My oldest possession, not sure of exact age although there is a printed date of 1798. A gift to my great, great grandfather in 1846, sadly both covers have become detached. See my first comment below for the records written inside.
The Glatt Water Castle is located in the village of Glatt, a district of Sulz am Neckar in the valley of the Glatt, district Rottweil, Baden-Württemberg.
It is one of the oldest Renaissance castles in southern Germany and one of the few preserved water castles in the state of Baden-Württemberg. The castle has been municipal property since 1971 and was extensively renovated from 1973 to 1989.
The Krall Barn is believed to be the oldest existing log barn in Lebanon County. The effort to save it first kicked off in 2007, when the structure, then located east of Schaefferstown, was saved from destruction by a cooperating owner, Howard Scharff, who worked with Schaefferstown’s Bill Ross by offering to donate the barn if it was dismantled. The way it stands now, most of the exterior of the Krall Barn is nearly complete. But there are many smaller, inside projects yet to be tackled. The education center is expected to make it easier for visitors to enjoy their time at the 110 acre historic site that features three locks of the Union Canal, an engineering feat visited by none less than President George Washington himself during its construction.

Perhaps the oldest settlement in Brazil, since the exploratory expedition of Gaspar de Lemos and Américo Vespúcio arrived at the place on January 24, 1502, which left a Portuguese exile Cosme Fernandes, known as Bacharel de Cananéia, who became a powerful figure in the region, coming to own many slaves and not paying allegiance to the Portuguese crown. Years later, in 1531, Portugal sent another expedition, under the command of Martim Afonso de Sousa, who arrived in the community of Cananéia, this date being considered the foundation of the village.
This facade seems to be a remnant of the early 18th century, a house built with stone and clay and lime mortar and waterproofed with whale oil.
The Daintree Rainforest is a region on the northeast coast of Queensland, Australia, north of Mossman and Cairns. At around 1,200 square kilometres, the Daintree is a part of the largest continuous area of tropical rainforest on the Australian continent. The Daintree Rainforest is a part of the Wet Tropics of Queensland Rainforest, that spans across the Cairns Region. The Wet Tropics Rainforest (that the Daintree is a part of) is the oldest continually surviving tropical rainforest in the world. Along the coastline north of the Daintree River, tropical forest grows right down to the edge of the sea. In 2009 as part of the Q150 celebrations, the Daintree Rainforest was announced as one of the Q150 Icons of Queensland for its role as a 'Natural attraction'. The tropical rainforest ecosystem of the Daintree Rainforest is one of the most complex on Earth. Its plant diversity and structural complexity is unrivaled on the Australian continent and represents the origins of other Australian flora. Millions of years ago, the Australian continent was warm and humid and rainfall was plentiful. During this time rainforest thrived in places such as the Uluru (Ayers Rock) region. As Australia became more arid, fewer and fewer places rainforests were able to survive. In the Daintree region, however, the climate and topography were ideal, so the area became a last remaining refuge for the rainforest. Within this refuge, many species were able to live comfortably without reason to change. Their descendants that are still living today retained many of their ancestors' primitive characteristics, some dating back 110 million years. One species in particular, Idiospermum australiense, commonly known as the idiot fruit, is one of the rarest and most primitive of the flowering plants. Its discovery in 1970 was arguably Australia's most significant botanical find, greatly increasing scientists awareness of just how ancient these forests really are. From a total of 19 primitive flowering plant families on Earth, 12 families are represented in the Daintree region making the highest concentration of these plants worldwide. These ancient plant families may be helpful for discerning the origins of the flowering plants. 22299
This is the oldest British aircraft flying in the UK currently. It was a one-off built in 1912. Although it is substantially original, the engine is almost modern, the original having being replaced with a 1916 model.
This aircraft doesn't fly very fast - a cantering horse could probably keep up!
The oldest mention of Twickel is in 1347, when Herman van Twickelo bought the house Eysinck near Delden. This house later became Twickel Castle. The last owner has transferred Twickel to a foundation that still manages the property.

