The city lights lend a magical glow to the New Mexico skies.

I have been keeping myself quite busy lately with photography and managed to grab this shot during a nightscape workshop I co-hosted with Wayne. We waited several hours and hoped for the clouds to part but to no avail. Our guide and model for the evening Kialo Winters of Navajo Tours lead us around to some of the best spots that this area had to offer. After awhile we decided to take advantage of the city lights lighting up the clouds and Wayne setup some LLL and with the help of the occasional lightning strike to help illuminate the landscape before the group.

For expert guidance to some of the best spot in New Mexico look no further than Kialo Winters of Navajo Tours USA, he's a great guide with immeasurable patience, Hehe.

This is a combination of several exposures taken at low ISO to help reduce noise.

Here’s a shot from my first trip out to the southwest after a 5 week hiatus while recovering from surgery and catching up on some "real life" issues. My apologies for my absence and many thanks for understanding.

Last month, I was kindly invited by David Swindler of Action Photo Tours to accompany him on his Milky Way workshop to do a Google Earth Scouting presentation for his clients. David’s shooting technique is incredibly technical and produces fantastic results, his ability to work with multiple people on such a technical process was impressive. He not only takes you to the location of your choosing(Weather allowed) but also makes sure that you understand the process and have the shot on the card before leaving. If I wasn’t invited as a guest speaker I would have gladly paid for his very informative workshop.

My highest regards go out to David, Cody, Ingred and all the other team members working there at APT, what a great bunch of fun people, I still had a perpetual smile on my face two days later.

I am providing Skype workshops for those of you interested in learning more about Night Photography, Lightroom and Photoshop. I have been using photoshop professionally for over 25 years and I’m sure I can take your processing to the next level. There are SO many features and tools in photoshop that are being completely overlooked by most photographers. If you are interested in scheduling a Skype session on any of these topics just send me a DM or flickr message and I will be happy to schedule a personalized session just for you. I guarantee you will be happy with your session. Any skill level is welcomed from the newbie to the seasoned professional, and I’ve taught quite a few of them now.

Thanks for taking the time to take a look at my photos, and as always, your views, comments, faves, and support are greatly appreciated!! Have a great day my friends!! :)

Exploring around this alien landscape was so exciting all in a group with headlamps walking with poles tapping in single file, hoodoos glowing left then right as each passes, a soft glow bringing to mind the astronauts walking on the moon or explorers on a arctic quest. When I was watching the group I remembered this movie from back in the 80's called Altered States. In the movie William Hurt seeks out a native culture known to posses a drug allowing one to remember back through the human genetic code, then regress physically. There was a scene after he takes the drug and drops into a deep hallucinogenic state, the visuals were ok for the 80's but the storyline in quite engaging and this scene reminded me of that.

Give it a try sometime,

...........the movie......not the hallucination. Haha.

As I sat and watched the clouds pass, I caught this slight opening showing just a few stars and opened the shutter.

Gandalf yells a final warning, You shall not pass!!!!

If you haven't noticed, this one was captured using a Nikon......What a Nikon? Yeah, yeah, i'm officially on the fence with camera manufactures and will probably be there for a while. After shooting several nights with both have found when to shoot with which camera and why. I'll still be limited on the Nikon side until I can acquire a few more lenses but that too shall pass, hehe.

Took this photo, during our last workshops in July where we offered our participants an option of including a character in the scene. This one was so much fun creating and we all enjoyed a night dreaming up whimsical scenes with a variety of characters throughout the duration of the workshop.

Our model in this scene is Kialo Winters of Navajo Tours USA, His patience and expertise was instrumental in creating this scene and a big shout-out to Wayne Pinkston for providing the workshops and costumes. Thanks guys, you truly rock!!!

This was something kinda new and we thought it would be a fun workshop to try out some costumes, well what do you think, would you be interested in a photo like this, if so, please leave a comment and tell me what you think about it!!!.

I wish I could have been here all by myself (instead of 100 people), is that selfish??????

Now that my account seems to be working abliet the notifications It's time to start posting some of my photos from last year.

I took this one on a fall colors trip to British Columbia with my brotog Bill McIntosh. The place was crawling with people just like every iconic location there so i wasn't surprised by the crowd. Bill went left and I went right and soon I managed to find a spot where I could get myself over the edge but when i stepped onto the ledge it wiggled a bit, the whole stone ledge was coming lose and a few of the others had stepped out as I approached and said "no way".

I inspected the ledge and found that by wrapping my feet around a small tree next to the ledge I could reduce my weight substantially and just enough to pull off this three image vertical panorama. Sure wish I had my floaties with me, Hehe.

