I was riding the Last Run of the PAs - a Richmond (CA) to
Stockton and return event organized by the Pacific Locomotive Association in March of 1968. I approached the conductor as he was about to board the engine after dropping us off for the second photo run by of the day, and asked, or pleaded, to ride the cab on this run-by. He thought about it for a moment, maybe it was my youthful enthusiasm that was working here, but he allowed me to climb up into the cab with him. This is what we all look like from the cab!

"Jeg sender inn et lite iPhone-bilde av vår bokhylle. Vi (min mann og
meg) har en leilighet på 67 kvadrat og plassen utfordret tanken om hvor vi kunne få plassert alle bøker (samt film og musikk). Bøkene er sortert etter sjanger, hvor jeg har en utvalgt hylle med en blanding: Sjanger i denne hyllen blir "Kjerstin". Forfattere som vi har mange bøker av har egen liten hyllen, eks. Murakami. Videre er inndelingen enkel, slik vi ser det ... krim, skjønnlitteratur, poesi, filosofi, religion, dokumentar, reise og videre. (Film er delt inn på samme måte etter Nordiske, Europeiske, Asiatiske og videre - hvor videre inndeling er anime og videre). Det finnes ingen pyntegjenstander i hyllen som ikke kan knyttes til noe; ingen gjenstand kjøpt kun med tanke for at tingen i seg selv var fin. Alt har slik sett en liten historie å fortelle. Vi ønsket oss en bibliotek og fikk på en måte dette, kombinert med spisestue og kjøkken i åpen løsning. En kombinasjon som passer utmerket for oss og for plassen rent fysisk.
Favorittbøkene står etter humør og hva som fordrer øyeblikket. Bøkene står med andre ord på sin plass, i en strukturert (slik vi ser det..) og fast rytme. Det er våre rytmer som er variable og som nyttegjør seg et system som er stabilt.
Bokhyllen i seg selv som fysisk byggverk er ung, den ble bygget i 2009 av en av mine svigefedre. Vi har en forholdsvis liten leilighet og mange bøker (filmer og skiver) som vi ønsket å ha fremmme, lett tilgjengelig, tilstede. Det ble derfor bygget fra gulv til tak på begge sider av spisestuden - forlengelse av kjøkkenet. Alle mål og størrelser på hyllene er tilpasset bruken og hyller kan deles opp med hjelp av flyttbare elementer. Livshistorien er samtidig lang og finnes i bokhyllen i form av bøker i alle aldre, ting i alle aldre (telefoner, skrivemaskin og videre - hvor alle har sin historie knyttet til vår familie). Den er jo også bygget av pensjonert svigerfar, malt med omhu og med omsorgsfull tid. Vi syntes at helheten av bokhyllen er veldig oss. Den rommer mye, er raus, den er full av historie, vår historie, håndverk bygget av familie. Lite livsverk!"

I 2008 oppnådde festivalen rekordhøy sorteringsgrad på 67 prosent av avfallet, på grunn av Natur og Ungdoms innsats.

Before Jean-François Millet achieved international success as a painter of peasant life, he earned his early living as a portraitist. Here, he depicted Louise-Antoinette Feuardent, the wife of his lifelong friend Félix-Bienaimé Feuardent, a clerk in the library at Cherbourg. In this portrait painted shortly after her marriage, Louise-Antoinette prominently displays her wedding band on her left hand. In a style reminiscent of seventeenth-century Dutch painters, Millet painted the modestly dressed sitter against a plain background using a limited palette. Louise-Antoinette looks out of the picture, her brown eyes calmly assessing the viewer. Through a tightly controlled composition and a careful balance of monochromatic tones, Millet captured Louise-Antoinette's self-containment, reserve, and poised composure.
