St Margaret Pattens is a rarity among Wren's City churches in being one of the few that escaped serious damage during the Blitz, and thus for a change the interior features we see are the original ones, rather than the skillful postwar recreation or reinvention one becomes accustomed to elsewhere. It was built in 1687 as one of the many rebuilt by Christopher Wren following the Great Fire of 1666 on the site of its medieval predecessor. Situated in the heart of the commercial district, it no longer functions as a parish church but instead serves the City workers with weekday services.

The exterior is distinguished by its tapering lead steeple, the most medieval-inspired of Wren's designs and the third tallest in the City. The church occupies a corner plot so that its handsome Portland stone tower, west and south walls can be seen more prominently. Inside it is light from clear glazed windows and and mainly white plastered wall finishes. A series of oculi acting as clerestorey windows all around the building thus increasing the amount of light allowed in.

The furnishings here are notable for being the original ones, thus it is a more intact Wren interior than most. They aren't on the whole as exuberant as many churches were provided with but give a good sense of an authentic English Baroque church, if a more restrained one. The marble font is delicately carved with cherubs and the organ gallery is fronted by a magnificent royal arms.

St Margaret Pattens is usually open on weekdays from 7.30am till 4pm and a pleasant haven of peace from the bustle of the City.