Last month I received an overseas communique(text message) from a Flickr friend inquiring about my whereabouts on a Thursday night.

It was my buddy Ralf Rohner otherwise known on Flickr as Skypointer.

The astronomer turned nightscaper was to be in-town looking for something to shoot, so last Thursday I took the night off and met up with what I used to call a Flickr friend, but I think Ralf is much more than that now.

An airline pilot by day and amazing photographer by night, that guy is crazy quick and had his tracker setup before I even acquired my first exposure.

As we scouted our composition and waited for the moon to set below the horizon we talked about the possibly of combining a moonburst into a nightscape with a Milky Way sky. We still had a while to wait until astronomical twilight so why not snap a few as the moon dipped below the horizon and see what we get.

Here's the resulting photo taken on a distant planet. :-)

This is a single exposure, at f2.8 lit using two LED panels on light stands using the Low Level Lighting technique.

The Hills Have Eye!!!!(Singular)

Here’s one from the archives.......

A night shot from Cyclops Arch in Alabama Hills.

The Myth of the Cyclops..............Leading his flock of giant sheep into the cave, he rolled a huge stone against the mouth of the cave to close the entrance. On finding Odysseus and his men in the cave, the Cyclops became enraged, grabbed two of the men, smashed their heads against the rocks, ate them, and then fell asleep........... Sounds like a normal day over at Mesa Arch, right? !!!! Hehe, LOL.

Everytime I venture out to a popular location I really spend some extra effort to come up with something different. The Milky Way was low on the horizon and the mercury was dropping to below freezing temps in the damp night air as Bill and I jockeyed for a spot to capture our respective visions. This is a small arch out in the Alabama Hills but if you capture it at the right angle it takes on a looming foreboding look. This was one time I wouldn't have minded a little mist floating around the perimeter. Hope you like it!!!!

I haven't posted a shot from the beach in a long time so i thought this would be a great departure from my normal faire.

Here's how i decide what photo to post next and to also keep in touch with the ever growing body of unpublished photos that i have taken. What I like to do is make a folder on my desktop, then put all of my finished photos into it, let's just call it the hopper, or as Erin Babnik calls it the marination folder. Then I set my computer to use that folder for the slideshow function and then set the screensaver to activate when I move the cursor into the lower right corner. Now all I have to do is move the mouse to the lower corner to see my ready to publish photos or ready to be reedited in some cases, Haha.

I'm having better luck posting lately, so here's one from the archives. Taken during a brilliant sunset in August 2016.

I originally had planned to do a long exposure of this spot but after reviewing the results decided to capture the action with a faster shutter speed.

I'm so happy to announce that I have been ask to return as a guest speaker at the Nightscape Photography Conference in Kanab, Utah on May 20th-23rd 2020.

T-Minus two hours. It's been months since I've been out nightscaping and I'm feeling like Rip VanWinkle, as I am throwing my gear in the car on my way to the Nightscape Photography Conference In Moab Utah.

So proud to announce that I have been invited to speak at the conference.......Wait, wait, hold-up. I'm not sure if I was "invited" It was more like I finagled my way into a spot on the staff, It's really a bizarre story too hard too believe, but to make a long story short, after talking to Royce Bair on the phone I managed to, via Royce's kindness land a spot in a side conference room.

That quickly changed to two presentations and two workshops. I have spent the last two years preparing a line of products that teaches the techniques I use in the field to navigate, plan alignments and predict the weather.

I think I found a niche.

The Smart App bootcamp sold-out in 5 Hrs. Whaaaat!

Wait, it gets better. Well maybe I will save that for my next post.

I should mention that Wayne Pinkston had a hand in my participation there, he has got to be the coolest "Night walker" on the face of the Earth.

Thanks Wayne and Thanks to Royce as well. You guys are two amazing people!!!

Wish me luck my friends!!!

An ancient bristlecone stands against the star filled night sky.

Holy Crap!!!!

Notifications are working in Flickr again. At least on my end. I haven't had one in almost two years. I sure did miss hearing that sound that lets me know that the community is still there. Not sure if my email to Flickr bitching about it had anything to do with it. They can never survive unless they promote engagement amongst the members. I may buy a Pro membership even though in the seven years i've been on flickr they only replied once to my emails. Hope SmugMug does a better job with customer support.

Has anybody else stopped receiving notifications?

We had such a great group of people for this workshop and Wayne provided some excellent instruction. I hope everyone had as much fun as I did!!!

Here's another night photo from behind Capitol Reef.

