With the ruins of an Overland Trail stagecoach station in the foreground, an eastbound intermodal rolls through the Point of Rocks ghost town on Union Pacific's historic cross-country Overland Route, crossing the desolate Red Desert of southern Wyoming. Running cross-country from the Pacific Coast to Chicago, the crew of this eastbound is traversing a lonely 290-mile run from Green River to Cheyenne, the next crew change point for intermodal traffic.

The Overland Route is part of the first transcontinental railroad across North America, completed in May of 1869 when the Union Pacific and Central Pacific met at Promontory Point in present-day Utah. Over 150 years later, through numerous changes in technology and motive power, Union Pacific lettering still rolls by nonstop on a daily basis, hauling cross-country freight traffic between the Midwest and the Pacific Coast. Today's Overland Route sees a variety of traffic, including high priority intermodal, international container traffic, general freight, and various bulk commodities.

Located east of Rock Springs off of Interstate-80, this historic stagecoach station and horse stables were built in 1862, six years before the transcontinental railroad came through. The structures are located on what was the Overland Trail, an early stagecoach and wagon trail between Atchison, Kansas and Fort Bridger, Wyoming across the western frontier. During it's time serving as a station point, the structures saw an attack from Native Americans, a large-scale stagecoach robbery from the notorious outlaw Jack Slade, and the arrival of the first transcontinental railroad. Today, the stagecoach station is fully intact, but the stables are in ruins after 160 years of harsh weather on the Red Desert.