Some of the oldest buildings in Austin can be found in the Sixth Street Historic District, a.k.a. Old Sixth Street and Dirty 6th, that runs east from Lavaca St. (2 blocks west of Congress Ave.) to I-35. While the Sixth St. entertainment district extends well past Congress Ave. to the west, and I-35 to the east, it is the historic section known for its clubs, bars, live music, restaurants, and 19th century architecture that made Austin the "Live Music Capital of the World."
This beautiful circa 1875 building, now home of the Friends Bar, one of Sixth Streets live music venues, is located at 208 E. 6th St. The Sixth Street Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
The oldest building that has survived without changing its form is the "Pachołków Tower". It comes from the fifteenth century, when the city fortifications were strengthened by expanding the system of devices at the gates. It is built of brick, on a circular plan and has seven storeys.
In 1834, the prison, which used to be in the town hall, was moved to the tower. It was probably in this period that the name "Pachołków Tower" was created.

Poike, the oldest volcano:
The Poike volcano was the first piece of land that emerged from the sea and, together with subsequent volcanic eruptions, formed the present territory of Easter Island. Its somewhat remote and isolated location and its difficult access make Poike a little-visited place. However, this mysterious territory contains secret corners and ancient legends that invite to discover it calmly and to know better the past of the island.
Poike, the first volcano on the island:
The name of Poike, usually translated by “hill”, seems to come from the Rapanui expression “Po” (night); “ike” (break) which means “place where the night breaks” because it is the first place on the island that receives the first rays of the rising sun.
Indeed, the Poike is located at the eastern end of Easter Island, and is the oldest of the three main volcanoes on the island, next to the Rano Kau and the Ma’unga Terevaka, which originated their formation. It is estimated that this first eruptive center emerged from the sea about 3 million years ago creating the so-called Poike Peninsula, although its activity was maintained until about 300 thousand years ago. Originally this peninsula was an island but later it was joined to the main body of the island, by lava flows coming from the Terevaka and other nearby volcanic centers.
The Poike is now an inactive volcano with a fairly symmetrical cone shape. The main crater has a circular shape and by its resemblance to a halo of sun or moon was called Pua Katiki, although in another version its name would mean “hill that serves to monitor the cattle.” Unlike other craters, this is totally dry and measures around 150 meters in diameter and about 10 meters deep. Inside a small eucalyptus forest grows that crowns the summit like a leafy green plume visible from afar.
From Pua Katiki, where the Poike reaches a maximum height of 460 meters, a wide plain of gentle slope is observed. which covers an area of about 4.5 km from east to west and 3.5 km from north to south. This large area, almost exclusively covered by a type of grass called here hoi (Sporobolus indicus), ends abruptly on 100-meter-high coastal cliffs formed by the continuous erosion of the sea on the Poike peninsula.
_______________________________________________
For some unknown reason, during the period of construction of the large statues, considered the golden age of the island, it is believed that the inhabitants of the Poike peninsula remained separate from the others and hardly participated in the work of carving in the quarries of Rano Raraku.
One proof of its isolation is that only two of the statues found in the Poike are made of the lapilli tuff of the Rano Raraku, while the rest of the statues were made of the white trachyte coming from the Poike deposits.

