Atari 2600 Joystick

When I first plugged in Charley's joystick, I couldn't believe the difference. It felt like it was brand new, and even better.

Parts Replaced:
* PCB Board (w/ gold PCB Board due to contacts being worn),
*Red (fire) button (due to nipple being worn at the bottom)
*Spring (old spring was dark color due to age, even after washing)

After cleaning everything, I was still having issues with the joystick. In order for the red (fire) button to make contact on the new PCB board (bottom nipple was worn) I had to purchase a new button, thus a new spring came with it as well.
The wires are very old (36+ years) so I had to be careful taking them off the old PCB board and placing them on the new one. One was loose (wouldn't stay on the old or new PCB board), thus I took a pair of needle nose pliers and gently tightened the metal piece at the end of the wire onto the board.
I could've purchased new dome contacts and soldered them on to the old board, as you see in the left photo, but I decided to purchase a gold PCB board, which I ordered from Best-Electronics based in San Jose, CA, which is the largest Atari parts store in the world. If you need it, they have it.

What is PCB Assembly Services

There are two ways to make a pc board assembly; namely, Surface Mount Technique (SMT) and Through-Hole Technique (THT). SMT is a circuit assembly technology in which the pinless or short-lead surface-mounted components (SMC/SMD) are mounted on the surface of a Printed Circuit Board (PCB) or other substrate and assembled by soldering through reflow or dip soldering methods. THT uses leaded components with circuit connection leads and mounting holes designed on the printed board, and establishes long-term mechanical and electrical connections by inserting the component leads into the through-holes reserved on the PCB, temporarily fixing them and then soldering them on the other side of the substrate to form reliable solder joints.

What is PCBA manufacturing?
The PCB bare board passes through the SMT patch, and then passes through the entire process of the THT plug-in, referred to as PCBA.
SMT (Surface Mount Technology). It is an assembly technology that mounts surface mount components onto PCB bare board.
THT (Through Hole Technology). It is a through-hole insertion installation technology.

Included above is the printed circuit board (PCB), which is 36+ years old and the dome contacts on it are worn. I'm hoping once they're cleaned, including the joystick parts, it'll work better.
In this photo is the white plastic joystick handle, which is what breaks on these joysticks. Even though Charley's works fine, there's two tiny cracks on the edge. I replaced it with a new one.
You can also see the tiny spring that goes inside the red (fire) button. You don't want to lose this.

The PCB board along with the rest of the parts to the CX-40 joystick are nice and clean, including the screws, which there's four screws on the bottom of the joystick.
I soaked the pieces in hot soapy water for 2 hours. I then took a tooth brush and cleaned all the parts, including the screws and spring.
To eliminate anything that was left behind, I soaked all the parts (excluding PCB board and the pin/conductor joystick cable cord) in vinegar for 1 hour. The vinegar doesn't harm the plastic parts.
To clean the PCB board, which was quite dusty (previous photo) I used 91% rubbing alcohol with a q-tip. It doesn't hurt the PCB board because a thin piece of plastic covers the board and dome contacts.
If you look closely (enlarge photo) you can see which color of wire goes where.
I ordered this board from Best-Electronics, based in San Jose, CA and the largest Atari parts store in the world.

This board is suppose to last a lifetime and better than the original CX-40 PCB boards. I have to agree, these boards are awesome. They seem to be 25% - 30% better than a new original board.
