Mr Wilson says the first target is to tackle the rat, stoat and weasel numbers at Victoria Domain and the Snout. Three different types of traps will be laid – each of them designed to avoid larger animals.The team of volunteers who have joined Picton Dawn Chorus will check the traps regularly. Pest control will then extend to the Wedge, the hills surrounding Picton and to residential gardens.

September 1 2016 - Broom gall mite; a heavily galled broom bush at a release site in the Awatere Valley.
Council’s biosecurity team is at the forefront of the battle against the invasive species which are not welcome in our district.
A key priority is keeping watch for those species not in Marlborough but considered to be a real threat to the district (e.g. wallabies). The team has the job of managing those invasive species that have been found in a very few locations (like aquatic pest plant parrot’s feather) and where there is still a chance of stamping them out. This work is often unseen but that is a sign of success to the biosecurity team! The team also has a compliance role, helping landowners manage the continuing work required to control regulated pest species like nassella tussock.
An important part of the biosecurity team’s role is finding ways to control Marlborough’s well-established weeds and council invests in biological control agents as part of that work. Some have been released and are doing very well (e.g. ragwort flea beetle), with others in the pipeline but still undergoing rigorous testing – including agents for old man’s beard. A gall mite for broom is showing real promise and is now spreading rapidly.
The biosecurity team also provides support to the very successful Marlborough Sounds Restoration Trust wilding pine control programme and the Grovetown Lagoon Restoration Project. Currently, council is looking at ways to become more involved in supporting communities to tackle issues in their own patch.

In 2015, the use of a surfactant in yellowjacket traps was investigated to determine if this would enhance trap catches. Surfactants, such as soap, break the surface tension of liquids. For yellowjacket traps, this means that insects land on the liquid bait and sink with only a drop of soap. Paired traps were placed in Albany and Katonah, NY.

There was high security on site whilst the clean up took place, with lots of warnings and huge secure gates.
This was a chemical factory. The whole factory was demolished and the soil 'cleaned'. It is a large site and all that can be seen at the moment is bare earth. It is now destined for housing.

The Former Bayer CropScience site is located along the A10 on the outskirts of Hauxton. Since the 1940s the site was used for the production of agrochemicals including pesticides and herbicides, which over time have contaminated the soil and ground water.
The site was determined as Contaminated Land in 2003 under Part IIa of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and designated a Special Site for regulation by the Environment Agency.
The site had to be remediated since it posed a threat to the Riddy Brook and River Cam.

Unprotected wood is easily damaged by moisture, which can lead to decay from fungi.
