Son aire de distribution couvre le littoral africain du Gabon jusqu'en Namibie en passant par l'Angola.
Leur plumage est naturellement noir et blanc

" Les Accipitridés sont une famille de rapaces diurnes présente sur tous les continents, excepté l'Antarctique. Leur taille va de petite à grande.
Ils ont en commun :
- un dimorphisme sexuel, le mâle étant plus petit que la femelle,
- une vision binoculaire importante, permettant un repérage efficace des proies,
- un bec dont la mâchoire supérieure est recourbée en crochet apte à déchirer des chairs,
- des pattes munies de 4 doigts aux ongles le plus souvent longs, recourbés et acérés, capables de capturer une proie.
Il y a une exception au régime carnivore de la famille, celle du Vautour palmiste qui consomme les fruits du palmier à huile.
Ils sont le plus souvent monogames. Le poussin est nidicole et couvert de duvet.
Ils sont situés en bout de chaines alimentaires et près de 12% des espèces sont en très mauvais état de conservation. "

Hyophorbe verschaffeltii, palmiste marron, est une espèce de palmiers de la famille des Arecaceae. Cette espèce est endémique de Rodrigues.
Il est menacé par la destruction de son environnement où il ne reste qu'une cinquantaine de sujets à l'état sauvage.
Il est cependant abondamment cultivé à l'état ornemental dans différents endroits tropicaux ou semi-tropicaux de la planète.
Il a été nommé ainsi par le botaniste allemand Hermann Wendland en l'honneur d'Ambroise Verschaffelt.

Nun at Shwemawdaw pagoda in Bago. Many palmists offered their services here, in the beautifully built and landscaped area surrounding the ancient pagoda. Not sure why it is so popular here, perhaps the pagoda from the 10th century is an especially auspicious place, or the practitioners here are particularly famous for what we might call life-coaching services?

The Headquarters Building was the focal point around which the mining town of Kirwin Wyoming developed. After Gold was discovered in the 1880s, many claims were staked around Kirwin. In 1891 the Wood River Mining District was formed to organize prospector claims in order to lure outside investors. By 1903 Three Companies, The Shoshone Mining and Development Co., Galena Ridge Mining Co. and Wyoming Mining Company held most of the mining ventures in Kirwin. Between 1897 and 1907 these companies invested between 1 and 4 million dollars in Kirwin’s Mines. By 1906 eighteen mines had dug 12 to 15 thousand linear feet of exploratory tunnels to sample ore veins at 500 to 1,500 foot depth. Yet, given this, only one known carload of ore was ever shipped from Kirwin (from the No. 2 Byron Tunnel). The ore had a net value of only $65 per ton. In the winter of 1906-07, 50 feet of snow, an avalanche that killed 3 three people, a national financial crisis that resulted in fewer investors, combined to force many miners and their families to give up on Kirwin and leave in the spring.
Kirwin was more or less a company town controlled by the mining companies. Unlike most western mining towns, the companies didn’t allow saloons, brothels, gambling, or, except for the school teacher, single women. According to the historical sign posted on site by the US Forest Service, there was a resident called “Lucile the Palmist” who provided entertainment. When it was discovered there was more to her services than palm reading, she was run out of town. There was a saloon further down the Wood River for those who got thirsty. You can visit that building at the Old Trail Town in Cody where it was moved to preserve it. Kirwin was a good clean, family town attractive to investors. The nerve center of the operation was the Headquarters building.
Attempts to mine gold, silver and copper continued here through the 1960s. Even though gold, silver and copper were found in the early years, not enough ore could be obtained to pay for the long, difficult haul to market. In later years, Anaconda Lead and Silver, Bear Creek and AMAX mining companies all attempted to delineate commercial ore bodies. In the 1960s, AMAX drilled and delineated a copper and molybdenum deposit but negative public reaction to open pit mining in this beautiful mountain area, high development costs, competition with lower cost discoveries particularly in South America and Asia along the ever fluctuating product prices caused the company to abandon their development plans
