This is one of the most unique AND creepy windows I have ever seen. It is in the Capela dos Ossos, in Evora, Portugal. The Chapel was built as an extension to the Convent of Sao Francisco in the first half of the 17th Century. The Chapel is an invitation to reflect on the transitory nature of the human condition. An inscription over the entrance to the Chapel translated to English reads, "We bones here, for yours await."

Happy(?) Window Wednesday!

well, at least one.

"The local name for the building is Casa dels ossos (House of Bones), as it has a visceral, skeletal organic quality. It is located on the Passeig de Gràcia in the Eixample district, and forms part of a row of houses known as the Illa de la Discòrdia (or Mansana de la Discòrdia, the "Block of Discord"), which consists of four buildings by noted Modernista architects of Barcelona.

[...]

It seems that the goal of the designer was to avoid straight lines completely. Much of the façade is decorated with a mosaic made of broken ceramic tiles (trencadís) that starts in shades of golden orange moving into greenish blues. The roof is arched and was likened to the back of a dragon or dinosaur. A common theory about the building is that the rounded feature to the left of centre, terminating at the top in a turret and cross, represents the lance of Saint George (patron saint of Catalonia, Gaudí's home), which has been plunged into the back of the dragon." (Wikipedia)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Das im Jahr 1877 errichtete Gebäude wurde für den Textilindustriellen Josep Batlló i Casanovas in den Jahren 1904 bis 1906 im Stile des Modernisme von Grund auf umgebaut. Gaudí arbeitete dabei mit Josep Maria Jujol und Joan Rubió i Bellver zusammen. Darüber hinaus waren an der Ausgestaltung die Bildhauer Joan Beltran, Josep Llimona, Carles Maní i Roig, Joan Matamala i Flotats und Llorenç Matamala i Pinyol beteiligt. Die Keramiken, die Gaudí hier wie bei vielen anderen seiner Bauten sehr stark gestalterisch einsetzte, stammen von Sebastià Ribó.
Die farbenreiche Fassade gibt die Legende des Heiligen Georg wieder, des Schutzpatrons Kataloniens (hier Sant Jordi genannt): Das Dach stellt die Schuppen des Drachens dar, gegen den der Heilige Georg kämpft, das Kreuz auf dem Dach ist seine Lanze. Die schmiedeeisernen Balkone stehen für Totenköpfe und die Galerie im ersten Stock für das Maul des Drachens.
Casa Batlló steht seit 1962 unter Denkmalschutz und wurde 2005 zusammen mit anderen Werken Gaudís in die Liste des UNESCO-Weltkulturerbes aufgenommen. "
Al petit poblet de Castellnou d'Ossó, al est d'Agramunt, es troba el castell que li dona nom, però que també és conegut com Castell Lliuró. És una construcció realment misteriosa i curiosament encara molt desconeguda fora del ambit la recerca històrica. De castell en té certament la seva identitat medieval, ja que la part superior de l'estructura és una torre medieval típica del s. XI construida pels senyors feudals catalans del moment. Però el gran interès és la estructura inferior, un gegantí mur circular de grans blocs de pedra (24 m. de diametre!) i aparentment massis per dintre. Es considera així de forma genèrica d'origen romà, tot i que també he sentit que podria ser iberic o islamic. El més curiós es que no s'ha excavat mai, però que per fi hi ha un projecte per a fer-ho i alhora acondicionar-lo per la visita. Certament es mereix molta més atenció de la que fins ara ha tingut. Quins misteris revelarà???
=============================================
In the small Catalan village of Castellnou d'Ossó a huge structure still hides it's real identity. Not by being small, in fact it's huge cyclopic walls have a diameter of 24 meters. It's generally accepted that it's of Roman construction, albeit an Iberian or Islamic builder can't be ruled out. Anyway, the huge circular structure is topped by a medieval tower, this clearly from the XI Century and having no mystery at all. Although the village and castle are known oficially as Castellnou (new castle), it has another name, Castell Lliuró, maybe translated roughly as 'free castle'. It has never been excavated, but now there's a project to do it soon.
Die Capella dos Ossos
Evora, Portugal
