"I’m writing this from Nasser hospital in southern Gaza, where I’ve just finished operating on another severely malnourished young teenager. A seven-month-old baby lies in our paediatric intensive care unit, so tiny and malnourished that I initially mistook her for a newborn. The phrase “skin and bones” doesn’t do justice to the way her body has been ravaged. She is literally wasting away before our eyes and, despite our best efforts, we are powerless to save her. We are witnessing deliberate starvation in Gaza right now." - www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2025/jul/22/gaza-israel... ▪️ Pont Groesor, Gwynedd

19th October 2021 :

No rain this morning, or this afternoon, so I was out for my walk this morning as soon as I could. Not cold either, which was good.

Found these lobster pots in someone's garden and decided on them for today's photo. Different.

The Children’s Air Ambulance is a charity-funded service that transfers critically ill children from local hospitals to specialist paediatric centres throughout Great Britain. It also moves specialist teams and equipment to local hospitals when a child is too sick to travel. The service has carried out 650 missions at an average cost of £3,500 per flight.

This AgustaWestland AW169 helicopter, G-PICU, operated by Specialist Aviation Services, is seen landing at Gloucestershire Airport, Staverton, on 20th January 2022.

Our lovely Granddaughter, Mollie, was rushed into hospital after an Aneurysm burst and caused a bleed in her brain, in the evening on Tuesday 12th of September. She was in a Paediatric ICU for over a week and they kept her sedated until her first Birthday on the 18th. We are yet to discover the extent of her injuries and have been visiting as often as we can. My wife visited alone today as I'm coming down with a cold and didn't want to add to Mollie's troubles by sharing. Photography normally clears my head, so I went out with my camera but I felt like a lost soul.

Hawthorn, Victoria

Australia is about to vote.

I took a quick drive down to Hawthorn today as one of the more high profile contests is in the inner eastern Melbourne seat of Kooyong between the Federal Treasurer, Josh Frydenberg, and a strong independent candidate, Dr Monique Ryan, a paediatric neurologist.

The usual electoral contests in Australia are between the centre right Liberal and National Party Coalition (currently in government nationally) and the centre left Labor Party which has been more successful at a state/provincial level. Not any more though and the current government is under serious challenge in its generally very safe inner urban seats from high profile independents running on issues such as climate change and integrity in government.

The photo features Mr Frydenberg with his dog greeting early voters. I will be frank and say I don't support him or his party but am quite fascinated by the fact that one of our most powerful and prominent politicians cannot afford ever be too distant from his community!

We will know tomorrow night how it goes but, needless to say, it will be a highly watched result!

An update: Dr Monique Ryan will be the new Member for Kooyong after a significant swing against Josh Frydenberg. She will join a now quite expanded cross bench in the Australian House of Representatives.

This looks like it might be a highrise office block in the heart of the City but actually it's the Royal London Hospital in the East End.

I liked the optical illusion this shot creates as it's not clear whether this is an internal or external corner.....

From Wikipedia, "In March 2005 planning permission was granted for the redevelopment and expansion of The Royal London Hospital. The scheme was procured under a Private Finance Initiative contract in 2006. Sited on the grounds of the existing hospital, the works involved the replacement of certain of the hospital's old facilities, some of which dated back to when the hospital moved to its existing site in 1757. The works also involved the creation of a new trauma and emergency care centre and substantial new renal and paediatric facilities. These works, which were designed by HOK and undertaken by Skanska at a cost of £650 million, opened in part in 2012 and were completed in 2016. The old hospital buildings were converted into the new Tower Hamlets Town Hall for Tower Hamlets Council between 2019 and 2023."

Mollie is looking brighter and happier but still in the Paediatric Neurological ward at the LGI, in Leeds. The staff there have been wonderful, first saving her life and then nursing her back to health. We don't know the extent or results of our Granddaughter's injuries but are just glad she is still with us. This is another shot from my visit to Staithes for dawn on the day she was, later, rushed into hospital.

At the 2023 Carnaval in Frankfurt. It was getting dark, I had only ISO 100 left in my bag and opened aperture wider than was wide to compensate.

As for clowns and kids, well, about 20 years ago someone published an article on sick kids perception of the entertainment they are provided in hospitals, in particular by visiting clowns. A number of interviews clearly established most kids felt uncomfortable around them, or found them downright scary. I don't know whether paediatric wards amended their clown policies, but at least someone got published in a decent journal.

A twin shot this one: one with a figure and one without. I couldn't decide which one I liked more or seemed better, they're interesting for different reasons. The empty one feels more liminal with it's sickly green and blue wash but the one with the cleaner is nice with it's contrasting warm and cool tones. Plus it's nice to have a minifigure in there once in while :-)

Today children, we are looking through the….…errm……derelict window!

Now settle down quickly and we’ll begin.

Lindsey, please stop flicking ink pellets at Mya! You know she promised to bring Pakora’s in for us. You will see Miss Trunchbull at break and be prepared to be hurled out of the window!

And why have you brought that extremely large measuring cylinder in? If I weren’t mistaken, I would think it was a yard of wine glass!

Edward Coulson, please may we have your attention and when we do, I would like you to explain to your classmates the fascination in staring at the 5 people standing at the bus stop in the pouring rain!

Brian, Brian, Brian, what does it say on the door?

