Open code for open science?
Steve M. Easterbrook
Nature Geoscience 7, 779–781 (2014)
Published online 30 October 2014
Open source software is often seen as a path to reproducibility in computational science. In practice there are many obstacles, even when the code is freely available, but open source policies should at least lead to better quality code....

Candid portrait of a fakir - a sufi ascetic at the mela ground
Poush Mela 2011, Santiniketan
Images of Bengal, India
Fakirs of Bengal
Ever since Islam came to Bengal in the 13th century it participated, via a merging of Sufi inputs with vernacular strands of Vaisnavism (Vishnuism), tantrism and local folk cults, in a very rich blend of religious beliefs and practices in the lower strata of the society. The Fakir (Sufi ascetic), as a sub-section of the Bengali Bául with a more or less defined Muslim identity, are at present the largest group in Bengal perpetuating this form of 'Islamic syncretistic tradition'.
Lalan Shah or Lalan Fakir (?1774-?1890) is a product and proponent of purely Bengali syncretism. His writings and his teachings tell a story of merging Hinduism and Islam into a universalistic religion transcending the boundaries of any single religion.
The Hindu Bául and the Muslim Fakir share the same tenets of an mystic quest based on the intimate human-divine connection within every human being, cultivated through a philosophy and practices that emphasize the human body as locus and means for finding the essence of God. The path is taught in the traditional guru-disciple relationship where the guru is like the figure of the Sufi saint, in whom the divine is accomplished, merged with the human. The spacious and well equipped studio has facilities for artists to produce prints in many media, including etchings, relief prints, solar plates and screen prints.
****SPRING COURSES 2010****
LINO AND RELIEF - Type and Sound Sat 6 Feb
Team member Kirstie Larsen introduces a new one-day course at The Badger Press. Inspired by type and sound, exploring poetry and onomatopoeia, users will create small, intimate postcard prints. Kirstie graduated in 2007 as an illustrator and teacher, has a strong background in gallery education and in teaching in further education. Her specialist areas include visual communication in print and in typography and letterform. Be sure to expect some interesting work as the weekend explores experimental techniques with new ways to stimulate your creativity.
Fee: £55Tutor: Kirstie Larsen
SCREEN PRINTING WEEKENDWeekend 13 & 14 Feb
These two-day workshops will cover a wide range of water-based screen-printing processes. Photographic stencil emulsions will be utilised to make screens from photographic, digital or hand-drawn sources. Additionally, methods of working directly on the screen mesh will be used, such as cut or torn paper stencils, liquid filler stencils and drawing fluid processes. These direct processes and water-based materials enable the safe use of screen-printing within smaller, non-specialist studios or the home. Stephan graduated from Middlesex and lectures in Visual Arts at Fareham College and has a background in graphic design for print and motion and explores digital work for broadcast and exhibition.
Fee: £80Tutor: Stephan Caspar
PICTURE FRAMING AND MOUNTING Wed 17 & Thu 18 Feb
We're very pleased to introduce Lindy Bannister, (who comes highly recommended) to teach picture framing and mounting at The Badger Press. Lindy has been running her own picture framing company for 12 years. Students should bring with them prints and artwork ready to frame. Lindy will help you work with all aspects of framing and mounting, from paintings, photographs, embroidery and drawings. Students will get insider tips and tricks for presenting your work and should enable them to mount and frame at home or at the studio.
Fee: £55Tutor: Lindy Bannister
HYDRO-PLATE PROCESSWeekend 27 & 28 Feb
The Badger Press welcomes Nick Mobbs (MA) to teach a weekend course in Hydro-plate process. Hydro-plate is a Photopolymer etching process, and many Badger Press users may already know it as the Solarplate method. This is a relatively new process to fine art printmaking and enables etching or relief plates to be made simply by exposure to ultra-violet light, and developed in water without the use of acids or hazardous chemicals. It is possible to produce highly detailed and sensitive images from hand-drawn, photographic or digital sources.
Fee: £110Tutor: Nick Mobbs
ARTISTS BOOKMAKING WEEKENDWeekend 13 & 14 Mar
Ciara Healy (http://www.ciarahealy.com) is returning to Badger Press to run another 2-day bookmaking course introducing a number of different creative bookmaking techniques and approaches. The book types will include an Accordion Book, a Tunnel Book, a Flutter Book, Japanese Stab Binding and a Case Bound Note Book. Participants will be able to use these book forms to adapt them to suit own creative projects, be it to integrate and present prints, make a tailor-made sketchbook or journal, use it for telling a story etc. The Workshop is suitable for both beginners and more experienced. Some materials will be provided. This course proved very popular last term and over- subscribed, so book early to avoid disappointment.
Fee: £110Tutor: Ciara Healy
ETCHING AND STILL LIFEWeekend 27 & 28 Mar 2010
Working with line and tone - explore the process of etching through drawing from still life. Etching lends itself to the use of strong line and tone and by drawing, on-site in the studio; you will be able to respond more readily to the process. You will also be able to work directly on the etching plate from the still-life as well as from your drawings and for those who are interested, move into exploration of mark-making on steel plate. Bring paper, sketchbook and drawing materials and plenty of energy! Suitable for all levels of experience.
Fee: £110Tutor: Demeter Dykes
SCREENPRINTING - Portraits and FiguresWeekend 24 & 25 Apr 2010
Kirstie's second workshop explores figurative form and portraiture using a variety of stencil methods and combining photo-sensitive emulsion with hand-drawn techniques. Students will be asked to bring photographic images with them as a source of inspiration for their work, which will be printed using water-based inks. Further details will be sent to students to help them prepare for the weekend.
Fee: £80Tutor: Kirstie Larsen
ACCESS DAYS
Access days will continue on Thursdays with Nicola, Marcia, Jo and Angela who have kindly offered to invite one or two places to artists who wish to come and work in the studio, but feel they'd like to have someone around to ask for advice and check with. These are not formal teaching sessions, but days when groups are working in the studio. The new team will be working regularly on Fridays, and again will offer the same facility for artists in need of guidance. Rate: £25 per day
STUDIO HIRE
Studio Hire rates will remain fixed at the current rate, and these are for experienced users, who have the confidence to work alone or with others and use the facilities as the wish. Normally users will pay at the end of a session and use a new checklist to keep track of consumables they may have used during the day. A note to remember is that an individual sharing studio hire with three others can save on a single-person's full day rate, so if you'd like to find a group to join, then we can put you in touch with others in a similar position. Studio Hire rates can be found on our website, please email us or call to make a booking.
