A brisk winter sprint up to the Pigeon Tower at Rivington to catch the dying light after a visit to family in Bolton.
I just made it before the light completely went. I forgot how many steps there are on the way up to this point. Not bad for a bit of Winter aerobic training! I can still feel the lung and leg burn looking at this shot!!
The Pigeon Tower on Rivington Pike was built in 1910. The lower two floors were used to house doves and pigeons, the top floor provides a small living area.

Willem Marinus Dudok (6 July 1884 – 6 April 1974) was a Dutch modernist architect. He was born in Amsterdam. He became City Architect for the town of Hilversum in 1928 where he was best known for the brick Hilversum Town Hall, completed in 1931.Not only did he design the building, but also the interior including the carpets, furniture and even the mayor's meeting hammer. He also designed and built about 75 houses, public buildings and entire neighborhoods.

Pigeonholes in a pigeonhouse in Yazd, Iran. People used to build these pigeonhouses to collect their droppings, which were then used as manure.

De Duiventoren is een van de twee zevenhoekige torens behorende bij het Kasteel van Breda. Deze torens, de Duiventoren en de Granaattoren, liggen aan het Spanjaardsgat, dicht bij de haven in het centrum van Breda en zijn de enige resten van de versterkingen die in 1530 door Hendrik III van Nassau aan de reeds bestaande vestingwerken werden toegevoegd.
Het recht was een feodaal recht om duiven te mogen houden en was voorbehouden aan de adel en de geestelijkheid. De duiventoren heeft deze functie al lang verloren. Tussen 1903 en 1910 is ze gerestaureerd, waarbij ook het bolletje op de toren is geplaatst. (Wikipedia)

THE JAPANESE GARDENS CREATED IN THE 1920’S BY LORD LEVERHULME. THE GARDEN AND STREAM ARE OFTEN LABELLED AS THE CHINESE GARDENS, BUT THERE IS NOTHING CHINESE ABOUT THEM.
JAPANESE GARDENS WERE IN FASHION AT THE TIME, SO LORD LEVERHULME DECIDED TO HAVE ONE HIMSELF. THE CHINESE TAG HAS STUCK OVER TIME BUT IT IS A JAPANESE GARDEN ENVISAGED BY BRITISH DESIGNERS.

The Dovecote Tower, commonly known as the Pigeon Tower, stands at the northwestern edge of the Terraced Gardens.
Italian in style, the Tower was built in 1910 by Lord Leverhulme as part of his extensive Rivington estate.
The first two floors were home to ornamental doves and pigeons, whilst at the top was a small sitting room that was used as a lookout over the boating lake, and by Lady Lever as a sewing and music room.
The three floors are linked by a solid stone staircase that runs up the semi-circular spine of the building.
On rare occasions when the metal barricaded door allows access, one can still see in the top room the ornate fireplace engraved with the initials of William Heskth and Elizabeth Ellen Lever running in a circular wheel above the family motto, MUTARE VEL TIMERE SPERNO - "To change or to fear I spurn".
Over recent years the Tower has had its floors renovated in 1974, and its roof replaced in 2005.

A return to some HDR work for me, have to admit I've missed this stuff but don't often get the chance to do it anymore.
These were taken on a much need day off and a long walk up Rivington with my wife. The light was kinda weird with a low sun so options were limited to which angle I could attack these from but think they turned out OK :)
