Se habla poco de los suicidios, hay una especie de "ley del silencio" sobre ellos; por eso me impactó esta pancarta. Me acerqué a hablar con una de las personas que la portaban. Me dijo que pedían una concienciación de la Administración ante el problema. Siempre igual, pensé.

He curioseado muy superficialmente sobre ello y encontrado algunos datos meramente estadísticos. En lo que a España se refiere, he hallado un estudio con elocuentes gráficos que analiza las estadísticas oficiales desde 1910 hasta 2011. Según él: "Desde el año 1910 hasta 1940 se observa un ligero incremento en la incidencia del suicidio. Posteriormente, durante las décadas de la dictadura franquista, las tasas se redujeron a la mitad (entre 1940 y 1981 disminuyeron un 54,5% las tasas totales, 56,1% las de los hombres y 49,5% las de las mujeres). A partir del año 1981 se han producido oscilaciones (más marcadas entre los varones), aunque todavía no se percibe una tendencia clara si alcista o bajista"(1)

Fríos titulares de 2018 afirman, por ejemplo:

-"En España más de 3.600 personas se suicidan cada año; de ellas un 75% son hombres"

-"Las muertes por suicidio duplican a las que producen los accidentes de tráfico y son 80 veces superiores a las que causa la violencia machista".

-"Es la primera causa de muerte externa, es decir por causas no naturales, en la población general".(2)

En lo que a Galicia se refiere: "Expertos advierten que la tasa de suicidios en Galicia es de 12 personas cada 100.000, con "casi una muerte al día" (3)

En la U.E., en 2015, los muertos por suicidio fueron más de 56.000; 8 de cada 10, hombres.

En general, las tasas de suicidios más bajas se dan en los países mediterráneos, menos ricos que los del norte. Así, Chipre 4,45¸ Grecia 4,69, Italia 6,07, España 7,51. La media de la U.E. es de 10,91, cifras referidas siempre a cada 100.000 habitantes. Entre los países de la antigua URSS se encuentran las cifras más elevadas, pero Bélgica tiene una tasa de 16,85, Finlandia 13,46, Suiza 12,96, Suecia 12,33, Noruega, 11,71 (4)

En ninguna de estas cifras se incluyen las tentativas frustradas. Dice la OMS que: "Hay indicios de que, por cada adulto que se suicidó, posiblemente más de otros 20 intentaron suicidarse". (5). Eso nos da una espantosa cifra de casi 17.000.000 de seres humanos que quisieron terminar con lo más preciado que poseen: su vida. ¡Cuánto sufrimiento antes de esta decisión!

No soy quién para analizar estos datos, pero los primeros consejos que da la web de Clínica Mayo a personas con tendencias suicidas son por este orden: 1)"Acércate a un amigo cercano o a un ser querido". 2) "Ponte en contacto con un pastor, un líder espiritual u otra persona de tu comunidad religiosa". 3) "Llama a una línea directa de prevención del suicidio". 4) "Pide una consulta con el médico".(6)

A mí todo me sugiere por un lado desesperación, una desesperación siniestra y total, una incapacidad para afrontar los problemas en la vida basada en la falta de autoestima y también, por qué no, en la falta de preparación y en un escaso apoyo social traducido en aislamiento. Drogadicción y depresión son palabras que se repiten constantemente entre las principales causas de suicidio. Curiosamente evitar ambas depende de nuestra voluntad y del apoyo y empatía que encontremos en los demás. Y de esto último se habla poco. Sólo en pequeños círculos se afrontan las obligaciones que tenemos para con los demás, quizá porque es incómodo sentirnos "responsables de..." y pensamos que para eso está el estado. Pero el cariño, el abrazo, la compañía, el escuchar, el compartir, el aconsejar, el hacer sentir importantes a los otros, no se puede legislar. Por eso digo al principio que ante esa toma de conciencia que se demanda sólo a la Administración, pensé: Siempre igual.