Yes, it says ‘classroom’. It does not say ‘Petting Zoo! In future please leave your farmyard animals at home. I would also ask if you really consider pink wellies appropriate footwear for a juvenile pig?

Honestly a horse and a pig! And what on earth is that steaming pile behind your desk?

Miss Hedman, yes, yes, yes, you can be pencil monitor next week.

Master Rouse, for the N’th time (where N is a prime integer), please put your spreadsheet and slide rule away. You’ll be pleased to know that we will be studying equilateral triangles later.

Your task for today is to match the above images to the following creatures. Please note there may be more than one correct answer to an image.

A Dumbo

B Sea Lion

C Dragon

D Sloth

E Chow Dog

F Lesser Spotted Eejit

G Angry Bird

An orchid bloom, remembering our grandson Vaughn, who was born 2 years ago on March 4. Born with a congenital heart defect called Epstein's Anomaly, our little tiger fought a valiant battle, but tragically passed away at 4 weeks of age. The Orchid plant recently started blooming again after 2years.

Coincidence ?

Our daughter and son-in-law have recently set up a foundation in his memory, to raise funds in support paediatric heart research at the Stollery Children's hospital in Edmonton and provide assistance to families going through the same medical situations.

KK Women's and Children's Hospital (KKH), Singapore

From its humble beginnings as a small general hospital in 1858 to a 30-bed maternity hospital in 1924, KKH has grown into an 830-bed hospital providing obstetric and gynaecology, neonatology and paediatric services. Often affectionally referred to as "KK" amongst locals, it is the birthplace of a sizeable proportion of Singaporeans, delivering over half of total newborns in the country as early as 1938.

In 1966, the hospital entered the Guinness Book of Records for delivering the highest number of newborns within a single maternity facility for that year, and it continued to hold on to this record for a full decade, delivering 85% of the population. source: wikipedia

It's foundations were laid on April 5, 1930, by the Governor of Malta, John Du Cane, in the presence of the Prime Minister, Gerald Strickland.

By 1939, at the outset of the Second World War, the hospital was still incomplete and the work was suspended, nevertheless, in 1941, the main block was converted into an isolation hospital for infectious diseases. The edifice, now given the official title of St. Luke's Hospital, had to cope with several epidemics ranging from measles to typhoid, typhus, poliomyelitis, scabies and ringworm.

By the late 1940s St. Luke's assumed its role as a general hospital with facilities for treating general medical, surgical, gynaecological and paediatric cases. In 1948 the radiology department was opened.

Jakob van Hoddis Staffeln

de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jakob_van_Hoddis

aka

Remembrance: In Erinnerung an Hans Davidsohn ( acronym: Jakob van Hoddis)

www.tuepedia.de/index.php/Am_Stadtgraben

The Milk Drop was the name given to institutions created to remedy the problems of malnutrition and high child mortality in those families who could not afford to have a nurse, and whose mothers could not breastfeed. They emerged in the late 19th century. The original idea of "milk drops" came from France, where the doctor Leon Dufour had created the first Milk Drop in 1894.1

Rafael Ulecia y Cardona founded in Madrid in 1904, La Gota de Leche, the first office for children with breasts. In the same year, in Barcelona, the Children's Milk Service was inaugurated. These institutions, in addition to providing paediatric care, facilitated milk feeding.2

The first Milk Drop that was inaugurated in Barcelona was that of Vidal y Solares, a doctor of pediatrics founder of the Hospital de Niños Pobres in Barcelona, as a section of the aforementioned hospital.3 La Gota de Leche de Barcelona, was inaugurated under the direction of the doctors Cardenal , Girona and Soler.4

The Milk Drop of San Sebastian, located on Loiola Street, began on September 30, 1903, presiding over the inauguration of Queen Mother Maria Cristina.

The Logroño Milk Drop is located at Calle Once de Junio no 2 and was inaugurated on April 10, 1905 as Mayor D. Isidro Iñiguez Carreras. From its origins to the present day it has been adapting to the municipal needs as reflected in the book on the subject published in 2008 by the Institute of Riojan Studies. Today it is a modern youth resource center based on the audiovisual arts and information, it is also the Municipal School of Music.

The Children's Office of Seville had its opening on January 8, 1906. The practitioners in charge of the consultations were the founders themselves: Ciriaco Esteban, José Román Chico and Jerónimo Oliveras Piscol, sensitized to the serious problems affecting children, especially the children of more disadvantaged families.5

In Melilla, as Chairman of the Board of Arbitrators, General D. José Villalba Riquelme, sensitized and concerned about the misery in which most of the inhabitants of Melilla were, summoned the most prominent personalities of the city, for a Meeting. From this meeting came the idea of forming a GENERAL ASSOCIATION OF CARITY. And so it was founded on January 21, 1915 under the popular name of La Gota de Leche de Melilla.

In Gijón/Xixón the well-known Lleche Drop is located in two buildings a few meters away, one of them being a maternal home built ad hoc, and another the old Valdés Palace in front of the Wetland Square, a short distance from Calle Corrida.

In Bilbao it was located in the neighborhood of Torre Urizar.

Heat sterilization techniques have their antedentin escaping in the sterilization of bottle milk that was done in the so-called Milk Drops, beneficial establishments where bottles were prepared, for daily use, for infants of classes without Resources.

MicroPolis is famous for its University Hospital, recently built in slightly unconventional post-modern style.
