This widespread and undemanding tree is more rounded the more isolated it stands.

A beautiful name for a beautiful bird.

This was my second of the spring.

One of over 50 species of New World Warbler living in North America, the Pine Warbler (Setophaga pinus) is not often seen far from pine trees. It does, after all, dine primarily on their seeds and pine-loving insects. It will also nest in pines, typically at the ends of branches high off the ground. And because of its penchant for seedy foods, it is one of the only warblers that will occasionally visit bird feeders!

Pinus species are trees or, less often, bushes. The wood, the bark, the leaves shaped as needles and often also the cones form resin channels. The trunk is monopodial, so it goes through from the base to the tip.

Because it winters in the southeast U.S.--never leaving for the Caribbean or South America like most other warblers--the Pine Warbler (Setophaga pinus) is one of the first to return to the northeast during spring migrations. In the winter, migratory pine warblers join forces with pine warblers that never leave the southeast, often forming flocks up to 100 birds deep. Quite a sight! Also, these are seed-eating warblers, though one could never call them vegan. They eat pine seeds during cold winter months, but--alas--during the summer months of plenty, they feast greedily on caterpillars and other insects like any other respectable warbler.

Die Samenzapfen der Kiefer sind gestielt und stehen einzeln oder häufiger in Gruppen nahe den Enden der Triebe.

The seed cones of the pine are stalked and stand individually or more often in groups near the ends of the shoots.
