Nothing like having one's face shoved in the mud when the camera is around.

Back to my pinky purple phase and those oh so cheerful looking African Daisies.

PINKED ITS WAY INTO EXPLORE #459 3RD NOVEMBER

Pinky Winky Hydrangea in all its winter glory.

Bar Harbor is a town on Mount Desert Island in Hancock County, Maine, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population is 5,235. Bar Harbor is a popular tourist destination in the Down East region of Maine and home to the College of the Atlantic, Jackson Laboratory, and MDI Biological Laboratory (Salisbury Cove village). Prior to a catastrophic 1947 fire the town was a famous summer colony for the super-affluent elite. Bar Harbor is home to the largest parts of Acadia National Park, including Cadillac Mountain, the highest point within twenty-five miles (40 km) of the coastline of the Eastern United States. The town of Bar Harbor was founded on the northeast shore of Mount Desert Island, which the Wabanaki Indians knew as Pemetic, meaning "range of mountains" or "mountains seen at a distance." The Wabanaki seasonally fished, hunted and gathered berries, clams, and other shellfish in the area. They spoke of Bar Harbor as Man-es-ayd'ik ("clam-gathering place") or Ah-bays'auk ("clambake place"), leaving great piles of shells as evidence of this abundance. In early September 1604, French explorer Samuel de Champlain ran aground on a rock ledge believed to be just off Otter Cliffs, and when he came ashore to repair his boat he met local natives. Champlain named the island Isles des Monts Deserts, meaning "island of barren mountains"—now called Mount Desert Island, the largest in Maine. Mount Desert Island (often abbreviated MDI), in Hancock County, Maine, is the largest island off the coast of Maine. With an area of 108 square miles (280 km2) it is the 6th largest island in the contiguous United States. It is the second-largest island on the Eastern seaboard, behind Long Island and ahead of Martha's Vineyard. According to the 2010 census, the island has a year-round population of 10,615, although it is estimated that two and a half million tourists a year visit Acadia National Park on the island. The island is home to numerous well-known summer colonies such as Northeast Harbor and Bar Harbor.

Yesterday it had rained during the night and there were lots of water droplets everywhere and the sun was bright. This is a petal on a hydrangea bush that had been white but then they started to get pink on the edges first and then the whole blossom but much more on the back side of the petal. There is a variety called "Pinky Winky" that does that. There is a photo of some of the blossoms that are still white but turning that I put up.

An older shot from two summers ago. This moth is feeding on pinky winky hydrangea.

Pinky Winky Hydrangea

Saturday = PINK

Color My World Daily

Pinky Winky (Hydrangea paniculata) in our garden. This hydrangea is hardy to Zone 4, likes sun and partial shade, seems to be drought tolerant and puts on a great show. The large white panicles open in mid to late summer, and as summer turns to fall the florets at the base of the panicles turn pink. The flower panicles continue to grow, producing new white florets at the tip. The result is spectacular two-toned flower panicles that can reach up to 16 inches in length!

This is the fifth summer for the two plants we purchases as 18" specimens and we had to move them after two summers as the first location proved to be problematic. We transplanted them to a location where they had more room and they have doubled in size in the last two years. They put out dozens of panicles on each plant and depending on weather conditions, start producing flowers in mid June and continue to bloom through mid fall. We leave the dried out panicles on the plant to add winter interest, although they do not appear to offer anything for the birds.

If you want a showy and unusual hydrangea for your garden, it is well worth giving these a try.

Hydrangea paniculata 'PINKY WINKY' WW35 Panicle S2- (Huylenbroeck, 2003) Panicle Hydrangea, Mature plant size: 6-8ft., WHITE>PINK, The elongated panicles open pure white and age to purplish pink., USDA Hardiness Zone 3-8, Michigan Bloom Week ISO WW28, In Garden Bed S2 for 3.2 YEARS (Bluestone). Bluestone Perennials: Massive 12-16" flowers are upright on 6-8' plants - never droopy. Blooms are produced all season, the newest being white; the older ones deep pink; yielding a remarkable display of pink, white, and near red on a dense foliage shrub.

Heritage Hydrangea: Hydrangea paniculata ‘PINKY WINKY’ is best grown as a multi-stemmed shrub. Prune in early spring to maintain a compact shape. Inflorescence: The elongated panicles open pure white and age to purplish pink. Bred at the Research Station Melle, Belgium, in 2003, by Dr. Johan van Huylenbroeck, Director of Applied Genetics and Breeding at The Flemish Institute for Agricultural and Fisheries Research. Zones: 3 to 9 Size: Large (to 2m). Hydrangea paniculata 'Dvppinky'

We affectionately refer to this window as the "pie hole."

It goes from the kitchen into the screened-in porch.

I have not used it for pies yet, but I will!

Perennial order came today! Resting in the porch til we can plant.