My favorite time of the year has come, Milky Way Season. Although December is not the best time of year for a Milky Way photo since the main core still lies below the horizon, you must admit that even the worst part of the Milky Way is better than any day at work, can I getta "What...What!!!!!!" “Quartering the topmost branches of one of the tall trees, an invisible bird was striving to make the day seem shorter, exploring with a long-drawn note the solitude that pressed it on every side, but it received at once so unanimous an answer, so powerful a repercussion of silence and of immobility, that one felt it had arrested for all eternity the moment which it had been trying to make pass more quickly.”

Sculpted by none other than Mother Nature's hand through centuries of craftwork.

I made this shot last month during the Lincoln County Photo Festival. The workshop was scheduled for a Saturday night with a core rising at around 10:15 and the moon to soon follow at 10:45, that leaves us about a half hour to get a shot provided the clouds cooperated. I'm always at odds with the weather because I'm usually wanting the best of both worlds, clouds in the morning and a clear sky at night than cloud up again in the mooring for sunrise. I know it's a tall order and it's only happened a few times over the last three years but I'm usually ecstatic to get two out of three. The shoot went well and the participants where happy with the class but I felt the best chances for a good comp and position would be the following night, so I decided to stay one more day and return by myself and take another stab at it. I like this location because I can back my car up with the hatch up while taking this photo on a comfy pad with a cold drink to my left and my iPod to the right. Who could ask for more.

One of my favorite image processors in the photog community is Ryan Dyar. In some of his photos there are these Dr. Suess's looking flowers. I knew I would some day find myself high enough up in the Northern Hemisphere to see one.

They primarily grow at higher elevations and can be found in the springtime scattered around the pacific northwest and Canada.

I'm not sure if it's a flower or a weed but I really like the way it twists into something that resembles a bottle brush found under the sink in Whoville. I still haven't been able figure out the name of this thing is....but some have said it's called fire weed. I'm not sure if thats true.

I took this one in British Columbia with my brotog William(Bill) McIntosh otherwise fondly known as "Tenacious B"

If you know what this thing is could you please post a comment. 🙏✌️

The Milky Way and the Constellation Scorpius rise over an Undisclosed Location.

Elitist or Entitled? which am I? I’m not sure where I fall…Hum let me see what the dictionary says:

Entitled- Definition….believing oneself to be inherently deserving of privileges or special treatment.

"his pompous, entitled attitude"

Elitist- Definition……..demonstrating a superior attitude or behavior associated with an elite.

"some that say he is a spoiled, elitist snob"

Neither sounds like a camp that I’d want to be in.

The motives for withholding locations are far ranging from “save the location”, to “save the animals” to “save the unprepared from themselves” undisclosed locations…….secret places, are we elitists or are we entitled? Those that cherish the outdoors have seen the ramifications of location over saturation, and they “are” concerned. Of course, it’s because these are the most beautiful places on Earth and they would like to see that future generations can enjoy them as well. Doesn’t sound bad to me? The problem than lies within the human spirit, the spirit to set out and seek what’s out there, to see and feel and smell it with our own senses and take in the scene in all it’s natural glory. If your an inhabitant of this planet than it’s you’re right to see it, of course it is!! The real problem is the person that just purchased a camera and has never been outside the city in his or her life, do i want to give out a location that I shot in the backcountry of the Grand Tetons? If I want to eliminate them than Yes, they would be grizzly scat by morning. But If I’m concerned for their safety or the preservation of the location than NO. How am I to decide who gets a location or not, by deciding am I than elitist? Man and his devices have traveled into the far reaches of this galaxy and beyond and found no solid evidence of life, and the fact that we have been on this planet for just the blink of an eye makes me think that this planet is a gift more than it is a privilege.

IMHO, This planet belongs to every human being but it is a gift and not a privilege!!! does that makes me elitist or just concerned? If you have no outdoor experience than please prepare yourself to see it safely and responsibly. :-)

Happy New Year to One and All !!!

I wish you all a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year.

May the light be always in your favor.

Thank you all for your kind support and encouragement over the past year, it truly means the world to a putz like me..😋

Well another decade has come and gone.

I think because of my passion for photography the last five years of my life have been very exciting and the most rewarding compared to the first half of this decade.

136 trips, over 135,000 miles of road travel and about 10,000 flight miles and I think about 100 tons of rental cars. I have photography and Flickr to thank for that. I would have never imagined that my passion for the outdoors would have been rivaled by anything, but my love of photography has done that, which makes it a perfect union of ecology and technology. But the social aspect has been the most rewarding considering I used to be a bit of an introverted hermit, Hehe.

I haven't been able to get out and shoot for myself or with my friends lately and I really miss that aspect of shooting photography, but shooting in a workshop group has it's perks too. Although a lot of work to plan and prepare it really gives me a chance to meet some great people that I never would have never met if I had been shooting alone or with my friends.