Fort Gratiot Lighthouse is the oldest surviving lighthouse in Michigan. It's an active lighthouse at the entrance to the St. Clair River from Lake Huron.
The original much smaller tower built in 1825 collapsed in 1828, and was replaced in 1829 by a taller tower, that was expanded in 1862 to its current 82-foot (25m) height.
The Alfama is the oldest neighborhood of Lisbon, spreading on the slope between the São Jorge Castle and the Tagus river. Its name comes from the Arabic al-ḥamma, meaning "hot fountains" or "baths," akin to "hammam". The district includes the freguesias (parishes) of São Miguel, Santo Estêvão, São Vicente de Fora and part of the two streets, "Freguesia da Sé: Rua do Barão" and "Rua São João da Praça". It contains many important historical attractions, as well as an abundance of Fado bars and restaurants.
The Rua do Barão is one of the streets of the Freguesia da Sé, which begins at the Rua São João da Praça (where once stood the Door of the Alfama) and ends at Rua Augusto Rosa (at the Cathedral's walls). The toponym "Rua do Barão" is because João Fernandes da Silveira, the first Baron of Alvito, minister of Portuguese kings Dom Afonso V and Dom João II, lived here.
During the times of Moorish rule, Alfama constituted the whole of the city, which later spread to the West (Baixa neighbourhood). Alfama became inhabited by the fishermen and the poor, and its condition as the neighbourhood of the poor continues to this day.
The 1755 Lisbon earthquake did not destroy the Alfama, which has remained a labyrinth of narrow streets and small squares. Lately the neighbourhood has been restored with the renovation of the old houses and new restaurants where Fado Portuguese typical is sometimes played.
Overlooking the Alfama is the medieval Castle of São Jorge, royal residence until the early 16th century with views of the city. In the slopes of Alfama there are other terraces (miradouros) from which to see the city, like the Miradouro de Santa Luzia, near the church of the same name and over remnants of the Moorish city walls, and the Miradouro das Portas do Sol (Gates of the Sun). Near Miradouro of Santa Luzia is located the Museum of Decorative Arts (Museu de Artes Decorativas), a 17th-century mansion.
From 2012, Alfama is part of the freguesia of Santa Maria Maior.
Among the churches of the Alfama are Lisbon Cathedral (12th–14th centuries), the oldest of the city and located to the West of the neighbourhood, the Convent of the Grace (Convento da Graça, 18th century), near the Castle, the mannerist Monastery of São Vicente de Fora (late 16th–18th century), where the Kings of the House of Braganza are buried, and the baroque Church of Santa Engrácia (17th century), now converted into a National Pantheon for important Portuguese personalities.
Edinburgh Castle is one of the oldest fortified places in Europe with a long rich history for the past 10 centuries as a royal residence, military garrison, prison and fortress. Located on the Castle Rock, it is an iconic symbol for Edinburgh and Scotland. It appears, in stylised form, on the coats of arms of the City of Edinburgh and the University of Edinburgh. Today, it is a major tourist attraction with over 1.5 million visitors. It still has a military role and holds a series of performances known as Edinburgh Military Tattoo that takes place on the Esplanade each year in August. It established the Time Gun in 1861 for ships in the harbour of Leith and the Firth of Forth. The One O’Clock Gun is fired every day, except on Sundays and holidays, from the Mill’s Mount Battery. There are many other things to see and do such as a visit to the National War Museum of Scotland, and many other features of the castle.

