Rock City features a long, convoluted rock trail lined with gardens containing hundreds of labelled local trees and plants. The trail also leads through a variety of unique and bizarre rock formations, including the 1,000 ton Balanced Rock and Fat Man's Squeeze. Two other sections, the Fairyland Caverns and Mother Goose Village, are rock caves decorated with blacklight responsive sculptures. The High Falls of the Lookout Mountain is a manmade waterfall in the Rock City Gardens. The waterfall is 140 ft (43 m) high and empties into a base which appears as a small pool.
Comme chaque année le 11 novembre, nous nous rendons sur la tombe d'un soldat du Commonwealth qui repose loin des siens et/ou de ses compagnons d'arme. Ces tombes sont faciles à identifier grâce au merveilleux travail accompli par les gestionnaires du site de la Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
Cette année, ce fut le tour du Private H.E. Patten, du 15ème Bataillon des Royal Scots, mort le 13 novembre 1918 et enterré dans le cimetière de Autre-Eglise, un petit village au coeur de la Hesbaye brabançonne.
Assez curieusement, ce même régiment des Royal Scots s'était illustré au même endroit en 1706, lors de la bataille de Ramillies.

Patten's Rock Quarry is believed to take its name from a limemaster John Patten who operated out of Bower Yard near Benthall Edge. The quarry, probably dating from the late 18C, was the largest of those on Benthall Edge (amongst scores of others). It was once equipped with an inclined plane connected to a winding drum which conveyed loaded wagons of limestone down to limekilns at the bottom of the quarry or to a battery of 10 other kilns on the riverside at Bower Yard.
Here it was calcined and used for agricultural purposes, lime mortar, or limewash. Some of the stone may have been used in the construction of cottages and stone walls, but in general was never considered good enough for building purposes. The quarry was abandoned some time in the late 19C century but had a brief reworking in the 1920s and 1930s when circumstance must have changed to make extraction once again economically worthwhile.

Historic Patten Chapel on the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) campus in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The Collegiate Gothic style chapel was constructed in 1919 and named for John A. Patten, a local businessman and philanthropist who died in 1916.
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga was founded by the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1886 as the private Chattanooga University (changed to the University of Chattanooga in 1907). The school merged with several other colleges before joining the University of Tennessee system in 1969 as the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and became public.

Why I ride: It is calming. I am completely free of reliance on oil. It provides a unique type of independent that allows me to get where I want, when I want.
