From my most recent (hopefully not my last) trip to Cuba

I was just walking down the street and being taken by a one moment of another beings life, when a little boy was playing hide and seek and zipped around the corner to see if he was being followed. He did not see me because he thought I was too busy seeing something else. He took me alrifgt. I slowed down to the peed of life and let him hide in my camera where he took the shot by taking me.

Well W. Eugene your approach to lighting works for me.

This image is part of a greater project, a book serries titled "Turning the Last Page." The title of the Cuba project is "Cuba: Turning the Last Page of 1962."

The camera was the fabulous Nikon D810. The lens was 105mm lens. To make sure we are all on the same page, there are always two aspects to every shoot. "The Shoot" itself and the post processing to final art. This image contains both aspects and is the outcome of the post processing this is a copy of that final file.

For "the shoot" aspect of this project no artificial light, no make-up on the subjects, no reflectors or diffusers all of the images are spontanious none of the subjects are posed. So what you are seeing is (from the shoot aspect) just the lens. Just the camera. Just the light that was there. Just the subject

My goal every time I shoot is to be the weakest link in the entire project.

As to this image I frequently feel like this when I am there with a camera.

I have always held that the lens is the brush, the camera sensor is the canvas. I have also held the that the beauty of a lens is not in how well it handles focus but rather how well it handles from in focus to blur.

There is no image I cannot capture. There is no image in which my vision of the image and the beauty of moment that took me that is not enhanced by the beauty of the glass and lens design of the Nikon system.

So you want to know why I choose Nikon? Now you know.

Because of my Nikon camera- I AM: A Super Hero. Because of the Nikkor lenses I AM: A Super Hero with tack sharpnes at point of focus and beautiful Bokeh every place else in the image.

Shot this image on the last day my Palm Beach Photographic Burma workshop was at Inle Lake. Traveled to this village on Inle lake in a long boat that is maybe 3-4 inches above the water in complete darkness. TO get to the this particular village was about a 3 hour boat ride one way.

You know when someone is looking at you from behind you? that feeling you get? So every time I would turn around this little boy would dart back into his house. I spent a good 10 minutes playing hide and seek. However I had 400mm lens... SO I win

This image was captured by a Nikon D-800 camera. 80-400 VR II lens in the Nikon Electronic Image File Formant (.NEF) Shot on Lexar 128 gigabyte 1000 speed UDMA Flash media. file was post processed using Capture NX2 Photoshop CC2014, Nik Color Efex 4.0.

Final file is stored and scaled using Genuine Fractals.

This is from my latest trip to Cuba. I admit it I am a cat lady. I shot this with thew 50mm 1.8 S series lens. A lens that truly blew me away. To be honest I have alway viewed a 50mm lens as an optical lens cap. I have learned the error of my ways. This is a breathtaking star lens with beautiful bokeh.

I shot this image on my second day of my February 2015 Palm Beach Photographic Workshop to Cuba in Havana. (There are two spots left for my March 21-29 workshop. www.workshop.org/travel.php) I only brought two cameras to the workshop and three lenses. The cameras the amazing Nikon D750 and and a Nikon D800 modified (by lifepixel.com) to capture infrared.

The Lenses were the equally amazing and versatile Nikkor 28-300mm (AKA "the Street sweeper), Nikkor 24-120mm Nano and the Nikkor 80-400mm Nano coated lenses.

This image was captured with my Nikkor 28-300mm (AKA "the Street sweeper) my go to lens with my go to camera.

Post processing was done with Capture NX-D (Raw processing) Photoshop CC 2014, onOne Perfect Suite and Nik Collection Software.

I have a very large folder of "TO_DO" images spanning all the years I have been shooting.

Boxers and dancers are an incredible fascination of mine in that the both train at the same intensity and passion. Both require a fluidity of motion that is beautiful to watch.

As you know I am fascinated with bokeh and the combination in focus to blur.

I love photographing dancers, especially Cuban Ballet Dancers.This is from my latest trip to Cuba. We were on our way back from shooting dancers leaping in the street and the lights was right, the background screamed 105mm f 1.4 and the lovely MariKarla Laguna was hanging out in the shade. It amazes me what passing clouds can do tho change the light.

This image was taken on day two of the "rising" before the "shine" at 3am to catch the light with my Palm beach Photographic Centre's workshop with the Buffalo Bill Center in Cody Wyoming. This the "grand Canyon" of Yellowstone shot at the beginning of Sunset. One day after the longest day of the year. Sleep happened very very late.

Image wast taken with a D610 with a 24-120mm Nano coated VR lens recorded to a 128GB Lexar flash card used post processing with Capture NX 2 then Photoshop CC and Nik Colorefex 4.0, Induro C414 carbon fiber tripod and BH3 ball head.

From my most favorite Gig I have ever had was this trip to India.

I had just landed in Mumbai, Hawaii (two week gig), to LA, LA to Frankfurt, Frankfurt to Mumbai. You know the direct route. Get picked up after several hours in customs hell explain why I have so much camera gear. Get out a little ride hard put a way wet. BAM car races straight from the airport and BAM i am in the middle of the Genish festival.

I have a very large folder of "TO_DO" images spanning all the years I have been shooting.

I shot this whilst walking to dinner. ALWAYS carry a camera. Nothing worse than shooting a Cyberchrome. For me the most important aspect of any image is first the gesture of the image in conjunction with the timelessness of the image. Spontaneous moments that conspire in an instant to create moments you will alway remember events they are nothing more than an instant. Those are the ones that move me the most.

