The end product, 5’ samples of “relatively” undisturbed saprolite! Here are the first two samples extracted from the hole. They are laid on the table in the shade. The samples are encased in plastic tubing. The glare on the plastic makes it very difficult to see the samples inside in this image. The tubes are sealed shut with duct tape and caps to prevent water from evaporating. One thing that we want to know is how much water can this material hold and how much was in it at the time we sample it. To estimate the amount of water in the lab we will weigh the samples prior to the water evaporating. We then put the samples in an oven to dry them out. After they are dry we re-weight them. The difference in weight was all due to water. A professor at Dickinson college will then take the samples and look at geochemistry, in other words what minerals make up the sample. These samples are hard to get but will tell us so much about how water moves through it as well as how that water moving through it has changed the solid granite into the material we have sampled.

The review method assists our editors to make a decision on what to publish and how to publish, and it assures that the excellence and reliability of the papers and of the journal itself. The reviewer must recognize any fault in the paper and offer useful advice to the authors so that they can progress their work before publication. Other researchers in the field of research offer this service to you when they review papers you have written, and as a great knowledged member of the scientific research community, every researcher should respond by reviewing the research papers in return. Additionally, peer review can offer another reimbursement such as keeping you on current progress in the field of research and awareness of the latest research consequences before they are published.

Pain: Inside the Metaphor (2014) is a new series of images made as part of the Pain:

speaking the threshold project, which builds on a previous project face2face.

Face2face was a collaboration between myself (artist, Slade School of Fine Art) and

Prof Joanna Zakrzewska (facial pain specialist, UCLH) and patients and clinicians

from UCLH, which explored the value of images in the diagnosis and management of

chronic pain. Pain is notoriously difficult to communicate and the face2face project

researched whether visual images of pain could impact on the quality of verbal

dialogue around pain in the consulting room. Could the images elicit aspects of pain

often omitted from medical dialogue which so often resist capture through measures

such as describe your pain on a scale from one to ten? It explored this through a

number of routes, one of which was the co-creation of photographic images with

facial pain patients from UCLH which aimed to reflect their individual experience of

pain. The photographs were made during one to one workshops with myself at three

points during their treatment journey – before, during and after management.

Images selected from those made by five different patients during this part of the

project were then integrated with images made during an earlier project perceptions

of pain and used to develop an image resource for use by other pain patients and

clinicians who had not been involved in making the images. The visual resource has

been piloted in consultations with ten different experts at UCLH as a new

communication tool and the findings are being analysed by a multi-disciplinary team

as part of Pain: speaking the threshold. This photograph co-created by myself and

a facial pain patient with Trigeminal Neuralgia awaiting surgery, Alison Glenn,

functions both as a metaphor for the quality of pain and its emotional impact but also

suggests the anticipated capacity of the surgeon’s knife to heal. The photograph is

layered on top of one taken recently with a microscope (magnification 64) of the

inside of a strawberry. One of the aims of this series is to question the ways in which

we understand what is inside someone else’s description of pain.

Both projects rely on the generosity and creativity of the participating patients and

clinicians.

This is a picture of the cap that is attached to the end of the sampling pipe. In this photo, it is filled with material because it was just removed from the end of the sampling pipe from the 4th picture in the series. There is a sharp edge around this cap, which cuts the ground and forces the material into the sampling pipe, which contains the sampling tube. The geoprobe (machine we used) uses hydraulics to push the sampling pipe through the unaugered ground. In an ideal world, sharp edge on on the end of the sampling pipe cuts the material and and as it’s pushed deeper into the ground undisturbed material slips right up the pipe into our plastic sample tube. In reality, the pipe catches small stones or hard material that might compact or even impede our ability to push and collect a sample. In this image you can see the material we are pushing through. We call it saprolite, which is essentially weathered granite. You can see there is fine grained material and large feldspar crystals (pink pebbles) intact from the original granite. I poured some water on top of this material and it flowed through. So although this looks hard, it is actually porous and permeable.

The bit goes on the end of the augering pipe. The bit diameter is a little under 4”. As the material is scraped and loosened by the bit, the augering pipe transports the loosened material to the ground surface where it is shoveled away by a person. The loose dirt removed from the hole is kept in a pile and used to refill the hole when we are done. The bit is hollow in the middle because to extract “relatively” undisturbed samples we use a smaller diameter pipe that goes through the center of the auger pipe to where we stopped drilling with the bit. We use a smaller (2”) diameter pipe with an open end and push material into a collection the tube. Once our samples are collected, we continue to auger using through the sample region. We then repeat the process in 5’ (1.4 m) increments.

Under the shade of the tent samples are inspected and most importantly logged. Notes are taken about the depth each sample came from and initial observations are noted. Observations range from the color of the core, to moisture build up on the tube to anything strange that happened during the acquisition. During this process, the plastic tubes that contain the samples are labeled. The arrow in this picture represent the direction to the ground surface. it is important to know which way is up so that we can reconstruct the subsurface of the earth using our 5’ samples. Since everything we do now days happens on the computer, the notes will be digitized later either by scanning them or by typing them up into a Word or Excel document.
