played as a boy.

Day grew hay and corn to feed his 400 hogs and prize herd of 200 Holsteins. The farm is just south of Glen Haven and has a large white barn and several out-buildings that stand as a landmark of the agricultural heritage of this area. The buildings were built in the 1880s and 1890s.

The Bass Harbor Head Light Station is located in Tremont, Maine, marking the entrance to Bass Harbor and Blue Hill Bay on the southwest corner of Mount Desert Island. Among about 80 lighthouses across Maine, it is one of three lights managed by Acadia National Park, including two others on Baker Island and Bear Island. It appeared on the America the Beautiful quarter in 2012, the NPS centennial postage stamp in 2016, and was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

Death Valley National Park, CA. Ubehebe and other nearby craters are known as Maar volcanoes, created by steam and gas explosions when hot magma rising up from the depths reached ground water. The intense heat flashed the water into steam which expanded until the pressure was released as a tremendous explosion. The western cluster of maar volcanoes was the first to form, then the southern cluster, followed by Ubehebe—the largest of them all—possibly as recently as 2,100 years ago.

This was a wonderful dawn hike and worth the one hour drive from Texas Spring Campground where I was staying. I also hiked Fall Canyon on my return trip to the campground.

Taken in the early morning while hiking the Badlands, Golden Canyon and Gower Gulch Loop, starting at Zabriskie Point. Including the side trip to Red Cathedral, it is ~7.8 miles.

An early start (right after photographing sunrise at Zabriskie Point) made for beautiful light and uncrowded trails. Several times during my stay, I noticed the Golden Canyon trailhead parking lot was full to overflowing in mid-afternoon.

For those interested in doing this hike, it is described including a detailed map at www.nps.gov/deva/planyourvisit/golden-canyon.htm.

This was one of our stops. The 1932 Studebaker commemorating a stretch of the original Route 66 that used to run through here. This is just north of the I-40 and the divide of the Park between the Painted Desert and the Petrified Forest.

I didn't realize this was such a bad neighborhood. Park your car outside overnight and they steal the tires right from under you. :)

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petrified_Forest_National_Park

Petrified Forest National Park is a national park of the United States in Navajo and Apache counties in northeastern Arizona. Named for its large deposits of petrified wood, the park covers about 346 square miles (900 square kilometers), encompassing semi-desert shrub steppe as well as highly eroded and colorful badlands. The park's headquarters is about 26 miles (42 km) east of Holbrook along Interstate 40 (I-40), which parallels the BNSF Railway's Southern Transcon, the Puerco River, and historic U.S. Route 66, all crossing the park roughly east–west. The site, the northern part of which extends into the Painted Desert, was declared a national monument in 1906 and a national park in 1962. The park received 644,922 recreational visitors in 2018.

The Petrified Forest is known for its fossils, especially fallen trees that lived in the Late Triassic Epoch, about 225 million years ago. The sediments containing the fossil logs are part of the widespread and colorful Chinle Formation, from which the Painted Desert gets its name. Beginning about 60 million years ago, the Colorado Plateau, of which the park is part, was pushed upward by tectonic forces and exposed to increased erosion. All of the park's rock layers above the Chinle, except geologically recent ones found in parts of the park, have been removed by wind and water. In addition to petrified logs, fossils found in the park have included Late Triassic ferns, cycads, ginkgoes, and many other plants as well as fauna including giant reptiles called phytosaurs, large amphibians, and early dinosaurs. Paleontologists have been unearthing and studying the park's fossils since the early 20th century.