Here are my 9 favorite shots from the past year. Most were taken while teaching or co-hosting a workshop. Hope you like em.

If you are interested in a workshop trip to Joshua Tree, I will be co-hosting a meetup group there Jan 24-27. 2020

It's fall colors time so here's my card in the hat.

I recently spent some time chasing fall colors up in the Canadian rockies. We hit the jackpot as far as timing our arrival, big hats off to William McIntosh for timing the trip just right, which included a last minute schedule change to arrive one week later in September trying to time it just right. To make things more interesting Mother Nature decided to bring in winter at the same time celebrating with several snow flurries and an avalanche on the hike from the lodge to the campground, thats after the ranger warned us to stay away from the upper meadow where a mother grizzly and her two cubs had been spotted foraging for food, then after some other informal information about the weather and the fact that they had to shut-off the water to the campground because the pipes where freezing, our next question was where do we get water now, to which they replied the stream at the back of the campground......In the upper meadow!!!!

Had an awesome day out last wednesday with my buddy Ryan Smith. He was in Vegas for a visit and asked me to join him. After several hours of Photoshop collaboration we decided to head out to a spot 40 minutes outside of Town. I take my gear down to the front of the hotel and wait for valet, a beautiful black challenger pulls up and it's Ryans, what a ride that was E-ticket all the way. Ryan had a couple of spots picked out and this was one of them. After several hours of shooting we decided to split up, i was heading over to shoot the plane crash site while he shot around town. In hindsight, I wish I had followed him around town as he came away with some very interesting perspectives.

I focused on the main subject the plane and let that fill the frame here. Taken with the Rokinon 24mm f1.4 and lit using the Low Level Lighting technique with one panel to the right set to 4k color temp and the one in the back using a standard warming filter.

After wrapping up the fall colors workshop I headed off south down the 395 towards Lone Pine. I checked photopills and found that I would be passing by the Alabama Hills just about the same time that the galactic core would be rising. I decided to take an hour and grab a shot that I've been wanting to try for some time. I was curious to see how well the In-Camera stacking technique would work with only starlight. The most challenging part of this shot was the focus stacking, you need to be able to focus on the hills in the far distance and on the mountain side as well as the stars. I was lucky enough to have a vehicle heading out of Whitney Portal and used that to focus on the mountain range and it was easy enough to focus the foreground but the midground required me to hike out about a 1/4 mile and drop my torch light, go back focus the camera and then head back and retrieve the light then back to the camera to press the shutter. The things we go through some nights but I was alone and could focus on new ideas and concepts.

Taken during a workshop on the last night of the Nightscape Photography Conference. It was a long difficult hike to get back in to this spot that Wayne had me scout the night before. Of course I didn't hike out there to scout it I used Google Earth, yep Google Earth I set up the time and location and the Milky Way lined right up just like you see here. That, I think is the worst keep secret in photography in the fact that most people have only used G.E. in its basic configuration but if you tweak a few settings you can slide through time and actually see the M.W. move into position right over your subject...In beautiful, stunning 3D no less. This was our last chance to grab some milky way before we all had to head our way back to our homes and reality, so i guess i should have called this one "closing night".

I have started a Meet-up group for those of you who live in So Cal.

In an effort to bring my photography interests closer to home I have created this group to build a community of landscape, nightscape, and nature photographers here in the Southern California area.

Here's the link www.meetup.com/Adventure-Photography-Network-Group/

These are not workshops! This is hanging out together shooting the outdoors, sharing ideas, being creative, and growing a community…..together as friends and colleagues. Each participant will need to be self-sufficient!!

This one was taken at the Lincoln County Photo Festival while waiting to start a nightscape workshop I was to be teaching with David Swindler. Although fall colors peaked during the middle of the week, AGAIN.....the group was able to find several spots that were still lush and vibrant. The original shot was quite flat but a few tweaks to the exposure about a few targeted hue shifts in the HSL panel primarly orange, yellow and red. It's really easy when you understand the basics of color which really helps to separate the individual leaf colors.

A land lost to greed and profit, 🎶This land is (was) our land!!!!!

Little did I know, as I rolled along at 1am through the Bears Ears Wilderness in Wayne's jeep that it may very well have been the last time it would happen. Wayne had scouted this area out the month before and we were on a return trip to grab a few shots. We followed along a wagon path, you know, the kind that settlers used to pioneer the frontier on horseback and wagon train. We arrived at an old battered shack which looked out over this view further below. We knew there was going to be some problems with smoke in the air since the Brain's Head fire was still burning to the west but we decided to make a go of it anyway. Hence the name "Smokey Bears Ear". Hehe.