The oldest recorded House Wren was at least 9 years old, when it was recaptured and rereleased during banding operations in New York in 1993, the same state where it had been banded.
Taken last winter, right after a snow storm. It is one of Norways oldest and best preserved fishing villages.
The oldest part of the church is Anglo-Saxon, stone built in the 9th century, replacing an older wood and mud building. The nave was without aisles and two of its original windows are preserved in the Anglo-Saxon walling at the west end of the nave. These were unglazed and were closed in bad weather by wooden shutters wedged into a rebate cut into the outer edge of the window. High up in the north wall of the nave are three Anglo-Saxon circular windows, probably the upper storey. The ring of holes drilled round them held wattle rods used in the construction of the windows.
Aisles were first added in the 12th century. On each side of the nave two low arched openings pierced through the existing walls gave access to the aisles. These openings were swept away when the present arcade was put in in 1812, but the Norman angle-shafts to the responds can be seen in the wall at each end of the arcade. In the 15th century wider aisles were built, the Norman south doorway moved out to its present position and a porch was built. At the east end of each aisle is a squint giving a view of the altar. One of these is a very rare squint passage which, prior to the installation of choir pews, would have allowed access to the altar. In the North aisle the west wall contains a 13th century lancet window. The south wall of this aisle was at first the outside wall of the church and the rough area of plaster above the Anglo-Saxon window is the original exterior plaster of the Anglo-Saxon church. The wooden box chest is dated 1634. There are some medieval tiles (13th-14th century) on the floor near it and also a few in the south aisle.
The wooden balcony in the nave is the 15th century rood loft, one of the very few which have survived. When removed, probably early in the reign of Elizabeth I, it was carefully hidden behind a lath and plaster covering against the east wall of the nave, discovered there in 1812 and since repainted. The wooden screen below the loft is Victorian.
The tower is 15th century. On its floor stands the Norman font (early 12th century). The Font Figure has long been the subject of speculation and debate. However, recent research identifies the carving as being that of St Michael, on an original Saxon font, over-cut by Norman carvings and 16th century desecration. St Michael is also depicted on the font at Winterbourne Monkton, but the Avebury font carving is far earlier than that of Winterbourne Monkton and the saint is depicted as holding a crozier- not a symbol of Episcopal power but rather cosmic, supernatural power. The carvings show two serpents with twisted tails, their heads turned towards the figure of a bishop or Archangel Michael holding a crozier; popular pictures in the middle-ages showed Christ trampling on the dragons of evil and sin. It is also worth noting that the tree, carved in one piece, 12 pillars of wood/ tree trunks circling the font contains a wonderful array of birds.
We stopped off in Durham on our way to Newcastle sadly it was grey wet and cold. Durham is one of my favourite cathedrals and one of the oldest in England . It does lacks the delicacy of later Gothic churches looking more like a fortress but its a magnificent building . When I post a shot of the interior you will see the remarkable massive pillars that hold up the ceiling . This shot from the river is a lovely view though a brighter day would have been nice
Durham Cathedral is one measure of the swift and profound transformation brought about by the Norman Conquest in England in the eleventh and twelfth centuries: not only a new art and architectural style—what is variously referred to as Anglo-Norman or English Romanesque—but an unprecedented and almost military-industrial mode of construction.
The Cathedral was built between the late 11th and early 12th century to house the bodies of St. Cuthbert (634-687 AD) (the evangeliser of Northumbria) and the Venerable Bede (672/3-735 AD). It attests to the importance of the early Benedictine monastic community and is the largest and finest example of Norman architecture in England. The innovative audacity of its vaulting foreshadowed Gothic architecture. The Cathedral lies within the precinct of Durham Castle, first constructed in the late eleventh century under the orders of William the Conqueror.
The Castle was the stronghold and residence of the Prince-Bishops of Durham, who were given virtual autonomy in return for protecting the northern boundaries of England, and thus held both religious and secular power.
The Cathedral and Castle are located on a peninsula formed by a bend in the River Wear with steep river banks constituting a natural line of defence. These were essential both for the community of St. Cuthbert, who came to Durham in the tenth century in search of a safe base (having suffered periodic Viking raids over the course of several centuries), and for the Prince-Bishops of Durham, protectors of the turbulent English frontier.
In 1986 the cathedral and Durham Castle were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

W5856 is the oldest surviving airworthy Fairey Swordfish in the world. She first flew on Trafalgar Day (21 October) 1941 and was a “Blackfish”, built by Blackburn Aircraft at Sherburn-in-Elmet and delivered to 82 MU (Lichfield) on 20 October 1941 for overseas transport to Gibraltar. W5856 served with the Royal Navy’s Mediterranean Fleet for a year. Little is known of her role while on active Service in the Mediterranean but it is likely W5856 was based at North Front, Gibraltar, carrying out patrols over the Straits. She was then returned to Fairey’s Stockport factory for refurbishment during winter 1942/43.

