Occasionally, dark spots freckle the face of the Sun. These are sunspots, cooler regions on the Sun caused by a concentration of magnetic field lines. Sunspots are the visible component of active regions, areas of intense and complex magnetic fields on the Sun that are the source of solar eruptions. Sunspots can be seen on the Sun’s photosphere, or visible surface of the Sun.

Lindau is a major town and an island on the eastern side of Lake Constance.

It is the capital of the Landkreis or county Lindau, Bavaria, and located near the borders of Austria and Switzerland.

In 1856 a new harbour was built, with its characteristic landmarks, the lion sculpture and Bavaria's only lighthouse.

The active region 3363, made up of nine sunspots at the time of this capture, has crossed the solar disk in recent days. This image corresponds to July 16, under conditions of great atmospheric turbulence (after many days of clouds and rain), the day it reached a size of 720 millionths of a hemisphere, which is equivalent to more than four times the size of the disk of the Land. The active region reached an even larger size around July 12 when it reached five terrestrial disks.

Sunspots are structures generated by the solar magnetic field. The darkest part (towards the center of the active region) is called the umbra, while the gray area that surrounds it is the penumbra. These are regions colder than the temperature of the photosphere.

These images are taken in white light, using my Maksutov-Cassegrain 127mm, f/15 telescope, Meade SF 575 Solar Filter, Player One Neptune-M Camera, and a Player One IR685 filter.

The red solar prominences become visible during a total solar eclipse thanks to the Moon covering the bright part of the Sun (called the photosphere).

Third image in my Horicon Marsh Magic series...

I told you that today's post would be a banger!

They tell photographers to never point your lens to the sun unless you have a dark sun filter on it. That is very good advice as it is blinding to our human eyes, especially when magnified.

The mists were heavy the morning we visited this vast wetland, so heavy in fact that we could not see the sun for 10 minutes after it rose. That natural filter allowed me to get some good captures of the sun without fear of blinding my right eye.

Check out those 10 or so sunspots clearly visible on the sun's surface here. Those spots can be from 10,000 to 100,000 miles across in size! And while 'cooler' than the surrounding sun surface around them (10,000 deg. f.) due to intense magnetic activity, they are still incredibly hot at around 6,500 deg. fahrenheit.

A sunspot is a relatively long-lasting feature, often visible for days or even weeks as it rotates with the sun. They appear as dark, well-defined spots on the sun's photosphere (its visible surface). They appear dark because they are cooler than the surrounding area, but they are still incredibly hot. Sunspots are a stable, magnetic phenomenon, and their size and shape can change gradually over time.

Bailey's Beads and Chromasphere during the total Solar Eclipse 2024. The rugged topography of the lunar limb allows beads of sunlight to shine through in some places while not in others. They are named for Francis Baily, who explained the effects in 1836. Observers in the path of totality of a solar eclipse see first a gradual covering of the Sun by the lunar silhouette for just a small duration of time from around one minute to four minutes, followed by the diamond ring effect (visible without filters) as the last bit of photosphere disappears. As the burst of light from the ring fades, Baily's beads appear as the last bits of the bright photosphere shine through valleys aligned at the edge of the Moon. As the Baily's beads disappear behind the advancing lunar edge (the beads also reappear at the end of totality), a thin reddish edge called the chromosphere (the Greek chrÅma meaning "color") appears. Though the reddish hydrogen radiation is most visible to the unaided eye, the chromosphere also emits thousands of additional spectral lines. -Wikipedia

#macromondays #granules

I decided to share this image for the upcoming #macromondays theme called #granules

Himalayan salt, often called pink salt, is a type of rock salt mined from the Salt Range mountains in Pakistan, particularly near the Khewra Salt Mine. It's famous for its distinctive pink color, which comes from trace minerals like magnesium, potassium, and calcium.

Here are a few quick facts:

Uses: Commonly used in cooking, as bath salts, or in salt lamps for decorative and claimed therapeutic purposes.

Health claims: Some believe it has detoxifying or respiratory benefits, but scientific evidence is limited.

Flavor: Slightly milder than regular table salt, with a unique mineral

Granules are small particles or grains that typically range in size from very fine to coarse. They can occur naturally or be manufactured and are often used to describe materials that are solid, dry, and granular in texture.

Granules In Different Contexts:

Biology / Cell Biology:

Granules are small structures within cells, often involved in storage or secretion of substances.

Examples: Secretory granules in glands, granules in platelets (important for blood clotting), or cytoplasmic granules.

Pharmaceuticals:

Granules refer to a dosage form made of aggregated powdered ingredients.

They improve flowability, compressibility, and can be used for sustained release medications.

Food Industry:

Granules can refer to coarse grains of salt, sugar, coffee (like instant coffee), or seasoning mixes.

They often dissolve easily in water and are used for quick preparation.

Geology:

Refers to a specific particle size category of sediment, typically between sand and pebbles (~2–4 mm).

Found in riverbeds, beaches, and sedimentary rocks.

Astronomy:

Granules on the Sun are convection cells visible on its surface (photosphere).

They appear as bright areas with darker edges, caused by the movement of hot plasma.

His Majesty's Theatre is The largest theatre in the north east of Scotland. It is sited on Rosemount Viaduct opposite Union Terrace Gardens. St Mark's church is next door and then the central library. The Theatre can seat more than 1.400 and was designed by Frank Matcham and opened in 1906.

One of the many things I wanted to do while at Moraine Lake was to head up to the rockpile and take in that vista view looking across the waters to the mountain peaks surrounding this beautiful valley. With the low clouds and overcast skies, I found the colors to be slightly muted, but I was able to bring out a more vibrant look using Capture NX2 and then Nik's Color Efex Pro 4 for the final image. I found cropping a portion of the foreground also helped to bring out that vista and panoramic feel.

If you want to be more immersed in the experience of being at Moraine Lake with this view, I also captured a 360°'s photosphere of this location using my iPhone (goo.gl/maps/PcMN5vecVa52).

Sunspots are temporary phenomena on the photosphere of the Sun that appear visibly as dark spots compared to surrounding regions. They correspond to concentrations of magnetic field that inhibit convection and result in reduced surface temperature compared to the surrounding photosphere. Sunspots usually appear as pairs, with each spot having the opposite magnetic polarity of the other