Looks like President Trump has decide to do some dicing and slicing out in the Bears Ears National Monument. Fortunately this portion has been included within the new boundaries. Unfortunately, Valley of the Gods, Cedar Mesa and Mokey Dugway have all been sliced out. If you want to help save this beautiful natural monument click the link below and sign the petition.

Wind from the west blasts ice crystals off the top of Mount Whitney at sunset.

After a lackluster sunset in Alabama Hills week before last, I returned again yesterday with high hopes. As I checked my weather resources for possible locations, a pattern of high winds started to emerge. After several rechecks Bill McIntosh and I finally agreed that the Alabama Hills would be a 50-50 gamble but since a large storm had just dusted the Sierra Nevada's we felt it was our best chance for "adverse" conditions. The entire drive up we were buffeted by 45-50 mph winds and that hadn't let up much 3 hours later when we finally arrived in the valley. As we pulled up we watched in awe as heavy gusts blasted the peaks blowing snow crystals hundreds of feet into the air. We parked and Bill & I started frantically pulling out the gear and battening down the layers, all the while blasted from every direction. The wind couldn't figure out which way it wanted to blow from and we both scrambled for a sheltered spot with a good vantage point to setup. As I watched, the clouds lit up orange as the ice crystals reflected the suns light just when this little fireball shaped cloud floated up in front of the range. A moment later an even larger blast hit it from behind and it disappeared forever.

As the color slowly faded from the sky all I could think about was how nice it was going to be once we fired up the heater back at the car. That turned out to be a self inflicted torture as the sensation finally returned to my fingertips half hour later, Hehe.

The Milky Way cuts across the sky in the Utah Back Country.

Taken during the April Milky Way Workshop with David Swindler of Action Photo Tours and friends.

You come to a point in photography where you just have to say "What the Heck" and break out the credit card for something special. During one of my last trips out, I borrowed a friends tripod and noticed a considerable increase in the sharpness of the photos taken. SO........I finally decided it was time for a real tripod. Of course I spent several weeks looking for just the right piece of equipment. I mean, If this thing is going to be under $3000 worth of my gear why isn't it the most important piece of kit I or anybody owns. After two weeks of nail biting research I found just what I was looking for. Your all probably saying" two weeks" hasn't he heard of RRS. Yeah I have!! but I'm more of an underdog kinda guy and know there's always a better alternative if you look hard enough. Boy howdy did I find it!! It's the ProMedia Gear TR344L Pro-Stix 71" inch Carbon Fiber Tripod

This Beast is taller, sits lower, is lighter and built better than the RRS tripod. It includes more features and is $150 less than it to boot. I'm so glad I had made this decision since in this photo the tripod is extended to 71 inches tall so that I could shoot over the top of the others. In other situations, I was able to choose a shooting location on an extreme angle and extend the downside leg all the way out to level up. It's apex is a solid billet of anodized aluminum that won't flex and comes in two colors, Red or Black. Oh man am I a sucker for red anodized aluminum and it even has spikes built right into the feet. This thing is a landscape photographers dream come true IMHO.

OH MY GOSH!!!!

I'm back from the conference, what a humbling experience that was. I was running around like a chicken with it's head cut off.

As technical coordinator for the conference I was in charge of the projection and needed to be there as each presenter passed off to the next to make sure connections worked and such. On top of that I had to take care of last minute bootcamp schedule changes, rehearse my script for the presentations, and prepare for the workshops I was to co-host with Wayne which if any of you know Wayne isn't over till the the rooster crows the following day.

That was taking on way too much, I think I might have gotten 16 hours of sleep in 5 days. Whew, I'm relieved that's over but sad too. I would have to say that Royce Bair has got to be one of the most charismatic individuals I've ever met. I had the honor and pleasure to spend the 48 hours leading up to the conference with him comparing notes and talking shop.

I had to have been running on pure adrenaline and dopamine for five days straight.

Hanging in the lobby working with Dustin LeFavor on his new laptop, chatting with David Swindler, eating cake with Ryan Smith and purchasing some of that cool swag Phil Monson had in toe. Royce, Wayne. It was just too surreal. These guys are my hero's!! Man, I was pumped. What a great community of peoples.