This is the oldest, uninhabited part of Beverston Castle. In fact, I had to take this photo through the bars of an iron gate, so I couldn't get any closer to avoid the dark shadows ...
On Wikipedia, there is some information on Beverston Castle to be found, accompanied by a photo that is almost identical to mine! This is an extract:
"Beverston Castle, also known as Beverstone Castle or Tetbury Castle, was constructed as a medieval stone fortress in the village of Beverston, Gloucestershire, England. The property is a mix of manor house, various small buildings, extensive gardens and the medieval ruins of the fortified building. The castle was founded in 1229 by Maurice de Gaunt, and it saw action in the Civil War.
Much of the castle remained in a state of ruin according to a 2019 report, and had been uninhabitable since the 17th century. Several buildings on the 693-acre property, including five cottages and the 17th century house with seven bedrooms, were in use as residences, however."
This week's Macro Monday's post is for the "oldest object I can find" theme.
There's not much old in my house - I can't really find much older than I am. However, my daughter did have some fossils, I love the translucency in this ammonite.
Enjoy the Holiday Season with Friends #8532
As we approach the holiday season, take time to visit with a friend and share a meal. We are social creatures that thrive in the presence of others. Remember, to be thankful for what you have and treasure your friends both near and far.
Pictured above are two Galapagos Tortoises (Chelenoidis Nigra) enjoying a meal at Saint Augustine Alligator Farm. The Galapagos is the largest of all tortoises, which can reach lengths of five feet and weigh over 600 pounds! Characteristics include heavy limbs, long necks, and high domed dark colored (nigra) shells. As herbivores, they eat a wide variety of vegetation, including flowers, grasses, leaves, and even cactus.
The tortoises are endemic to the Galapagos Islands located in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, roughly 600 miles west of Ecuador. Status/ conservation lists them as ‘vulnerable’ while the biggest threats today comes from the introduction of non-native invasive species to the Islands, such as feral dogs, cats, and rats that prey upon young tortoises. Cattle and goats also compete with the larger tortoises for vegetation.
Galapagos tortoises are the longest living vertebrate, with an average life span of 100 years with the oldest living 152 years. This animal can go for nearly a year without food & water!
***Now, can you see the benefits of spending time with a dear friend or family members??? “May you enjoy your friends and family with the approaching Holiday Season!”

Architecture ...Italy Vilia
The original owners of Italianate homes would often have been third or fourth generation Canadians, probably descended from United Empire Loyalists. The Loyalists were refugees. They left the newly formed United States because they disagreed with fundamental policies of the new republic, one of them being slavery. Many of the Loyalists left beautiful properties, large homes and good lives with only the belongings they could fit on their backs or in a wagon. They would have been pleased to see their descendants living in comfort. In addition, they would have been happy to see that their descendants had maintained the same moral principles that forced their own migration.70
The oldest building at Queen’s, this graceful neoclassical villa was built as a private home for the local Anglican Archdeacon George Okill Stuart in 1839.
Okill Stuart's father, Rev John Stuart, had been granted the 200-acre plot of land in 1785 in recognition of his status as Chaplain of the King's Royal Regiment, Bishop Emissary of the Church of England, and one of Kingston's most important United Empire Loyalist leaders.
Summerhill was restored in 1984 and again in 2002 and is a designated Ontario historical site.
In 2010, the east wing was officially renamed Agnes Benidickson House in honour of the former Chancellor (see Agnes Benidickson).

Vyšehrad is the oldest seat of Czech princes; in fact, the local settlement was established in the mid-10 th century. Situated on a rocky promontory above the Vltava River, it offers stunning views of the city, and the park area holds hidden architectural treasures including the rare Romanesque Rotunda of St Martin, the neo-Gothic Church of Sts Peter and Paul, the national cemetery Slavín, and the underground casements housing the some of the original Baroque statues from the Charles Bridge.

Point Betsie Lighthouse is the oldest standing structure in Benzie County, built in 1858, marks the all-important entrance to southern end of the Manitou Passage, a once-vital maritime shipping channel. Although the lane is no longer used by large commercial vessels, the operating light signal remains a US Coast Guard aid to navigation to this day, and the site shines as a treasured landmark to mariners and landlubbers alike. ~Pure Michigan

This clock was given to me a long time ago by my mother. She said it came from her great-grandaunt who worked as a housekeeper in a wealthy bourgeois family. When she retired they offered her this clock as a reward for her devotion.
There used to be a glass globe to protect it but I broke it when trying to clean it, unfortunately. Which provoqued a very angry reaction on the part of my mother who said that generations of women had cleaned it without breaking it.
My mother has always been very good at reinforcing my self-confidence. :-)
