Pilots cottages on Llanddwyn. The pilots also manned the lifeboat station which was later run by the RNLI. A small light was established in 1823 by the Caernarfon Harbour Trustees as a navigational aid for entering the Menai Straits and Caernarfon harbour.

These aircraft were used to deliver and collect secret agents into France during WW2. The bravery of the pilots, landing in the dead of night, in a field lit only by a few torches, is something I can't even begin to understand. Every landing could have been an ambush. The courage of the people they were transporting is on another level - beyond my comprehension. It throws our day-to-day travails into sharp perspective.

"Pilot Peak is a striking pinnacle in the immediate northeast of Yellowstone National Park. It is part of the volcanic Absaroka Range which forms the massive eastern escarpment of Yellowstone Plateau. It's sharp point made it an unforgettable landmark.

Pilot Peak proved invaluable to pioneers of the Greater Yellowstone region since they, along with the nearby Tetons, mark the boundaries of the steaming plateau known as Colter's Hell. The Washburn expedition in 1870, credited with 'discovering' Yellowstone Park, used Pilot Peak to guide them to the rim of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and the incredible Geyser Basins beyond."

Thanks for taking a look!

The row of four small cottages on Llanddwyn Island was built for the pilots who helped boats navigate into the ports along the Menai Strait. This narrow channel dividing Anglesey from the Welsh mainland posed a threat of grounding on sand banks to the boats calling mainly at the ports of Caernarfon, Y Felinheli and Bangor to collect the fine roofing slate produced in the hills of North Wales. As well as guiding commercial shipping, the pilots crewed the Llanddwyn lifeboat until its wathdrawal from service in 1903.

The pilots resided here and met sailing ships that were heading up the Menai Straits.

Great in the Summer, but a nightmare in the Winter months I would have thought if you personally know the Menai Straits.

Nice storm brewing over our rented cottage in the far distance...good move coming here l'd say. :-)

These are Short-finned Pilot Whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) messing about in a large pod off Baja. They are very deep diving whales so quite difficult to catch at the surface. There were about forty whales in this pod doing lots of spyhopping and tail-lobbing. I think there is a third animal visible here in front of the spyhopper. They are often found in large groups and are called Pilot Whales because they were believed to be piloted by a leader. The phrase "drop the pilot" means to abandon an untrustworthy or incompetent leader but it was also a 1983 single for Joan Armatrading.

a 'pod', sorry about the quality of these pilot whales ....rocky boat !

TOWERS and RAMPARTS of AIGUES - MORTES :

Built at the peak of Gothic architecture , the fortifications of Aigues - Mortes is a remarkably well preserved military stucture .

The ribbed vaults on the carved capitals , the gargoyles , the refined decor of the Tower of Constance , in contrast to the power of the defensive system of the curtains walls .

From the ramparts or from the dungeons ' terrace , you will discover a breath taking sight on the Camargue and the salt marshes whose colours alternate between blue and purple ...

Paul Bonhomme taxis Spitfire Ia N3200 at Duxford. The aircraft is a geniune combat veteran and was shot down near Calais on 26th May 1940 while flying in support of the Dunkirk evacuation. She remained there until being rediscovered in 1986, eventually making her way back to the UK in 2007. A full restoration was conducted by Historic Flying Limited at Duxford and she made her first post restoration flight on 26th March 2014.
