Working on a technique to get continuous tone from Arista Ortho Litho film from Freestyle.
Exposed at 3 ASA with white light pre-flashing. Film processed in D-23 1:2 for 4 minutes.
So far, it looks promising.

Yesterday I spent some time farting around with some 8x10 Arista Ortho Litho film, trying to get "continuous tone" from it by various means.
This sheet of film was pre-exposed to white light with my enlarger (1 second at f22) to prime the film for exposure (reduces contrast, bumps shadows up a notch), and exposed in camera at 3 ASA. It was then developed in Divided D-23: 90 seconds in Part A, and 2 minutes in Part B. To some degree, this treatment resulted in a more or less continuous tone negative, but its still VERY contrasty. I can see where this might have an application for alt processes, like Salt.

This is an old portrait from 2014 of Juliet made on Kodak ortho X-ray film cut down to 3x4 for use in my Graflex RB Series B SLR camera, fitted with a 150mm f/4.5 Zeiss Tessar lens. I ran across it while looking at photos made with that camera in anticipation of receipt of a newly acquired 4x5 version of the same camera fitted with a 190mm f/4.5 Kodak Anastigmat lens. I'm reserving judgment on the Kodak lens until I can test it, but examples I've seen by others are very encouraging. Worst case scenario, I decide to swap the Kodak lens for a Tessar, or maybe even a Heliar, though the closest match in focal length I can find is 210mm, which is not a serious problem. Having the same camera in 4x5 will make it much easier for me to use a wide range of films available in that format. Although I have to say, I love the way this film works in combination with this vintage camera/lens and Juliet's timeless features.
Did I mention my "new" 4x5 is actually 2 "new" 4x5s and both shutter curtains are broken? I'll need to repair the shutter curtain, which I've never done, before I can actually use it. I want to bring it with me when I return to Israel in July, but that's probably wishful thinking.

I'm always considering alternatives to the "brand name" films I use, now that things have gotten SO expensive. Ilford's FP4+ 8x10 in 25 sheet boxes is now over $200, and though I am grateful to have cached a few boxes before it reached the $200 point, I need to consider what I can afford in the years to come.
With that in mind, I pulled out a package of Arista Ortho Litho film I had in the darkroom and made a test: I gave it a second of white light exposure (under the enlarger) and then exposed the film rating it at 3ASA to make this image. The film was developed (by inspection) in Pyrocat HD for four minutes, and this was the result. It wasn't too difficult to get "continuous tone" from this ridiculously cheap film, with a little extra effort. Who knows - it might be able to coax it into making a decent negative suitable for salt printing.

Overexposed by a stop or 2 I think, but I kind of like the misty grey, lacking tones giving it a vintage effect perhaps.