Anyhow, I shot this one using a new technique I concocted out of desperation. Let me explain, a couple of years ago I went to a location with my bro-tog Bill McIntosh at night and forgot my intervalometer. I was trying to create light trails using a long exposure. I fiddled through the camera settings and found "Multiple Exposure Mode" Hum, maybe a could use that I thought, then further into the settings I found "Additive Mode" and the light bulb went off over my head. In photoshop, the additive terminology is used as a reference to "Lighten Only Mode" I set the camera to take 9 exposures and stacked them in-camera using only the light from the remaining eight exposures. The best thing about this technique is that I don't have to do that long exposure noise reduction technique that doubles your exposure time and you cut your ISO by 50% or better. So in essence you end up with a photo that has more detail at a lower ISO that takes half the time to shoot. Cha-Ching!!! Check out the Meta-Data, It works awesome.

I showed Royce and his eyebrows went right up to his hairline, He was really excited to try it out and confirmed that this is a great technique for stacking in-the-camera, in-the-field.

Nice to get validation from one of the best in the business!!

This is a shot taken during the first nights workshop and what a great group that was. Hope everybody had as much fun as I did.

Had a great time chasing Eastern Sierra fall colors this weekend while instructing a great group of folks in the Eastern Sierras Fall Colors Workshop.

I couldn't post one of those fall shots until I get this one out of the hopper.

When mother nature puts on a show, she goes all out. If there was ever a time that I subconsciously questioned why I sit out in the dark in the freezing cold hoping for visual nirvana hoping to catch Mother Nature present her finest.

All the while that little devil on my shoulder prodding, whispering "your going to get skunked "again" Well I have two words for that little guy now...Suck It!!! LOL.

Hey ya'll, hope you all had a great Turkey Day.

Here's another for the Fall series, we were lucky enough that we caught the very last day of fall in the June lake and Mammoth Lakes Loops.

Many of the trees still had leaves but they were falling off quick...all day long piles of leaves blowing across the road almost like golds coins that have lost their value, no longer being connected to the network. Aspen groves are know to grow a root structure that interconnects all the individual trees into a type of neural network something like you would see in a trace draing of the human brain.

One of the most iconic and prevalent foilage in the Eastern Sierra during the fall are the aspen tees. They seem to emanate a golden glow when lit from the back or the side. This becomes even more interesting when you have some dappled light created by passing clouds. Here's one time you really want to be patient because you could end up with 5 or 6 entirely different looking photos without having to move your tripod at all.

#1 bucket list shot.....Check!!

"Seeking deeper meaning in spirituality"

During the summer of my thirteenth year I found a job at a rental yard near my home. After a couple of paydays I ask my parents if I could redecorate my bedroom with my own money. They exchanged dubious glances and finally agreed. Down at the local hardware store I purchased two cans of beige paint and a wall mural of this very scene. I guess you could say that it has been somehow embedded into my spirit and soul over the decade that I viewed it, and there is definitely a spiritual connection for me.

Forty one years Later:

Last month, my partner in crime Bill McIntosh and I set off for the snowy mountain peaks and grassy meadows of the Canada Rockies. This stop "Maligne Lake"

Approaching the lake was heart breaking, almost to the point of tears for me.

For those of you that don't know, the bark beetle has ravaged this area and IMHO it only has a couple of years left before its all dead......No Freaking Joke, fifty percent of the trees leading into Maligne Lake are DEAD!!!!!!!!!!!

This location is purposely difficult to access or requires a boat ride to visit. It's quick too, I flew 1500 miles and was only afforded 15 minutes on land and then its back to the boat(Sadness again.) :-(

Was it all worth it, Hell Yeah!!!! Who knows if I'll ever see it that way again, before the beetles.

Spirit Island itself has its own sad love story to go along with it. It is said, a boy and girl from two different tribes would meet on Spirit Island weekly. Of course, they soon fell in love, but their tribes remained enemies. After the girl confessed the story of her forbidden love to her father (a chief), he banned her from ever returning to the Island. Heartbroken, her lover continued to visit the island, hoping to see the girl once more. He never saw her again and died on that very island and legend has it that his spirit still haunts the island, desperately searching for the girl to this very day.

Sorry to bum you guys out with all this sadness....In spite of this, Please have a great day, Hehe.

Howdy friends!!

Here is a rare occurrence for me, posting a shot taken during the afternoon. Bill McIntosh and I decided to scout out this area during the daylight, and see what we could find just roaming around, we dropped several waypoints at our favorite spots then made our way out past this insane rock formation which resembled a skeletal snake which had just slithered up from the valley behind.

It's amazing the incredible treasures Mother Nature has hidden away in the desert southwest.

After receiving much interest I am considering hosting a workshop to this exact location next year.

Howdy friends, I hope everybody is staying safe and smart during this alarming time.

