Known by several common names Passiflora subpeltata is a prolific weed in Queensland. Unfortunately this spring it has flourished in my Gold Coast hinterland garden, smothering shrubs and fences and anything it can climb on. It is readily identified by its remarkably promiscuous attractive flowers and leaf shape. However, it is a Category 2 environmental pest and toxic plant because it contains cyanic acid potentially causing vomiting and illness among stock and children.

Just about a year ago, I posted a shot of Queen Anne's lace taken from almost the exact same location. It's from a fallow farm field behind our house, but only a few yards south from last year. The last one had a sort of purple haze to it, so I think I like this one better.

Hybrid tea rose at the preferred angle. Grown in my home garden in the hinterland of the Queensland Gold Coast, still sporting a raindrop or two from a recent shower.

Florida’s most prolific iguana is the most substantial of all invasive species. The Green Iguana grows over 5 feet and can weigh up to 15 pounds. These iguanas are shades of emerald green with large spikes running down their back and tail. Green Iguanas also have a large dewlap (or neck flap) for regulating their body temperature. They present their dewlap to potential mates during courtship.

The Green Iguana’s tail is its primary weapon. It’s capable of whipping other animals when threatened. When ensnared, an iguana can detach its tail and grow another one. Green Iguanas also have another unique defense system, a third eye. On the forehead, they have a primitive pineal gland. The gland is not capable of forming images like the other two. They use their parietal eye to sense changes in light and track predators above.

Green Iguanas are herbivores. However, their diet in Florida does not provide enough water to regulate their body temperatures. As a result, the iguanas tear through plant matter, leaving little behind.

Green Iguanas are prolific breeders. Females are capable of laying 45 eggs in every clutch. With few natural predators, most of their young reach reproductive maturity.

Green Iguanas are native to Central and South America. The iguanas first established populations in the Florida Keys. It’s thought the green iguanas first hitched a ride on South American fruit ships. In the following years, careless pet owners released the iguanas into the wild.

This was a busy day.... The usual walk, potluck lunch at home, and a meeting afterwards... Followed by choir practice... No time for comments...maybe tomorrow, I hope!

The prolific Second Falls at Graveyard Fields...After I walked across the wooden bridge over the Yellowstone Prong, I turned to the right and headed down to the base of Second Falls. Once again, I at arrived wooden staircases which descended down at multi-levels to a viewing platform and then proceeded a few steps below to the base of the waterfall. This was my first sight of Second Falls, and I made this capture handheld with my trusted OM-D E1 MKIII camera which I openly carry on a backpack strap as a trail camera. Prior to my firsthand experience here, I've seen many photographs of this waterfall and not knowing anything about the trail, I had imagined a long, challenging stretch of a trail. To my surprise, the entire length from the parking lot to the base of the waterfall is only about 1/3 of a mile and the trek was effortless! That clearly explains why it is so popular and busy here. This was the easiest waterfall trek I've hiked in years!

This was a very prolific session, concerning TLEs. More than 120 events were observed during the evening of Nov. 11, 2023 over #thunderstorms at E. Aegean Sea and W. Turkey. This is a so called "Jellyfish" red sprite event (a term used by sprite-chasers). That is, a group of "carrot" sprites stacked together, creating a red "dome" on top and a "forest" of tendrils at the bottom. The mountains of Evia isl. can also be seen with wind turbines on top of them. The light behind them comes from the parent lightning.

TLEs (like red sprites) are upper atmospheric electrical discharges and they appear, under specific circumstances, above thunderstorms (e.g. red sprites appear at altitudes of 40-90 km).

I've used a #Sigma 85 mm lens at f/1.4, for 1/25'' with 40 k iso.

Hibiscus flowers are strikingly colourful and prolific. This plant grows in a 45cm plastic pot and is 60cm tall. Even though it is well watered and drained it never shakes off the creases of its tight enclosure in the bud. This is neither a good nor bad thing but it does ensure the photographer has some texture to play with.

The Perseids are a prolific meteor shower associated with the comet Swift–Tuttle. The Perseids are so called because the point from which they appear to come, called the radiant, lies in the constellation Perseus. The name derives in part from the word Perseides (Περσείδες), a term found in Greek mythology referring to the sons of Perseus.

he stream of debris is called the Perseid cloud and stretches along the orbit of the comet Swift–Tuttle. The cloud consists of particles ejected by the comet as it travels on its 133-year orbit. Most of the particles have been part of the cloud for around a thousand years. However, there is also a relatively young filament of dust in the stream that was pulled off the comet in 1865, which can give an early mini-peak the day before the maximum shower. The dimensions of the cloud in the vicinity of the Earth are estimated to be approximately 0.1 astronomical units (AU) across and 0.8 AU along the latter’s orbit, spread out by annual interactions with the Earth’s gravity.

The shower is visible from mid-July each year, with the peak in activity between 9 and 14 August, depending on the particular location of the stream. During the peak, the rate of meteors reaches 60 or more per hour. They can be seen all across the sky; however, because of the shower’s radiant in the constellation of Perseus, the Perseids are primarily visible in the Northern Hemisphere. As with many meteor showers the visible rate is greatest in the pre-dawn hours, since more meteoroids are scooped up by the side of the Earth moving forward into the stream, corresponding to local times between midnight and noon, as can be seen in the accompanying diagram. While many meteors arrive between dawn and noon, they are usually not visible due to daylight. Some can also be seen before midnight, often grazing the Earth’s atmosphere to produce long bright trails and sometimes fireballs. Most Perseids burn up in the atmosphere while at heights above 80 kilometres.

Its flowers have bloomed continuously since June of 2022.
