It is not easy to stand out, is it? I remember times when I woudn't raise my hand to ask a question or speak up. I didn't do it because I was afraid I was going to sound stupid and I was concerned what others thought of me. Haven't we all been afraid to stand out? I just try to remember that there is no one else like me and that's okay. #success #professional #attitude #different #standout #confidence #work #personalresponsibility #feelings #selfcontrol #emotions #kindness #smart #photography #365photochallenge #365project #project365 #365_today #Project365 #camera #365photos #photos #daily #dailypics
City of Ely Cemetery, Ely, Cambridgeshire
In Loving Memory of a Dear Boy - DANGER UNSAFE KEEP AWAY - Loved, & Never Forgotten - Mother
This First World War memorial to a young man killed at Passchendaele during the Third Battle of Ypres has been wrapped in yellow warning plastic by the Health and Safety fascists of Ely City Council. It is one of about fifty headstones in the cemetery given the same treatment.
What passing-bells for these who die as cattle?
Only the monstrous anger of the guns.
Only the stuttering rifles' rapid rattle
Can patter out their hasty orisons.
No mockeries now for them; no prayers nor bells;
Nor any voice of mourning save the choirs,
The shrill, demented choirs of wailing shells;
And bugles calling for them from sad shires.
What candles may be held to speed them all?
Not in the hands of boys, but in their eyes
Shall shine the holy glimmers of good-byes.
The pallor of girls' brows shall be their pall;
Their flowers the tenderness of patient minds,
And each slow dusk a drawing-down of blinds.
Wilfred Owen, Anthem for Doomed Youth, 1917
I am not sure what the technical name is for someone whose job it is to do this. My late Great-Grandfathers and Great-Great-Uncles who actually fought in the trenches, most of them Ely men, might have used a four-letter-word beginning with C, but I don't really want this page taken down by flickr.
I took the plastic off so I could see who it was. Obviously, this was at great personal risk to myself, and the obstacle is now a hazard to others. But I figured that the young man here had given his life with the vague idea that he was safeguarding my future freedom to do this, and under the circumstances it was the least I could do.
Once uncovered, the complete inscription reads:
In loving memory
of a dear boy
Charles Henry Newman
Killed in France September 12 1917
aged 28 Years.
Dearly Loved
& Never Forgotten
Mother
With a little research, I discovered that Charles Newman was a private in the 2/4th Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers. He was the son of Annie Fisher, formerly Annie Newman, of 48 Fore Hill Ely, and the late Joseph Newman. Charles was killed during the Third Battle of Ypres near the small town of Passchendaele. He is buried in the cemetery at Mendinghem, north-west of Ypres. He is remembered on the City of Ely war memorial, and also remembered here: loved, and never forgotten.
This very unhealthy pizza with no wonderful healthy meat consisted of broccoli, red bell peppers, sliced yellow and orange carrots, sliced mushrooms and sprinkled with shredded parmesan cheese on shredded mozzarella cheese. This was all built on top of two layers of spinach leaves, diced garlic, diced white onions, sliced green olives, with tomato sauce and blue cheese dressing and secret spices mixed in between them. This base was built on top of a shitload of extra virgin olive oil, black pepper, and grated parmesan cheese. Those unhealthy pasty weird people eat crap like this.
wish he were American! among other things he said:
"Don't use corruption as an excuse to stop aid. Use aid as a means to stop corruption [with transparency about the disposition of the funds]." But mostly he talked with seemingly genuine understanding about bottom-up governance, personal responsibility....and investment as more effective than aid.

Back in America, we believe in throwing everything away into one
single trash bag. It's all going to the trash, so just throw it away.
However, in Japan, one not only has to take care of one's own trash,
but sort it. In the US, we put things into recycling or trash. Here,
we need to put the burnable into the green bag and non-burnable into
the orange. I need to think twice before putting something into the
trash. Different culture norms.
the economic situation is really being felt here the past few weeks.
but we are initiating a little stimulus package of our own.
not quite Vorsprung dur Technik. I like the element of personal responsibility that you implicitly agree to when you visit all of these Berlin events in crumbling old places!

What happens when we lose something important to us? It is moving away from us and we can't save it no matter how hard we try. Alex had a cocoon that turned into a beautiful monarch butterfly. Her name was Juicy. We couldn't keep her. We had to let her go even though we were supper attached to her. It was hard! But we knew it was the best thing for her. Do you remember the times when you had to let go? #success #letgo #toys #difficult #lego #confidence #personalresponsibility #feelings #selfcontrol #emotions #kindness #smart #photography #365photochallenge #365project #project365 #365_today #Project365 #camera #365photos #photos #daily #dailypics
Do we let others off the hook? For me, I think that the older I get the easier it is to let others off the hook. For example, I noticed lately that people can tell me the truth without me going off on them. But when I was younger, I'd make them take their words back. I would hold them responsible for their actions. But now, I hold myself responsible for my own feelings and actions. Isn't it better to focus on our own responses than worrying about what others do? #success #professional #attitude #offthehook #relationships #work #personalresponsibility #feelings #selfcontrol #emotions #kindness #smart #photography #365photochallenge #365project #project365 #365_today #Project365 #camera #365photos #photos #daily #dailypics
We were asked to dress in as much black as possible, including 😷. As it was a warm day, I adapted as best I could.
I have learned that there are things that can be given to children that are invaluable; none of which cost a dime.
The most valuable gift is the gift of God in their lives. When parents give this gift to children, they enable their children to have a mentor and an ally with them for the rest of...

One of the rally's themes was exposing the abuse of property rights by the state and municipalities in Colorado. This rally-goer used the currently-popular "tea party" motif to make her point.
State Senator Morgan Carroll (D-Aurora) speaking about SB 87, the Special District Accountability Act, which would require full public disclosure by special districts in Colorado of their elections, meetings, and debts, and the creation of a means for citizens to determine to which special districts their homes and properties are subject.
Yes, believe it or not, we in Colorado often don't know which or even whether a state-chartered "minor government" has jurisdiction over our property. And even when we do know about them, their elections and meetings often go unannounced (or are simply cancelled outright) in order to thwart public participation and accountability. Even worse: these districts may have racked up over $53B in debt (about four times the Colorado state budget), without transparency or accountability.