For those of you who think that this pandemic is a conspiracy, let me assure you that this NOT. My wife works for a hospital in the EVS department. That stands for "Environmental Services." When she returns from work everyday she is to immediately disrobe in the garage, then bag the clothing and wash in the washing machine. Then shower.

The hospital is now ramping up for a second outbreak that is predicted to hit during the winter months during the flu season, taxing hospital resources and co-mingling those that are infected and those that aren't.

The hospital is now broken down into zones to prevent any cross contamination and they are ordering extra PPE so that they are prepared when it hits.

Batten down the hatches folks, we aren't out of the woods yet.

This one was taken during a Fall Colors workshop in 2019. This was taken facing east, five minutes before my prior post named "UFO" Which I really should have called USO since it looks like a submarine breaking the surface. Like the Nautilis.

The colors of Yellowstone are simply incredible. So vast an area as to take one many weeks just to cover the most visible locations, but there are many other hidden gems within the interior network of hiking trails throughout the caldera. hmm.....perhaps next summer before the whole thing blows up, Hehe.

Hey my friends, it's so good to be back on flickr, so to speak. I'm not sure if you guys are having the same issues that i'm having but my account has been silent(dead) for the last 8 months. The only way I know of any type of activity is if I physically go and look on my laptop, no notifications, no e-mail, nothing. The silence is maddening!! Yeah, Yeah, of course I've checked the settings, I think that Insta-wreck(instagram) is somehow blocking my Flickr notifications. I uninstalled instagram but Flickr still remains silent. :-)

Speaking of silent, I spent weekend before last scouring the tablelands for petroglyphs to line up under the Milky Way. At this time of year the temperatures were in the 90's throughout the day so most of my time was spent searching during dusk or dawn. As I walked along the trail out of my last location I suddenly felt quite ill. I was having problems keeping my balance as if my equilibrium was on the fritz. I shook it off and soldiered off down the trial towards the car. About a mile later it happened again. Hmmm, why am I feeling so dizzy? I just had a big fat hamburger back in town not three or four hours ago, I can't be hungry already. I decided to stop off the trail and quickly scarf down a protein bar to see if that would help when my phone rang. It was my wife asking if I was O.K. Yeah I'm fine Why, I asked. She informed me that there where just a couple of 7+ magnitude earthquakes in ridgecrest just within the last hour less than 100 miles away as the crow flies......... Ah-hah!!!

Have you ever heard the expression " No one can hear you scream in space" (well they can't hear you out in the boondocks either). Well did you know that when your out in the middle of nowhere an earthquake is literally silent! It's true. I shit you not!! not a sound!! Just movement!!

I've been living in Southern California my whole life which is kinda like living on gods etch-a-sketch but had never realized that the noise associated with an earthquake is all the manmade crap rattling around you, LOL. :-)

Tale-of-The-Take:

Instead of sweltering in the tent or car down in the Owens Valley I decided to drive up to the Bristlecone forest and stay the night at the campground which is almost 10,000ft. in elevation which would help cool things off for the evening. It's a great place for night photography because it is a registered dark-sky location. I found this spot while wandering around the outskirts of the campground during a sunset on a previous trip and had marked it in Gaia GPS for later reference.

Here it is referenced!! Hope you like it!!!

I hope everybody is fairing well through these crazy times.

This one was taken during a Fall Colors workshop in 2019. I have frequented this spot a dozen times only hoping for a show like the one I witnessed on this fine evening.

Hey everybody hope all is well.

Here's a fun shot that I took last year during the "Lincoln County Photo Festival".

I was out scouting locations and checking alignments for my friend David when I passed this cool abandoned water tower on the road in. Of course I hopped out and like a gun from a holster whipped out PhotoPills and went to work looking for possible alignments.

The moonrise timing for this night was horrible but I managed to pull out a full Milky Way impression on my sensor 10 minutes after moonrise which most would say is impossible. It took a few attempts in photoshop with different techniques to bring the flat bluish looking sky back into a natural multicolored Milky Way sky but it worked. The actual image data is there, it just needs to pushed around "heavily" and I found that using a few different exposures and some of the blend modes in photoshop with some minor local editing did the trick.

***Here's a new feature I will be adding to select photos on my flickr stream.

To see a before/after sample in a slider window click the link below. Feel free to browse around my website, more content coming soon, as soon as I can figure out how to get it out of my brain and onto the webpage, LOL.

Wait, wait, wait!!!! Fav my photo first, hehe.

I'm stoked!!! I think my account is fixed.... other than being unable to receive notifications to my mobile device (which is more important too me than the laptop) it seems to be working.

