Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) Strike
Hundreds of Calgary Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) union members rallied outside the Calgary Harry Hays Building after the union and the federal government came to odds in key contract issues.
Across the country, around 155,000 federal public servants, including 35,000 Canada Revenue Agency workers, have raised picket lines at around 250 locations.
The union is calling the country-wide strike one of the largest ones in Canadian history.
Alex Creamer, chair of the Calgary area council for PSAC, says the turnout had been “fantastic” and that members arrived at around 6 a.m.
He added they will continue “past the end of the normal workday” every day until an agreement is made.
“On top of the hundreds of members that are here, we’ve also had support from other union members that aren’t on strike and other Calgarians showing that they are supporting our endeavours and our plight.

It's been exactly one year since this fiasco rolled out. Public Servants all across the country were feeling the wrath that this fiasco, named after a mythical bird, was taking hold and dragging people's lives into the ashes with it instead of rising from the ashes like the mythical bird is supposed to do.
People not being paid, people being double and triple paid, people being paid only a percentage of their wages, people finding that their mortgage payments were bouncing higher than an Indian Rubber Ball ever could and people's lives being turned from once what was one that had a good job with a steady paycheque to something that was causing mental anguish in fear of how they would keep a roof over their heads or food on the table.
Every pay day, I hold my breath and pray that I will not only see my cheque deposited but, my husband's as well. When you find you are paid, you literally throw your hands in air screaming like you just won a major lottery when all you actually did, was receive the money that the Government of Canada agreed to pay you for the work you do - that they owed you.
It's not something that one who works for the Federal Government likely ever imagined that when they agreed to the letter of offer of employment that it had in it some type of invisible ink that read "We reserve the right at some point to expect you to work for free. We are not going to pay you, we are going to lie to you and tell you that you will be paid very soon. We won't care if you are suffering mental health issues because you are not getting paid, we won't care if you loose your home, if you have your utilities cut off, if you can put food on the table or even buy your child a gift at Christmas. We don't care if you have to tap into every bit of savings that you had, that you have to humiliate yourself and beg family and friends for money or even a place to live because you lost your home." At least they didn't give us a secret decoder pen to decipher that invisible ink.
I cannot stress enough to all of my friends and family PLEASE I implore you to write your MP, tell him or her that this is unacceptable that people who work for the federal government are not being paid. Everyone who works deserves a pay cheque after all, it's the LAW!
People still have no idea that there are people working and not being paid and people deserve to be paid for the work they do.