(Knochenkapelle) ist eine faszinierende Kapelle mit einem eher makabren Geheimnis. Während sie zu Evora’s beliebtesten Sehenswürdigkeiten gehört, ist diese unheimliche Touristenattraktion nichts für Besucher mit schwachen Nerven. Diese kleine bescheidene Kapelle ist die letzte Ruhestätte für Hunderte von exhumierten Körpern von den Friedhöfen der Stadt im 16. Jahrhundert.
The Capella dos Ossos
Evora, Portugal
(bone chapel) is a fascinating chapel with a rather macabre secret. While it belongs to Evora's most popular sights, this eerie tourist attraction is not for visitors with weak nerves. This small modest chapel is the last retreat for hundreds of exhumed bodies from the cemeteries of the city in the 16th century.
A peculiar church on a section of Monte Livata.
The Capela dos Ossos in Évora is one of the most popular, and macabre, monuments in Portugal.
Bone chapels and ossuaries are pretty common in Europe and have existed for centuries. In the past, cemeteries were much smaller and it was common practice to exhume remains years after burial so that others could be buried in the same place.
Gradually, placing bones and skulls on display became common. The message was clear: life does not end on Earth but continues, as explained in the Bible.
The Capela dos Ossos is located in the Church of São Francisco. It was built in the 17th century at the initiative of three Franciscan monks. More than five thousand bones and skulls adorn the walls, ceiling and columns of this chapel, all sourced from the city's cemeteries. (www.visitalentejo.pt)
Capela dos Ossos - A Capela dos Ossos é um dos mais conhecidos monumentos de Évora, em Portugal. Está situada na Igreja de São Francisco. Foi construída no século XVII por iniciativa de três monges que, dentro do espírito da altura, pretendeu transmitir a mensagem da transitoridade da vida, tal como se depreende do célebre aviso à entrada: “Nós ossos que aqui estamos pelos vossos esperamos”. A capela, construída no local do primitivo dormitório fradesco é formada por 3 naves de 18,70m de comprimento e 11m de largura, entrando a luz por três pequenas frestas do lado esquerdo. As suas paredes e os oito pilares estão “decorados” com ossos e caveiras ligados por cimento pardo. As abóbadas são de tijolo rebocado a branco, pintadas com motivos alegóricos à morte. É um monumento de uma arquitectura penitencial de arcarias ornamentadas com filas de caveiras, cornijas e naves brancas. Foi calculado à volta de 5000, provenientes dos cemitérios, situados em igrejas e conventos da cidade. A capela era dedicada ao Senhor dos Passos, imagem conhecida na cidade como Senhor Jesus da Casa dos Ossos, que impressiona pela expressividade com que representa o sofrimento de Cristo, na sua caminhada com a cruz até ao calvário.
Chapel of Bones - “Évora is the finest example of a city of the golden age of Portugal after the destruction of Lisbon by the earthquake of 1755'' Inscription criteria on the List of the UNESCO World Heritage (1985) and one of the most macabre sites to visit in Évora is the S. Francisco Church which contains the Chapel of Bones, a chapel which is totally covered with human bones. The cheery message above the chapel reads: “We bones in here wait for yours to join us”; Inside the macabre chapel, bones line the walls as five thousand skulls stare blankly at you from walls and arches. This ghoulish foolishness was the work of three monks who thought it would be easier to meditate on the transitory nature of material things in the undeniable presence of death. The bones of the monks responsible for the interior decorating are in a small white coffin inside the chapel. The Chapel of Bones “Capela dos Ossos” is decoratively lined with the skulls, femurs and tibias of thousands of the dead who's remains were ransacked by monks and nuns for the purpose of creating a fearsome monument to religious and soulful purification and mortality. In one corner, the mummified remains of a man and his infant son were supposedly hang from the boned wall as a reminder of fidelity.
I took this photograph of Antoni Gaudi's Casa Batlló in the afternoon of March 10, 2017. Gaudi had been fascinated from a young age by structures and mechanics of nature, and his designs often borrowed forms from nature (biomimicry). Here in Barcelona's Casa Batlló, the columns at the bottom of the building's front resemble bones. Accordingly, one of the building's humorous nicknames is "House of Bones" (Casa dels Ossos).