Oh well, some good stuff is better than no good stuff, I guess. It appears my account is stuck in limbo between the old yahoo account screen name and the new login info that I typed in when they made me switch over. Since Smugmug was going to be the new "foster parent" to Flickr I thought I would be a good sonny and purchase an account there and start selling my photos on the web instead of just local art shows and word of mouth.

So, I sent the support "Heros" over at Flickr/Smugmug team an email three weeks ago and have received no reply. My account started working but I haven't received an email reply yet.

So if your account is broken, go buy a Smugmug sight and they might fix your Flickr account. Weird!!

Head on over and check out my spiffy Smugmug sight and see if you would like to sell your photos there as well.

Bonus!!!

If you are a member of "The Nature Photography Network" you can get a 20% discount. (I'm such a cheap skate), Hehe.

The sun casts an early morning glow across the snow-capped peaks of the Grand Tetons at Schwabacher's Landing in Wyoming.

It's been a long time since I have posted a shot, either here or on instagram, again my apologies, It’s Milky Way season and I’m way busy with workshops and skype sessions so please “bear” with me. your patience is greatly appreciated.

This is going to sound really pretentious and egotistical, but please hear me out!!! It's not as self serving as it sounds, really!!

As I was setting up this shot, I stepped into a "Trap", not a bear trap, though the place is rife with the things at this time of year, (not traps, bears) I sat here capturing this scene, silent, except a cool breeze blowing and the birds singing, I had an epiphany. Over my last three workshops and meeting many people, I have realized that there is so much in photoshop that most photographers are overlooking. (I also realized that I have more fun teaching photography and photoshop than actually taking the photo). It also dawned on me that I have a particular skill set, a skill set that was forced onto me in the family business, it’s kinda like a kid that was forced to learn the piano at 10 years old. Later when the kid grows up he finds out that all his friends and colleagues love and play the piano too, except they just started playing and you’ve been playing for years…..or, more like decades.

It has become apparent that most photographers only know the tools they need to process the photo but don’t actually know how photoshop works or better yet “thinks”. I love to see the faces of clients, friends or acquaintances when I show them some cool processing tricks that I learned many years ago and use everyday at work. I have a list as long as my arm of tools and techniques that have been primarily overlooked by the masses of photographers out there. Well, I decided it was time to “Pay It Forward” and start spreading the good word in the landscape community about these overlooked tools and techniques. I realized that it would be difficult to pass this info on a one-on-one basis, which I have been doing thus far, via Skype. But if I could impart this info to the instructors I could cover more ground and increase the saturation factor. If you are a workshop instructor or know photoshop and think that maybe there's more, then I invite you to contact me and see If I can help you out. Not a single person has regretted it. Honest!!

I hate the way this all sounds because it just sounds like some guy bragging on the internet about how good he is. That’s not it at all, I feel bad that so many people are missing the best stuff in photoshop and when to apply it. I’ve watched 30 minute videos from highly respected and admired photographers on youtube showing how to do a particular technique that can literally be done in 30 seconds, no kidding. Once you learn the basic navigation and tool usage it will open up so many possibilities for you, it’s like a creative explosion!!! This is not about teaching others to use photoshop but more like filling in the blanks for those that have a firm grasp of photoshop but “might be missing some important knowledge, shucks there’s plenty of people out there that know photoshop better than me, (Maybe not, Who Know's) but my specialty it seems is analyzing a workflow and asking questions as we go, that’s when the magic happens, that’s when a door on the side of my head opens and stuff just starts pouring out onto the client. yuck, gooey!!! LOL.

If you have been following me a while then you “know” who I am, and have you ever sat at the computer thinking “I wish there was someone here that I could ask a question about photoshop, well now’s your chance!!! Send me a message or comment and I’ll be glad to help you out!!!

I'm gonna post the before photo tomorrow, so that you can see the possibilities of photoshop. Stay tuned!!

I truly miss spending time interacting with my friends here on Flickr but alas, my schedule working a full-time job and working photography has limited my ability to socialize in the manner you’ve been accustomed to but as always, Thanks for taking the time to take a look at my photos, I am always thankful for your views, comments, faves, and support, they are greatly appreciated!! Have an awesome weekend my friends!! :)

I am obsessed with this waterfall. I love that it's out-of-the-way and not completely overrun, which is why I'm not mentioning the location. (You can see a shot from here on my photostream taken last month during the spring melt.)

Just as I left, a heavy downpour arrived. I was thrilled to get good light late morning.

Rant:

Sadly, I did pick up garbage on the way back up the trail that wasn't there on my way down. Apparently, packing it out is too much for some and to bag up dog poo and leave it for someone on the trail is utter laziness.

Please pack out your garbage.

Pack it in, Pack it out Symbol with text in English.
