In 1969, this was the only time that our hunters killed four bears in one day. That's nineteen-year-old me on the left, and Gary, one of the best workmates I ever had, on the right.
Those two 55 gallon drums behind Gary and I are bear bait barrels. The bait we used was very nasty, stinky, greasy beaver carcasses and slaughterhouse left overs--like cow guts and heads, and pig heads. Full barrels held between 250 to 450 pounds of bear bait. The bait often had a big, thick, steaming pile of wiggling maggots on top of it. And this was during the summer. Ahh, the sweet memories of maggot steam rising up from rotting cow guts, on bright, hot summer days, like a weird fog rolling up from a warm, heavily polluted, small, round patch of earth.
Black Bears love a couple of nice, giant paw-scoops-full of maggots at meal times. They actually would go into a bear bait, which was mostly a pile of rotting cow guts placed in a strategic location out in the woods, and if there were plenty of maggots on the top of the pile already eating that greasy, stinky stuff themselves, the bears would scoop out paws full of the fresh, live maggots, instead of chowing down on the rotting stuff. Makes sense to me. There are probably more calories and there is definitely better nutrition to be had from eating live maggots than from eating rotting, dead cow innards.

Many times, I went out bear baiting with the bed of that truck crammed full of 55 gallon drums crammed full of super stenchin' steaming bear bait.
It stunk us guides up somethin' terrible. We called it "Leave Me Alone Cologne", because nobody wanted to be near us when we had just been working with bait.
Today's bear baiters in Maine use stale doughnuts and other sweats to lure in bears. But my Uncle Finley, who was born without a sense of smell, swore that honey and baked sweets would not work on Maine Black Bears. Fin got royally pissed off one time when one of our bear hunters dumped a big jar of honey all over a tree stump next to the hunter's assigned, rotten cow guts, bear bait that day. Fin and Gary Glidden both said that using honey as bait would not work.
One time a Katahdin Lodge bear hunter caught some nice salmon, and other fresh fish, then placed them on his assigned bear bait that day. Fin also swore that northern Maine Black Bears do not ever eat fish. My Aunt Martha was so incensed by what she saw as a waste of good fish, that she guesstimated how much that good, freshly caught salmon would cost in a grocery store; and then she complained about the level of unnecessary waste that it was for the hunter to place fish on his bait; good, fresh fish that he should have frozen and taken home to feed his family with.
Time changes things. In 2008, according to what I have read in recent years, bear hunting guides, and bear hunters who set up their own personal use bear baits, in Maine use both sweets and fish for bear bait.
I bet ya' that if ol' Finley K. Clarke had been born with a sense of smell, he'd have tried using the stale sweets method of bear baiting himself.

My first try at making Turkish bath pattens (with a lot of help from my hubby). I did not know how to do it without the reinforcements between the stilts (though you can see this method in some of the later centuries' pattens). These are walnut finished with oil, and leather straps with handmade brass nails.
Patten Brothers Chester and Cyrus active in Waterloo 1893-1900. This Cabinet Card would be circa 1894 due to the size of the sleeves on the bride. I didn't notice her veil at first!

It's Encaenia tomorrow so I though I'd upload another shot of Chris Patten, Chancellor of the University of Oxford, leading last years procession to the Sheldonian. The only recipient of an Honorary Degree this year that I'd heard of is Sir George Martin, the Beatles Producer but it's still a great spectacle nevertheless.
From Wikipedia : "The most famous Encaenia is the ceremony at the University of Oxford, which usually takes place on the Wednesday of the ninth week of Trinity Term (i.e. a Wednesday in the latter part of June). Preceding the ceremony is a procession of some of the participants to the Sheldonian Theatre, inside which the main event takes place. Those who take part in the procession are the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, and Pro-Vice-Chancellors, the Heads of Houses (i.e. the university's colleges, societies, and halls), the four Heads of Division, holders of Higher Doctorates, the Proctors, the Assessor, the Public Orator, the Professor of Poetry, and the Registrar, together with the outgoing President of the Oxford University Student Union, and the Presidents of the Junior and Middle Common Rooms of the colleges to which the Proctors and the Assessor belong."

I joined Fiona Patten MP, upper house representative of the Reason Australia party, and the Friends of the Earth Yes 2 Renewables Team, to celebrate Patten's support for the Victorian Renewable Energy Target (VRET) with a solar-powered beer at the Hawkers micro brewery in Reservoir.
Since installing 190 solar panels on their rooftop, co-founder of Hawkers Beer Mazen Hajjar told us they've saved almost 40% on their electricity bill, showing action on climate change makes good business sense. Hajjar is angry and passionate about the need for #climateaction, and it was so refreshing meeting a business person who gets that it's a #climateemergency, and whose business model is based on reducing grid energy, reducing waste and recycling.
Ms Patten has shown leadership on renewable energy and climate change, and deserves recognition for working with the Daniel Andrews government to secure good oucomes. All parties should support jobs and investment in renewable energy. It's all about innovation in the energy transition under way.
All MPs should follow Patten's lead by voting yes to the VRET when it is debated in the upper house of state parliament.

In the late 1800's Col. Eugene Van Patten began construction of the Van Patten Mountain Camp, a remote resort nestled deep within the rocky heart of the Organ Mountain range.
The site of the resort is tucked into the rocky peaks at an elevation of 6,000 feet (which is 2,000 feet higher than Las Cruces). The hotel was constructed of native rock a a mud based plaster. Such people as Pat Garret and Pancho Villa stayed at the resort.

Reverend William A Patten, a native of Kingston, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, was a farmer and a clergyman.
York, Maine, was somewhat familiar to him since he performed a small number of marriages there prior to, and after, the Civil War. One can imagine that he performed such ceremonies throughout many towns and villages in seacoast Maine and New Hampshire and northeastern Massachusetts.
He enlisted, on behalf of the town of York, in March 1864 as a Chaplain for the 32nd Maine Infantry.

A pair of pattens with wooden soles, square toes and an iron ring fixed to the bottom.
Pattens are a type of protective footwear, worn to protect shoes and feet from contact with mud, puddles or street rubbish. This particular pair are of the later type with a wooden sole mounted above a metal ring. When worn over a pair of shoes, the wearer would be walking around 1 inch above the ground.
Pattens have been in use since Roman times, and continued to be widely worn into the 19th Century, particularly in the countryside where improvements to roads took longer.
Pattens were not as common amongst the upper class as they were amongst the working class, who walked rather than rode. Jane Austen’s nephew James Edward Austen Leigh wrote of his aunts in A Memoir of Jane Austen, and makes reference to their wearing of pattens:
“The other peculiarity was that when the roads were dirty, the sisters took long walks in pattens. The defence against wet and dirt is now seldom seen. The few that remain are banished from good society and employed only in menial work …”
