In 1983, the typical Penang Ferries have bee the one way to connect Butterworth at the Malaysian mainland with Georgetown on Penang Island. Georgetown has alway been an important trading place for Southeast Asia. Crossing over took only 15 minutes.
Only two years later, in 1985 the 13.5 kilometre long Penang Bridge to the mainland wasopened. It was the longest bridge in Southeast Asia. Due to the steadily growing car traffic, the old ferry connection is continuing to operate. A second bridge with a length of 24 kilomeztes was opened then in 2014.

The dominating seven story 30 meter high main Pagoda of Ten Thousand Buddhas in the Kok Lok Si Temple complex, combines Chinese (octagonal base), Thai ( middle tier) and Burmese (crown) elements. It is located in the Penang capital George Town at the foothill of the Air Itam mountain.
So many beautiful butterflies on Penang Hill. I'm not sure what species they are though.

Penang Hill has been the destination for the British colonial community to enjoy the cooler air of the Penang Hill. That's why they constructed the railway to get up there easy and fast.

Early Morning on Penang Hill overseeing Georgetown and the Penang bridge to the mainland of Malaysia. It was a pretty clear view as it was raining since weeks the evening before and brought down the mist.
This was my last morning in Asia.

Penang Harbor, located on the island of Penang in Malaysia, is a vibrant and historic gateway that has a steady flow of fishing boats and cargo ships. I captured this beautiful sunset from across the harbor, with those easily recognizable container cranes in the foreground.
Three-masted barque Penang photographed by William Leonard Fletcher off Auckland (NZ). The image is not dated. My estimate is that it was shot in the 1920s. My restoration and digital hand colorization of the original BW image in the New Zealand Maritime Museum archive.
"Penang was a three-masted steel barque built in 1905 with her originally name 'Albert Rickmers' by Rickmers Act. Ges., Bremerhaven for own account. 1910 sold to F. Laeisz, Hamburg, and was renamed Penang. 1917 sold to Bachmann, Bremen. 1920 sold to John Nurminen, Raumo, Finland and 1923 sold to Gustaf Erikson, Mariehamn. In December 08 1940 she was torpedoed by the German submarine U-140 at 55°25'N, 10°15'W and sunk. No one of the crew survived."

Penang´s dimensions were: length × beam × depth = 265.5 × 40.1 × 24.6 ft (80.9 × 12.2 × 7.4 m) and she had a tonnage of 2039 GRT, 1880 NRT, and 3300 DWT

In Georgetown glaubt man manchmal, die Zeit scheint stehen geblieben zu sein. Rikschas, chinesische Shophouses und Garküchen begegnen einem überall.
Pulau Penang, the Island in Malaysia is located in the Strait of Malacca and especially Georgetown has many beautiful lovingly restored colonial buildings and many Hindu, Chinese and Buddhist temples, as well as Christian churches. In Georgetown you sometimes thinks the time seems to have stopped. Rikshas, Chinese shophouses and food stalls meet you everywhere.
The Penang Bridge is a 13.5km (8.4-mile) dual carriageway toll bridge and controlled-access highway in the state of Penang, Malaysia. The bridge connects Butterworth on the mainland side of the state with Gelugor on the island, crossing the Selatan Strait.
The bridge was inaugurated on 14 September 1985 and it is the first road connection between the peninsula and the island. The bridge is well known as the second-longest bridge in Malaysia and the fifth-longest in Southeast Asia by total length, with a length over water of 8.4 kilometres (5.2 miles).

penang is a state in Malaysia and the name of its constituent island, located on the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia by the Strait of Malacca. It is bordered by Kedah in the north and east, and Perak in the south. Penang is the second smallest Malaysian state in area after Perlis, and the eighth most populous. It is composed of two parts – Penang Island, where the seat of government is, and Seberang Perai on the Malay Peninsula.