Coolpix 950 image. Campaign Code name "Stunning Lust". Lit with a Westcott sunlight reflector through the window of an antique store called the "Rosetta Stone Gallery" it took the camera 3 seconds from hitting the shutter at full resolution 1.92MP TIF to fire and a minute 47 seconds to write to the card in 1999. Ahhhh... the salad days of digital. Oh yeah I had to walk up hill in the snow in both directions to go to my studio which was just a wet paper bag open at both ends AND I was grateful....

This image was taken on day one of the "rising" before the "shine" at 3am to catch the light with my Palm beach Photographic Centre's workshop with the Buffalo Bill Center in Cody Wyoming.... This is the image before the previous "rainbow" shot. The Rainbow was to my back. The thing to remember always look both ways. This image was shot on June 21st, the longest day of the year and that far north Sunrise comes really early.

Image wast taken with a D610 with a 24-120mm Nano coated VR lens recorded to a 128GB Lexar flash card used post processing with Capture NX 2 then Photoshop CC and Nik Colorefex 4.0, Induro C414 carbon fiber tripod and BH3 ball head

Final file is stored and scaled using Perfect Resize (AKA Genuine Fractals.)

This is another image from my most recent trip to PBPW Cuba. The image you are seeing are part of a greater project, a book series titled "Turning the Last Page." The title of the Cuba project is "Cuba: Turning the Last Page of 1962."

The camera was the fabulous Nikon D810. The lens was 105mm f 1.4. Arguably the best lens Nikon has ever made. Certainly the best lens I have ever shot with.

To make sure we are all on the same page, there are always two aspects to every shoot. "The Shoot" itself and the post processing to final art. This image contains both aspects and is the outcome of the post processing this is a copy of that final file.

For "the shoot" aspect of this project no artificial light, no make-up on the subjects by a make-up stylist, in this case just the make-up the dancer chose to put on herself, no reflectors or diffusers all of the images are spontaneous none of the subjects are posed. So what you are seeing is (from the shoot aspect) just the lens. Just the camera. Just the light that was there. Just the subject.

My goal every time I shoot is to be the weakest link in the entire project.

This is an image of the Cuban Ballerina Klavdia. In this image, just like the previous one of the Elena , Klavdia was resting in a small window frame and I was out side on the even smaller balcony shooting towards her, in between rain showers.

The light source was ambient rainy daylight.

When asked what is the best light W. Eugene Smith said "Why the best light is available light and by available light I mean any damn light that is available."..... This approach to lighting Works for me.

I have always held that the lens is the brush, the camera sensor is the canvas. I have also held the that the beauty of a lens is not in how well it handles focus but rather how well it handles from in focus to blur.

There is no image I cannot capture. There is no image in which my vision of the image and the beauty of moment that took me that is not enhanced by the beauty of the glass and lens design of the Nikon system.

This has to be the sharpest lens I have ever used. It is also has the most beautiful Bokeh of any lens I have ever shot with as well.

So you want to know why I choose Nikon? Now you know.

Because of my Nikon camera- I AM: A Super Hero. Because of the Nikkor lenses I AM: A Super Hero with tack sharpnes at point of focus and beautiful Bokeh every place else in the image.

NOTE: I do indeed use Photoshop. It's true. Have been since version 1. when it fit on a single floppy disc. Most inspired piece of software ever written. I was employee number 2 of Niksoftware ( Colorefex, SilverEfex) and employee number 6 of Altamira Group (the inventor of Genuine Fractals) so yes I do also use plug-ins. So if you are viewing an image (unless otherwise noted) on my personal pages, website and sundry feeds they are all post processed if I put them up.

To be very crystal clear ALL of my images that I post on my personal web feeds are post processed.

So that this non issue is no issue these are my "FINAL" versions on my PERSONAL sites. Because it is my personal page I do reserve the right to delete comments from angry photographic charlatan internet trolls.

I always make it a point, If you read the full description of any of my images, to always list the software and hardware used to produce an image.

Final file is stored and scaled using Genuine Fractals.

When you are stuck in airports because of weather delays you can either bemoan your fate or you can post process pictures...

Iso here is more of my "Street walking" photography, seeing the world at eye level and at the speed of life.

IIt this case I am photographing a procession of "mini" monks or there morning walk for food from the residence of the village. Buddhist monks are not allowed to handle money and have to be given the gift of food to eat. A monk has three robes. The one he has on, the one he wore yesterday and the one he will tomorrow he washes the other two. In Thailand the monks wear robes dyed with saffron. In Burma the robes are dyed with Jackfruit.

This image is from a trip to Cuba I took in December of 2016.

I am working on images for my solo show of my images of Cuba that will happen sometime end of this year beginning of next at the Museo National Bellas Artes in Havana Cuba (the National Museum of Fine Art) I have been going through all of the 500,000 give or take frames I have shot so far.

The concept behind this project is to photograph the echos of the past that are still present today. What makes Cuba unique, almost wholly unique, is the it is caught in a bubble of 1962. I have several ongoing projects to capture the echo of Myanmar, India, Paris and New York City. Of all of these projects Cuba and Myanmar are the most complete.

Light, gesture and color are the three key elements of any image, with gesture being the most important consideration. In addition to these three ememnts there is a fourth concept- time, specifically timelessness. A successful image is one where gesture is served but the “when” is not definable.

I shot this with the D500 NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G lens. 20 plus year project is 1/400 of a second ISO 100. Image raw processed in NX Studio and Photoshop CC with the NiK collection.
